‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ Director Malcolm D. Lee Talks Helming His First Animation and LeBron James’ Future In Acting

Space Jam 2 Director Malcolm D. Lee Talks Helming His First Animation and LeBron James Future In Acting

Space Jam: A New Legacy starring LeBron James is set to premiere on Friday, July 16th and anticipation is high!

We caught up with the director Malcolm D. Lee, who is best known for directing The Best Man and Girl’s Trip, at the Court Tune Up at Mae Grant Park in Harlem, New York.

The Court Tune Up was a two-day Space Jam-themed block party celebrating legacy court coming to the playground and the release of the movie.

Malcolm D. Lee has been putting in work for over two decades and although Space Jam 2 marks his first animation film, he admits “there’s no way I would’ve been able to make this movie” without his prior experience.

Malcolm D. Lee talks LeBron James’ future in acting, names his favorite Looney Tune character, and gave The Best Man fans an update on the upcoming television series adaptation.

Miss2Bees: Don Cheadle said that LeBron James delivered an Oscar-worthy performance. Do you agree with this statement?

Malcolm D. Lee: Oscar-worthy? I mean, he’s really good. I mean, LeBron is a tremendous talent. I think he’s got a lot of range. So I, what I will say is, I don’t think this is going to be his last movie and it’ll be well-deserved.

MS2B: I believe this marks your first time working on animation, right? Were there any difficulties that you faced?

MDL: A lot! I mean, you know, just, just, you know, not knowing the process of animation and how it works and visual effects. I was very intimidated by that, but, you know, once I understood what all it was about and how the process works, I was all in. And I just felt like, you know these are just storytelling tools that are in the filmmakers’ toolbox. So I was very glad to, you know, get past the veil of mystery and say, ‘oh, okay. This is how this works.’ And so fortunately I had like some of the best people in the business, working with me, both on the animation side at Warner animation group, as well as ILM (Industrial Light and Magic). So, you know, having them there kind of showing me the ropes, this was like, oh, okay. But if I hadn’t had 10 movies under my belt and 20 years of experience, there’s no way I would’ve been able to make this movie.

MS2B: Was the most fun moment of making this movie?

MDL: You know, I, I think I would say it’s not necessarily when I was shooting, because it was very, very tough. I would say it’s when every time we would do a visual effects review and see where we were progressing with our characters or with our world building, it was amazing. It was like, it was like Christmas on my birthday, seeing how the film kept getting more and more elevated with each pass that we would do. So I think that was, that was most of the dirt.

MS2B: Who is your favorite Looney tune? Character,

MDL: Daffy duck. That’s my dude, man. Like, you know, he’s sarcastic and he’s droll. You always got a plan to make money. It doesn’t always work out. Um, he’s just, he’s, he’s the funniest to me.

MS2B: So we don’t have too much time left, but you have been in the game for a long time, contributed to Hollywood with The Best Man and Girls Trip. Do you plan to be a part of The Best Man television series?

MDL: Of course, I’m spearheading it. That series doesn’t happen without me.

MS2B: What’s the progress on that? Can we get any exclusive insight on that project?

MDL: We’re starting our writer’s room very, very soon. And we start filming in, uh, February.

MS2B: I am curious to know, will Terrence Howard to be a part of it? Because he announced his retirement right after Empire ended.

MDL: He is retired, but he’s coming out of retirement for this good.

SOURCE SPORTS: LeBron James to Have Personal Basketball Court on ‘Space Jam 2’ Set

LeBron James is focused on his summer plans, which include filming Space Jam 2, however, he has not forgotten about Laker Nation and is getting a full-length basketball court built on the set of the film.

Space Jam 2 will be the first film that will have King James as the lead actor and he is making sure that he keeps his performance up during the filming of his movie and not missing his workouts.

LeBron has seen this early offseason as a challenge, different the norm as he has an additional two months to train and be prepared for the next campaign stating to The Athletic “I like being counted out. It motivates me.”

Keeping the comparisons with the GOAT rolling, Michael Jordan also had his own court on the original Space Jam set. ESPN details the set received visitors like Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Reggie Miller, Dennis Rodman and more would show up. The Miller game was particularly intriguing as it was described as “a clear-out-and-let-em-go-at-it game” that was full of trash talk. Overall the set was described as an offseason All-Star game.

The LeBron court could bring a host of friends ranging from Chris Paul to Dwayne Wade. It could double as the new offseason home for Carmelo Anthony and possibly bring in Kevin Durant for that “clear out” game.

Space Jam 2 hits theaters in 2021.

Ray Allen Thinks Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and James Harden Should Star in ‘Space Jam 2’

We are all excited for the much anticipated Space Jam 2 movie that is said to be starring Lebron James just like Michael Jordan did in the original movie. The question at hand is who will replace the supporting cast members?

NBA Hall Of Famer Ray Allen weighs in on who should replace the original monsters in the movie: Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, Muggsy Bogues and Shawn Bradley. He recommends Kevin Durant, James Harding, and Stephan Curry just to name a few.

For all our late 80’s and early 90’s babies, I’m sure you all looking forward to another all star NBA cast turned movie monstars in the next Space Jam movie.

LeBron and Bugs Bunny may have some serious issues if Ray Allen’s picks get chosen.

LeBron James’ ‘Space Jam 2’ May Feature Michael Jordan Cameo

The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that Ryan Coogler will deliver a follow-up to Michael Jordan’s Space Jam, with LeBron James leading the pack this time around. “[Ryan] gave this generation’s kids something I didn’t have when I was a kid,” James said in the Sept. 19 issue. “And that’s a superhero movie with an African-American cast.”

LBJ compared his role to a superhero role for a franchise. “I always wanted to be a superhero. Batman was my favorite. But I knew I could never be Bruce Wayne,” the Los Angeles Lakers forward explained. “You’ve got to understand, for me that was in no way possible; I never felt like I could be the president of a multibillion-dollar company.”

At the point when Warner Bros. greenlit the idea in 2016, Justin Lin was connected to write and direct; at the time, Michael Jordan proposed Blake Griffin, another well known NBA player, should star in the motion picture.

But it was LeBron James that got the movie off the ground.

Space Jam 2 is really happening. LeBron James is officially set to start next year with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler producing the film.

The Hollywood Reporter says that production is set to start on the Warner Bros. movie during the NBA off-season in 2019.

“The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie,” James tells THR. “It’s so much bigger. I’d just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don’t just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people.”

Bugs Bunny is down, but no word on if Michael Jordan will make a cameo.

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is getting ready to level up with NBA superstar LeBron James. New reports claim Coogler and King James will work together for the upcoming Space Jam sequel.

According to reports, Coogler will take on the role of producer as Hollywood heavyweight Terence Nance directs the long-awaited follow-up to 1996’s blockbuster movie.

In his first project since directing the record-breaking Black Panther, Ryan Coogler is teaming with LeBron James on the long-anticipated follow-up to the Michael Jordan-Bugs Bunny hit Space Jam, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Coogler will produce the new Space Jam movie and Terence Nance, who created HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness and directed the experimental film The Oversimplification of Her Beauty, will direct. Production on the Warner Bros. film is tentatively slated for 2019, during the NBA off-season. It will be James’ first starring role after a successful turn as a supporting character in the 2015 Amy Schumer comedy Trainwreck. (The Hollywood Reporter)

James has since confirmed Coogler’s involvement and credited Ryan’s work on this year’s Black Panther smash.

“I loved his vision” for Black Panther, James tells The Hollywood Reporter, noting that when he was a kid growing up in Akron, Ohio, there were no black superheroes. “So for Ryan to be able to bring that to kids, it’s amazing.” (The Hollywood Reporter)
