Q&A With Maryland’s Top Underground Artist Shaw Calhoune

Yo Shaw Calhoune!! We really appreciate you rocking with UGHHBLOG! You’re definitely a true stand out artist out of Maryland for 2021. Please tell us how many years you’ve been making music? For those unfamiliar, please shed some light on your background in the Hip Hop game. Please detail.

I’ve always written music that was something I kept to myself early on for a while but seriously, recoding music this is my 4th year. Started with doing cypher than that turned into doing features and singing on hooks then gradually recording my music.

Please shine some light on your city, how is the underground Hip Hop scene out there?

The underground rap scene in Maryland is unique but at the same time marvelous. Because you can make what you make and everyone doesn’t sound the same I’m my opinion also the rap scene is very competitive and I do see it expanding especially in boom-bap.

Your career has had a strong second wind over the past few years. Do you find most of your fanbase familiar with you from your old projects like “THE OUTLOOK”, or do you feel that you’ve been discovered in recent years more so on the merit of your new music. Please detail.

Some but not all are familiar with “the outlook” but what got fans familiar with me was the singles I put out after outlook song like changes, streamline, trenches, Snnt, and time is not waiting. The fan base expanded when i released the Rudy tape

When compared to other artists, what is it about Shaw Calhoune that stands out and makes you unique from the pack. Please detail.

What makes me stand out as an artist is my ears for beats, my punchlines, my work ethic and my persists in bettering my craft.

Wow, your latest album “The Rudy Tape” is a true BANGER in our books, your delivery & style is truly out of this world!  Tell us the story behind your recent project, And a little about the album cover concept!

The story behind Rudy tape was to show the world not only my lyrical ability but to show the world my love for blaxploitation films in the 70s. 2016 curren$y released a project called the legend of Harvard Blue the character/ villain in the blaxploitation film truck turner starring Issac Hayes. My favorite track off the album is Rudy Moore and actions speak louder than words. The favorite line from the two is highly celebrated niggas think I was assassinated. The other is I should coach semi cause I got a squad the pros with semi though y’all don’t here though. And shit is marvelous on the haggler tip 248 Kobe hitting a dagger shit

For this new year 2021, what do we have to look forward to when it comes to new Shaw Calhoune music?  Please reference your forthcoming projects that you’re at liberty to speak of.

The next project I’m working on is called “Carryout On Shaw” I don’t have a date yet but that’s the next installment.

Due to the pandemic, how are you pivoting with making music around this whole Covid 19 situation?

Far as the pandemic it hasn’t slowed me down in terms of making music because I have my own set up/studio and I just send the stems to my engineer new jeruse (shoutout). The only bomber is doing shows at Venus.

We have to ask, with all this social discourse and revolt, protesting and rioting, exposed police brutality toward blacks and BLM, how do you guys feel about this? We would love your perspective on the climate we are living in right now?

My feelings towards what’s happening right now with protesting and police brutality are somewhat bittersweet because on a good note I feel like people around regardless of what race did unite in bringing awareness of police brutality towards blacks but still haven’t made any changes. I feel like someone has to change the reform and system that has not been in our favor for over 400 years.

Our most popular question!!  What is your definition of “underground Hip Hop”?

My definition for ughh is to simply express and reveal what goes on in your neighborhood in terms of the community, slang, fashion, way of life.

Shaw Calhoune – “The Rudy Tape” (Album Review)

Shaw Calhoune is a rapper from Maryland who has recently blessed us with his new 9 track album, “The Rudy Tape”. The rapper, known for his heavy hitting bars and boom bap production, enlists the help of some very cool samples from the late, great Rudy Ray Moore, himself. From start to finish, this tape is sprinkled with sound bites of the Godfather of Rap.

“Rudy Moore” is the second track on the project and Shaw delivers a special performance. Several different flows and multi syllable rhyme schemes over production that has you feeling like going for a cruise in a Coupe Deville. This beat is menacing, gritty and gangster. The perfect way to start this project.

“Henny Bottles” is a future classic. Minimal percussion, but a super lush bass laced with a string section and some keys. This is whiskey and cigar music. Shaw’s flow is consistent on this song, reminiscent of a Rick Ross vibe as he uses his lyricism to embody the character of the 70’s pimp, Dolemite. Yes, as far as concept albums go, this is truly impressive.

“Changing of The Guard” is another stand out. That sax was among my favourite moments in this entire project. Again, this one isn’t heavy on the percussion. But it is big on the horns and the woodwind sections. This gives Shaw Calhoune the opportunity to smoothly ride over the beat, playing with different rhyme schemes and seamlessly switching flows. His gritty delivery gives this song a heavy presence without the need for a hard hitting kick.

If you love samples, boom bap, clever rhyme schemes, story telling lyricism and concept projects; then this is the album you have been waiting for! I am honestly pretty happy that this was the first album that I got to review for the year. Shaw Calhoune has set the bar nice and high. This project had a consistent cadence to it that I haven’t heard in a while. Calhoune used vocal samples from Rudy Moore to really bring everything together and the story telling was masterful. Score: 9/10

“Streamline”, some of the latest music by Shaw Calhoune. A song with heavy punchlines over a dope animated video, he stays true to that raw boom bap style in this one.
