Showtime has announced the season two release date for their critically acclaimed drama The Chi. Lena Waithe, the show’s creator and executive producer alongside fellow executive producer Common, will officially make its long-awaited return on April 7, at 10 pm EST.
According to Showtime’s description, On Chicago’s south side, an average day finds kids prepping for school as their parents head off to work, young adults trying to make a living, and the elders keeping an eye on things from their front porches. But in this tough neighborhood, real dangers threaten daily to squelch dreams, and the simplest decisions can have life or death consequences. From Emmy winner Lena Waithe, The Chi is a timely coming-of-age drama series centered on a group of residents who become linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption.
The official Season 2 logline reads as follows:
“Produced entirely in its namesake city, Season 2 of The Chi will spotlight the ambitious plan by Brandon to make his food truck a success, while navigating the class differences with his girlfriend Jerrika. Emmett will encounter a lot of bumps and bruises as he makes an effort to grow up and get custody of his son, guided by his mother Jada, who is discovering a new life of her own. Kevin reckons with the trauma of what he has experienced in his young life, as he strengthens the bonds with his buddies, Papa and Jake, whose older brother Reg exposes Jake to twisted lessons in street survival. Lastly, an imprisoned Ronnie will attempt to come to terms with killing Brandon’s brother and reclaim his life, while Detective Cruz launches a new investigation. The season will also show the joys of living life on the Southside of Chicago.”
Deadline has reported that the first season of The Chi pulled a significant number of viewers in its debut season. On a weekly basis, the show recorded 4.5 million weekly viewers, which ultimately made it the highest-rated debut series on the network since Billions was released in 2016. Ayanna Floyd will be this season’s showrunner while also joining Waithe and Common as an executive producer.
Keeping a great cast together is essential to the success of any show and The Chi looks to have most of their performers from the first season coming back for round two. Those returning from the remarkable ensemble include Jason Mitchell, Jacob Latimore, Yolonda Ross, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, and Tiffany Boone.
