SOURCE SPORTS: Knicks Employees Concerned About Lack of Statement Following Killing of George Floyd

The Knicks will somehow Knick everything. ESPN reports an internal email went out to employees regarding their lack of a public statement about the death of George Floyd.

What made the team halt? In their words, “we are not any more qualified than anyone else to offer our opinion on social matters.”

We know that some of you have asked about whether our company is going to make a public statement about the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer,” the email read. “I want you to know, I realize the importance of this issue. Therefore, I want you to understand our internal position.

“This is a turbulent time in our country. The coronavirus and civil unrest have taken their toll on our way of life. We at Madison Square Garden stand by our values of respect and peaceful workplace. We always will.”

Every other NBA franchise has made a statement, except for the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. Despite the lack of a formal statement, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and Knicks players like Dennis Smith Jr. have made personal statements or participated in protests.

A familiar face will return to the San Antonio Spurs bench this coming NBA season, but this time in an entirely new role. Future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan will join the Spurs staff as an assistant coach after giving 19 seasons of his life to the squad.

From NBA.com:

The San Antonio Spurs on Monday announced that Will Hardy and Tim Duncan will be added to Gregg Popovich’s bench as assistant coaches.

Hardy first joined the Spurs as a basketball operations intern in 2010 after graduating from Williams College.

“Will Hardy is a talented, young basketball mind who has earned a great deal of respect from everyone in the organization thanks to his knowledge, spirit and personality,” said Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich.

Duncan, a 1997 Wake Forest graduate, played 19 seasons with the Spurs before retiring in the summer of 2016.

In hilarious Pop fashion, the grizzled coach offered in the press release, “It is only fitting, that after I served loyally for 19 years as Tim Duncan’s assistant, that he returns the favor.”

According to Spurs lore, Duncan and Popovich shared a similar no-nonsense approach to the game. Could Pop be grooming Timmy for the head coaching role? Time will tell.

The San Antonio Spurs Announced They Will Retire Manu Ginobili’s Number 20

The San Antonio Spurs will retire Manu Ginobili’s #20 jersey Thursday, March 28th when the team hosts the Cleveland Cavaliers. Ginobili will become the ninth player in Spurs franchise history to have his number raised to the rafters, joining Bruce Bowen (12), Tim Duncan (21), Sean Elliott (32), George Gervin (44), Avery Johnson (6), Johnny Moore (00), David Robinson (50) and James Silas (13).

The four-time champion is just one of seven players in NBA history to play with one team for at least 16 seasons, joining Duncan, Kobe Bryant, John Havlicek, Reggie Miller, Dirk Nowitzki, and John Stockton. Ginobili and Bill Bradley are the only players in NBA history to win an NBA championship, Olympic gold medal, and Euro League title.

Selected by San Antonio with the 57th overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft, Ginobili appeared in 1,057 career games, averaging 13.3 points, 3.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.32 steals in 25.4 minutes. He is the Spurs all-time leader in three-pointers made (1,495) and steals (1,392) while ranking third in games played (1,057), fourth in assists (4,001), fourth in free throws made (3,380) and fifth in points (14,043). Ginobili was named to the All-NBA Third Team in both 2008 and 2011 and was a two-time All-Star (2005 and 2011). The 2008 NBA Sixth Man of the Year is the first sixth man, as well as the first South American, to earn All-NBA honors.

Ginobili and LeBron James are the only two players in NBA postseason history with at least 3,000 points and 300 three-pointers in the playoffs.
