The coronavirus has people all over the world shook right now. Stores across the country are reporting being completely sold out of hand soap and hand sanitizer. Apparently some people have begun using Titos Vodka to make their own hand sanitizer.
Titos Vodka representatives have been responding to people on Twitter about using their product to make hand sanitizer. According to the company, the drink does not contain high enough levels of alcohol concentration to properly fight germs.
In a statement provided to The Dallas Morning News, a spokesperson for Titos stated that “As soon as we saw the incorrect articles and social posts, we wanted to set the record straight. While it would be good for business for our fans to use massive quantities of Tito’s for hand sanitizer, it would be a shame to waste the good stuff, especially if it doesn’t sanitize (which it doesn’t, per the CDC).”
The CDC states that hand sanitizer needs to contain at least 60% alcohol. However, Titos Vodka only contains 40% alcohol, below the CDC’s standard.
For those trying to make a hand sanitizer at home, just use Everclear instead.
