Bring The Sandman: Apollo Theater Launches Virtual Amateur Night Auditions

As the world seeks out new ways to keep everyone entertained during the quarantine it seems providing unique digital experiences is the way to go. One performance venue is also jumping in on the fun.

Page Six is reporting that The Apollo Theater is also pivoting their approach to booking their world famous Amateur Night auditions. The property has closed its doors due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Naturally this prevents thousands of emerging performers from showcasing their talents but the executive board at the iconic Harlem music venue have decided to let contestants apply for a slot remotely.

According to their Instagram clips can now be submitted online. Interested parties can send a Youtube or Vimeo video up to five minutes in length along with their formal application. Amateur Night at the Apollo Auditions are open to singers, dancers, comedians, rappers, spoken word artists, musicians, and variety artists ages 5 and older. Those chosen from the audition will have the chance to perform and compete for the grand prize of up to $20,000.

HBO to Air Documentary Celebrating the Legacy of The Apollo Theater

The iconic Apollo Theater is the subject of an HBO documentary that will detail the unique history and contemporary legacy of the venue.

The documentary, titled The Apollo, is directed by Oscar and Emmy award winner Roger Ross Williams and will tell stories of the theater over the course of the last 85 years. The story will detail the building’s history as a refuge for marginalized artists to the legendary host for black excellence and iconic performances that it is known for today.

The documentary will bring archived clips of performances, behind-the-scenes footage of the team that makes sure the theater runs and brings in stars like Common, Jamie Foxx, Patti LaBelle, Savion Glover, Smokey Robinson and Pharrell Williams for insight into what makes the theater one of the most important venues in history.

The film will also bring you to the theater in present-day and highlight the work of the 2018 multi-media stage adaptation of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me, which hit the theater’s grand stage.

The Apollo will also highlight both the struggle of black lives in America and the essential part the theater plays in Black culture.

The Apollo is produced by Lisa Cortes, Jeanne Elfant Festa and Cassidy Hartmann and executive produced by Nigel Sinclair, Dan Cogan, Nicholas Ferrall, and Julie Goldman.

The Apollo will air on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 8 p.m. If you miss the airing be sure to check your local listings and HBO streaming applications.

HBO Doc ‘The Apollo’ Set To Kick Off The 2019 Tribeca Film Festival

The Apollo Theater in Harlem is a historic landmark to the culture and though much of today’s generation view it as just another building, they’re about to get a history lesson on how deep it’s meaning is and why it deserves respect.

To open the 18th Annual Tribeca Film Festival, HBO will be premiering it’s documentary film The Apollo which will be presented by AT&T. Directed by Emmy Award-winner Roger Ross Williams, The Apollo will take viewers back in time when the theater was viewed as thee stage to perform on by some of today’s biggest stars and icons.

“The Apollo is about so much more than just music, it’s about how we used music and art to lift ourselves out of oppression,“ commented director Roger Ross Williams.  “The story of the Apollo is the story of the evolution of black American identity and how it grew to become the defining cultural movement of our time.  I was fortunate to make my first film with HBO and I am thrilled to be coming back home with The Apollo. Premiering at The Tribeca Film Festival, at the Apollo Theater in Harlem is a dream come true.”

The feature-length documentary weaves together archival footage, music, comedy and dance performances, and behind-the-scenes verité with the team that makes the theater run. The Apollo features interviews with artists including Patti LaBelle, Pharrell Williams, Smokey Robinson, and Jamie Foxx. The documentary is produced by Lisa Cortés, Nigel Sinclair’s White Horse Pictures, and Williams
