On this date in 1995, famed rapper and actor Tupac Amaru Shakur was sentenced to one and a half to four and a half years at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, NY on rape charges.
Shakur was convicted of first degree sexual abuse charges after a woman claimed that he and his entourage raped her during her second visit to his hotel room. She admitted that during her first visit, they had consensual sex. During his stint, ‘Pac married his longtime girlfriend Keisha Morris, but the couple divorced almost a year later.
After serving just nine months of his sentence, Shakur was released on $1.4 million bail from Clinton, which was put up by Death Row Records CEO Marion “Suge” Knight and in exchange, Shakur would put out three albums under the Death Row umbrella. Shakur was killed in Las Vegas in a drive-by shooting just one month short of his release from the New York prison.
