“The Return” of the Living Legends is Finally Here (Album Review)

The Living Legends are an alternative hip hop outfit from Los Angeles, California now consisting of Aesop, Bicasso, The Grouch & Eligh, Luckyiam, Scarub & Sunspot Jonz. Forming in ‘96 with Arata & most notably MURS, it wasn’t until the new millennium where they started dropping as a unit introducing themselves on Angelz Wit Dirty Faces & following it up with Almost Famous. They returned in ‘04 to discuss Creative Differences & their previous LP the following year Classic. But 15 years after their 2nd EP The Gathering, the Living Legends are making a comeback by unleashing their 5th full-length album.

After the “Jimi is a Star” intro, the first song “Letterman” featuring Reverie is a hardcore opener produced by Trox reminding y’all where the name comes from whereas “Front to Back” featuring Brother Ali & Opio takes a groovier approach instrumentally so everyone can get the party started properly. “Baggage” dives into boom bap turf thanks to Eligh talking about something weighing down your mind, but then “Monday Morning” gives off a mellow trap vibe looking to give thanks at the top of the week.

The title track featuring Del the Funky Homosapien returns to the boom bap courtesy of Statik Selektah getting in their hardcore bag just before “Tricky” hooks up this off-the-wall trap beat pointing out the fact they tried to warn us shit can be like that sometimes. “Distance” blends these hi-hats with a nocturnal loop talking about being on the road to nowhere leading into the soulful “Money 4 Nothin’” breaking down all the ways that people be chasing the paper this day in age.

“1 Kiss” shows off a bit of sensuality to the Living Legends with the help of former Zion I beatsmith Amp Live behind the boards while “Father’s Day” featuring Atmosphere weaves some pianos into the fold alongside kicks & snares from none other than Ant of course essentially likening hip hop to a father figure profoundly. “In God’s Hands” gives off a peppier flare to the beat expressing their gratitude while “If I Was a Car” featuring N8 the Gr8 is simply perfect for blasting in the midst of driving around Cali.

The song “We Gon’ Eat” featuring Pep Love grimily displays their hunger assuring that you’re never dead if you really got that love while the penultimate track “Gettin’ Up” featuring Jay Worthy pushes near the end of the group’s comeback effort by spaciously encouraging the listener to believe in themselves. “Break My Heart” ties up the album solemnly talking about how the waves crashed down.

Wasn’t sure if this day was ever going to come but after almost 2 decades, it finally did & The Return actually could be the best full-length that the west coast alt-rap crew have done in the 25+ years that they’ve been around as a unit. The production is a mix of old & new sounds, the guest performances are primarily consistent & the septuplet all sounds happy to be together again after so long.

Score: 8/10

J.Latley “Good Morning” Ft. The Grouch (Prod. By West Coast Trey)

Northern California emcee J.Lately has been on a relentless run of releases recently, and there’s no sign of him slowing down anytime soon. Here he teams up with the literal living legend and fellow CA spitter The Grouch for a calming yet bouncy single, ‘Good Morning. This is the second time that these two have collaborated together, the first being for Lately’s single ‘Clean’ in 2019, and the chemistry is clear. J.Lately and The Grouch sound nothing less than comfortable in their respective pockets, creating the perfect backdrop to start your day to. Produced by frequent collaborator West Coast Trey, ‘Good Morning’ is the third single off of J.Lately’s upcoming yet-to-be-announced album, due out later this year. Following closely behind his ‘Winnebago’ album, which dropped this March, it’s safe to say that J.Lately is right in the middle of a truly breakout year.

Murs, Grouch & Brady Watt Jam On The Street & Reward Anybody Who Supports (Video)

Living Legends co-founders Murs and The Grouch recently graced Heads with a collaborative effort titled Thees Handz, which is also the name this California duo are going by. Further, their lead single and video for the project was also entitled “Thees Handz.” Having given fans a few weeks to digest the 10-track EP, the twosome are back with a vid’ for the Brady Watt-assisted “Be Nice.” Over a bare-bones beat built around a robust Brady Watt bass-line, Murray and Corey’s raps encourage kindness to others and being grateful. The footage here features the three recording artists busking at Venice Beach. Further, the video is not staged and to make things interesting, they give $20 to anyone who donates $1. The reactions of the various passerby that contribute a buck or two, make this one of the most unique videos of the year. It’s part social experiment and part visual companion to a truly inspirational tune. Murs Details Making The Iliad Is Dead And The Odyssey Is Over With 9th Wonder (AFH TV Video) Murs’ verse is a great mix of optimism and humor, “You ever smile at a motherf*cker / And they don’t smile back and you like ‘motherf*cker’ / What’s wrong with you? / I took a deep breath and wrote this song for you / I know you going through your struggle / Scared to let anybody up inside your bubble / I buried a parent, I buried a kid / So, when I say this, I’m speaking from experience / Whatever it is, it’s never that serious / To have you walking ’round with your face all furious / You woke up today / And for a million motherf*ckers, it went the other way / Every day is a chance to be reborn / There’s still Taco Bell and there’s free p*rn / There’s always something you can smile about / But you lookin’ for a reason to start wildin’ out / I’m really sorry that you had a bad day / Lookin’ like somebody used your mouth as a ashtray / Cheer up Charlie, you Negative Nelly / I hope somebody paint a rainbow on your belly.” In a recent interview with AFH TV, Murs spoke about buying the candy of teens who make money, after an Instagram story showed the veteran MC purchasing all of the inventory from some Times Square hustlers. Murs & The Grouch Align As “Thees Handz”, Release Two New Singles “Thees Handz” & “Be Nice”

Murs & The Grouch align as a powerful duo Thees Handz and release two new singles “Thees Handz” & “Be Nice” featuring Brady Watt.  When hip-hop fans mention the Living Legends Crew – the 8 member collective from California that kicked open the doors for rap music that highlighted the everyday man – they often think of two members: Murs and The Grouch. While the two built a name for themselves within the crew, and as solo artists, they never collaborated on an official project with each other, until now.

The relationship between the two could be likened to college roommates who once shared living spaces together in their formative years, who went on to become successful in their own paths but remained rooted to their beginnings. After years of collaborating with other Living Legends crew members (The Grouch & Eligh, Three Melancholy Gypsies), and people outside of the crew (Atmosphere, Strange Music, Slightly Stoopid), the two decided to make a full project together – “Thees Handz“.

They have both had success in the live space as well; Murs was the first rapper to have his own festival, Paid Dues, and The Grouch with his annual tour, How The Grouch Stole Christmas. While ruminating on who to tour with for the 12th and final year of the Grouch’s Christmas Tour, a light bulb went off and The Grouch reached out to his brother, Murs. After discussing joining him on tour the two also decided to give their fans something they never knew they wanted – a joint album from Murs & The Grouch.

Clocking in at 10 tracks – a reference to the title, by way of the number of fingers on two hands – the project is effective in its succinctness. With tracks that run the gamut from braggadocious to introspective, Thees Handz will touch the listener one or another. The production is handled by The Grouch, Ant of Atmosphere, Eligh, DJ Fresh, DJ Rek, and Brady Watt. The album features Reverie, Rabbitt, Brady Watt, with scratches by DJ AbilitiesThees Handz will be available on 11-8-19 via Thees Handz/EMPIRE.

Murs and I didn’t always see eye to eye. During our time in the living legends, we butted heads when it came to creative and business decisions” Grouch commented.  “As time has gone on, our love for each other as brothers has grown. We recorded this album from a real place and I’m very proud of how far we’ve come. We built this shit from the ground up with our bare hands, so to speak, and the title track, “Thees Hands” embodies that. We included the “Be Nice” track because every motherfucker needs to be nice. Enjoy!”

Murs & The Grouch will also kick off the 12th and final, How The Grouch Stole Christmas Tour on November 12, 2019.
