Legendary Radio Host Bob Slade Passes Away, Twitter Mourns But Celebrates The OG

2016 Circle Of Sisters

Ebro Darden from Hot 97 Radio, Bob Slade and Bishop Darren A. Ferguson attend the ‘2016 Circle of Sisters’ at Jacob Javits Center on October 15, 2016 in New York City.

New York City radio legend Bob Slade has passed away. The smooth-voiced host of WBLS’ “Open Line” reportedly died on Sunday (March 24) after a battle with kidney disease.

Reports the New York Daily News:

Though he excelled over the airwaves delivering news and commentary, Harlem native Slade’s original dream was to be an actor.

In fact, Slade studied acting at Queens College and was a member of the Negro Ensemble Company and the Harlem YMCA Theater Group.

He developed an interest in radio while performing in off-Broadway shows.

After stints doing news radio on Long Island, Slade moved to New York City’s 98.7 Kiss-FM station, where he became the news director.

There, he developed the venerable “Open Line” program, which he co-hosted with attorney Bob Pickett and musician James Mtume.

The show tackled a host of urban issues from police brutality to education and politics. It moved to WBLS when 98.7 changed its format in 2012.

This is tough news for many who grew up listening to Slade on KISS in NYC. Slade never saught the spotlight, he just did the work of keeping us as woke as possible.

Soon after news broke of his passing over the weekend, the tributes began pouring. Check out of some of the more poignant reactions from fans and peers below.

Rest in power Bob Slade.

New York Radio Giant, Bob Slade Loses Fight with Kidney Disease

Sundays will never be the same. Popular host and New York radio veteran, Bob Slade lost his fight with kidney disease, leaving fans and supporters heartbroken.

Most notable for his stint as a News Director at NYC’s popular adult contemporary station 98.7 Kiss FM, his take on news was culturally sensitive as well as hard hitting.

With a deep milk-chocolatey-voice, his commentary was perfect for his weekly show with Bob Pickett and James Mtume called Open Line. On the show, the team broke down the psychology and pathology of racism and social justice. Whether looking at in through the lens of education, police brutality, pop culture or politics, the trio (with Slade playing an intricate part in the content development of the show) are predecessors to the work of millennial media darlings like Shawn King and Deray, that use their voice to drive attention to discrimination towards people of color.

Today many are mourning.

“RIP, to my brother, friend, and partner, Bob Slade,” tweeted the Rev. Al Sharpton, whose own radio program airs on the same station . “For a quarter of a century we struggled together, you are irreplaceable. Thanks for everything.”

Today In Hip Hop History: Boogie Down Productions Dropped Their Debut LP ‘Criminal Minded’ 32 Years Ago

On this date in 1987, “Blastmaster” KRS-One, DJ Scott La Rock, “The Human 808” D-Nice and the rest of the Boogie Down Productions crew released their highly anticipated debut album Criminal Minded on B-Boy Records.

With the “South Bronx” vs. “The Bridge” aka BDP vs. The Juice Crew beef on wax was at its height, the Criminal Minded album proved to be one of the most important instructional projects for up and coming emcees on how to take out the top dog and start your own reign. As KRS mentioned in the QDIII Beef documentary, if MC Shan wouldn’t have responded to “The Bridge Is Over”, one of the premiere singles from the album, there probably would not have been the rise and success of KRS and BDP.

With Boogie Down Productions aligned with DJ Red Alert on the FM dial at 98.7 KISS and The Juice Crew siding with the one and only Mister Magic and Marley Marl on 107.5 WBLS, it also began the early radio wars, which is actually the origin of the HOT 97 and Power 105 battle on the dial.

Tracks that will forever be etched in Hip Hop history include intellectually adept “Poetry”, the street sagas in “My 9mm Goes Bang” and “P Is Still Free”, the late Scott La Rock inspired “Super Hoe” and the extensive lyrical lesson in the album’s title track. Ironically, Scott Sterling, better known as DJ Scott La Rock, was killed less than six months after the album’s successful release.

Following Scott’s death, KRS began dropping socially conscious singles and albums, prompting Hip Hop’s “Stop The Violence” movement and the iconic, star-studded “Self Destruction” single.

Nas Says JAY-Z Was Aware of R. Kelly’s Pedophilia in Unearthed 2002 Interview

Things are getting more and more interesting a week following the premiere of the Surviving R. Kelly docuseries. Many people who have collaborated with the disgraced singer in the past have joined the #MuteRKelly movement, meanwhile others assured that they been hopped on the wave decades ago when his pedophilia was made public knowledge.

JAY-Z was one of the people who opted to not participate in the documentary for whatever reason. According to an unearthed 2002 interview with Wendy Williams and Nas, Hov seen a “14-year-old girl come in the studio sit on R. Kelly’s lap” during the production of the Best of Both Worlds. Wendy agreed saying that anyone who has worked with him witnessed disgusting acts of sexual misconduct.

Dame Dash recently made headlines for claiming he was allegedly against his former artist collaborating with R. Kelly because of the nature of the relationship between his late fiance, Aaliyah, and Kells.

“I remember having the conversation with Aaliyah. And I was like ‘Yo, tell me what happened.’ And she was like ‘uh.’ She just couldn’t,” Dame said. “What you think I felt? I’m human, bro. I had to look the other way. All these years. Publicly, that man did a record with that n*gga that raped my girl, that he liked as well. But no one said nothing.”
