Today In Hip Hop History: Rawkus Records Released The ‘Lyricist Lounge Volume One’ Album 26 Years Ago

lyricist lounge

On May 5th, 1998 Rawkus Records released the first installment of the Lyricist Lounge albums titled Lyricist Lounge, Volume One, which showcased New York. It was a double-disc compilation that featured De La Soul, Mos Def, Q-Tip, Tash of Tha Alkaholiks, Punch & Words, O.C, Ras Kass, Black Thought, Common, Pharoahe Monch, Saul Williams, Kool Keith, Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek, Bahamadia, Rah Digga, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Jurassic 5, KRS-One, Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine, Last Emperor, and Company Flow.

This CD is one of those that you don’t get often. It had incredible and intensely clever wordplay, and was great for the culture because of the positive support it showed for hip hop. Back then everyone thought hip-hop was rap music and rap music was gangsta. It made people think twice before making an assumption like that. Any hip-hop purist who enjoys freestyles and great rhymes that make you think then this is the album for you.

Shabaam Sahdeeq & Nick Wiz Raise THe Heat With New Album “Cabin Fever”

Underground hip hop icon Shabaam Sahdeeq and renowned music producer Nick Wiz return to their roots to bring us a wildly versatile body of work titled “Cabin Fever.” There’s no doubt that over the past few years most of us were quarantined and may have felt a bit of Cabin fever from time to time. That said, it is clear that while many of us were moping about, Shabaam and Nick Wiz used their time wisely by creating a melodic masterpiece for us.

While Shabaam delivers top tier lyrics, Nick’s musical genius shines through on his elite production. The soundscape contains eleven electrifying tracks with both local and global appeal. The lineup also has a few powerhouse features from D.V. alias Khryst, LoVel, Ran Reed, R.E.K.S & Phantasm and U.G (each from the the Cella Dwellas) . The duo dropped riveting ‘Thunderin’ with a visual to set the tone for the entire project, which depicts themselves, as characters from the highly popular adult cartoon “South Park”. What’s even more amazing,19 year old Shabaam Sahdeeq makes an appearance on the last joint “Do or Die” that was originally a demo that only aired on Stretch & Bobbito Radio show back in 1996, when Shabaam Sahdeeq first surfaced. Shabaam also showcases his bilingual skills on banger “Soul Food Sofrito” going back to his Venezuelan roots.

This is the collaboration we knew we needed! Cabin Fever is an instant head nodder and a truly outstanding listening experience. It’s official, Shabaam Sadeeq and Nick Wiz have done it again!!

Shabaam Sahdeeq – “A New Beginning” (Prod. By Cuth)

Hip Hop indie veteran Shabaam Sahdeeq releases his new single titled “A New Beginning” produced by Cuth.

Sahdeeq has proven to be one of the most consistent MCs and figures in Hip Hop culture who carries an extensive music catalog under his belt. “A New Beginning” comes just in time for Spring and Summer and is ideal for blaring on rooftops, weekend cook-outs, on the b-ball court with crisp kicks, or even through a boombox on the beach.

With intricate wordplay and ingenious lyricism, Sahdeeq highlights his career and reign in the music industry. What comes to mind after listening to the track is gifted…prolific…greatness. His flow is nothing less than flawless over Cuth’s smooth 70’s tones and soulful production.
