It looks like Jay-Z and Beyoncé aren’t the only award winners in the Carter household.

On Sunday (Nov.17) Jay-Z and Beyoncé‘s 7-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, took home the prestigious Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award at the 2019 Soul Train Awards for her contribution to the melanin love song, “Brown Skin Girl.”

“Brown Skin Girl” was released in July as part of “The Lion King: The Gift” soundtrack and features Blue Ivy’s vocals at the beginning and end of the track, along with Nigerian singer Wizkid and Guyanese artist Saint Jhn. The celebratory hit went viral  over the summer after Black women and girls of ever hue uploaded videos of themselves embracing their brown skin-many of which were posted to both Beyoncé and her mom, Tina Knowles-Lawson’s Instagram accounts.

Rival Bands, Grambling State and Southern University, Unite to Break Soul Train Record

Words by: Kevin Keise

Typically on the weekend of the Bayou Classic, Grambling State University and Southern University are at each other’s neck for the unofficial crown in their battle of the bands. This time, during the 45th year, history was made in Baton Rouge, LA. BET Networks partnered with the Bayou Classic and the National Artist Development Group to execute a Guinness World Record.

For the first time, The World Famed Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band, The Human Jukebox, Southern’s band, and the students in attendance, all united in the name of peace, love, and soul to break the world record for the longest Soul Train Dance Line ever. The 2018 Soul Train Music Awards broke the news.

According to the Guinness World Records, the previous record for the largest Soul Train dance consisted of 426 participants, which was achieved by Goodyear Ballpark (USA) in Goodyear, Ariz, on 4 July 2014.
