Rihanna Reportedly Turned Down Super Bowl in Support of Colin Kaepernick

Rihanna is taking a knee with Kap.

The pop superstar has reportedly turned down an offer to headline next year’s Super Bowl LIII halftime show in support of Colin Kaepernick, reports Us Weekly.

“The NFL and CBS really wanted Rihanna to be next year’s performer in Atlanta,” says the insider. “They offered it to her, but she said no because of the kneeling controversy. She doesn’t agree with the NFL’s stance.”

Kaepernick was the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem to protest police brutality and systemic racism. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback has not played since the 2016 season as a result of the controversy. He has filed a grievance against the league, accusing them of colluding to keep him off the field.

After Rihanna declined, the NFL offered the show to Maroon 5. While no official announcement has been made, Adam Levine and his band will reportedly headline the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show. There are also rumors that Cardi B and Travis Scott will join them during the performance at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Feb. 3.

Rihanna is not the first artist to decline the Super Bowl. JAY-Z also reportedly turned down an offer to headline this year’s halftime show in Minnesota in support of Kaepernick.

“I said no to the Super Bowl / You need me, I don’t need you,” the Roc Nation mogul rapped on “APESHIT” off The Carters’ Everything Is Love album.

Many thought that Maroon 5 taking the stage would mean that Cardi B would join them for “Girls Like You,” the single just became the number one track on the Billboard Hot 100. However, Cardi B wants her own set during the biggest sporting event of the year.

TMZ reports Cardi is currently negotiating on her appearance for the Super Bowl but the only hold up is if Cardi B gets her own slot. Cardi is reportedly a hot commodity for the month of February and is looking out for the maximum exposure for herself.

Report: Cardi B in Talks for Solo Super Bowl Set

Cardi B is ready to invade the Super Bowl.

The “Bodak Yellow” rapper is reportedly in talks to be a special guest during Maroon 5’s Super Bowl LIII halftime show. But there are now reports that Cardi is looking for a bigger gig. According to TMZ, she is negotiating a solo set in addition to performing “Girls Like You,” her chart-topping collaboration with Maroon 5.

Cardi has reportedly been receiving multiple offers to perform around the Super Bowl in early February and is looking to make the best deal possible.

In addition to Cardi, Travis Scott is also on the rumored short list of guests for Maroon 5’s halftime set at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Feb. 3.

Meanwhile, Kulture’s mother has addressed rumors that celebrities including Rihanna unfollowed her on Instagram following her altercation with Nicki Minaj at New York Fashion Week. Taking to Instagram Stories, she shut down the reports.

“A lot of people were doing rumors that a couple of celebrities unfollowed me and that’s not even true,” she said. “Those celebrities weren’t even following me. Why can’t y’all just stop making rumors trying to make me look like I’m just over. When my time is over, you will see that my time is over.”

Cardi previously announced plans to release a new project this month that would feature songs that didn’t make her debut Invasion of Privacy, plus four or five new tracks. It’s unclear when she plans to debut the new music.

Cardi B, Travis Scott Rumored to Perform at 2019 Super Bowl Halftime

Many Hip Hop fans (and Waka Flocka Flame) were upset when news broke that Maroon 5 has been confirmed as the entertainers for the 2019 NFL Super Bowl Halftime Show in Atlanta this year. Luckily for the Hip Hop fans, Cardi B and Travis Scott are rumored to be on the short list of guests to perform with the band.

As per a Sept. 20 report from Billboard, official guest haven’t been confirmed, but Bardi and La Flame are two of the fans who are allegedly being considered. The NFL fueled the rumor in a comment made in a statement to the publication but left details under wraps.

“It’s a Super Bowl tradition to speculate about the performers for the Pepsi Halftime Show,” it reads. “We are continuing to work with Pepsi on our plans but do not have any announcements to make on what will be another epic show.”

Cardi B would make sense considering that she has a song with Maroon 5 which is presently No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Given her connections to Atlanta through her husband, Offset, many have speculated that should Cardi show up, she could bring out Migos also.

Travis Scott, as a Houston local, unquestionably has a down-south association. He’s additionally had a fruitful year since his ASTROWORLD album dropped.

Despite who gets decided for the guest appearances, Cardi and Travis in any event have another thing to bond over. Both respected their first child to the world this year.

Waka Flocka Drags NFL for not Selecting an Atlanta Artist for 2019 Super Bowl Halftime Show

Maroon 5 is set to perform at the 2019 Super Bowl Halftime Show, but every person is not feeling the NFL’s decision of entertainment. Considering the big game is happening in Atlanta, Waka Flocka thought it will be fit to have an Atlanta artist like Migos, Future, or himself to represent.

Talking with TMZ on Wednesday (Sept. 19), Waka said it wasn’t reasonable for the association to pick an artist that doesn’t hail from the Georgia city. “I think the Super Bowl, you should have somebody that’s from Atlanta, representing Atlanta… They need somebody from Atlanta, it’s only right,” he said. “It’s not fair, but this the NFL we talkin’ about—they’re not fair.”

Waka likewise pointed at the NFL’s issues with Colin Kaepernick and said the group could have made a greater effort to support him. “You’re coming to the biggest Black state in America,” the rapper continued. “Why wouldn’t you let a Black artist perform and show the world that we’re progressing? That’s not cool.”

While Migos and Future undoubtedly won’t be at the show, another report from Billboard suggests that Cardi B and Travis Scott could be joining Maroon 5 in Atlanta. Cardi has worked with the group for their hit single, “Girls Like You.”

Despite the fact that it’s only talk, a rep for the band declined to remark on the report, while the NFL expressed, “It’s a Super Bowl convention to conjecture about the entertainers for the Pepsi Halftime Show. We are proceeding to work with Pepsi on our plans yet don’t have any declarations to make on what will be another epic show.”

A year ago, Cardi shot down the idea of playing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, saying she wouldn’t perform until Kaepernick got a deal. “When they hire Colin Kaepernick back,” she said to TMZ.

Report: Cardi B, Travis Scott to Join Maroon 5 at Super Bowl Halftime Show

Maroon 5 will have some special guests with them when they headline the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show.

While no names have been confirmed, Cardi B and Travis Scott are on the short list to join Adam Levine and his bandmates during Super Bowl LIII at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Feb. 3, Billboard reports.

Cardi has already collaborated with Maroon 5 on the remix to their Red Pill Blues single “Girls Like You,” which is currently No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Despite the news, a spokesperson for the NFL would neither confirm or deny Maroon 5’s booking. “It’s a Super Bowl tradition to speculate about the performers for the Pepsi Halftime Show,” said the rep. “We are continuing to work with Pepsi on our plans but do not have any announcements to make on what will be another epic show.”

During a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, Levine revealed that the Super Bowl would be a dream gig for him and his bandmates. “We very actively want to play the Super Bowl,” he said.

Maroon 5 follows recent Super Bowl halftime performers including Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Bruno Mars.
