Not everyone loves the old Kanye. One queen of soul regrets lending her talents to one of his most early hits.
As spotted on Uproxx Chaka Khan made a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. During the flow of the conversation the topic of West sampling her classic “Through The Fire” on his debut single “Through The Wire” came up. While she once performed it live with Yeezy at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards, she has since admitted that she wasn’t a fan of the track.
When pressed further by Bravo Andy she spilled the tea on how it all came together. “He called me when he just got out of the hospital. He said, ‘You were so instrumental in my healing process. I changed the words a little bit to the song but I had to eat through a wire. Jaw’s wired shut through a straw.’ It meant that much to me. It really got my heart, tugged at my string. I was like, ‘Yeah, use it.’”
She went on to pan the song. “Then when it came out – I was pissed. I thought it was a little insulting. Not insulting: I thought it was stupid! If I’d known he was gonna do that, I would have said, ‘Hell no.’ You can see the Chicago songstress trash Kanye below.
Nicki Minaj found herself in the crosshairs of singer and songwriter Tracy Chapman after an unreleased track was leaked to the public. Minaj has fired back at Chapman, saying that while she did use the sample, the song was never sold and thus she doesn’t have to pay up.
According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Minaj is denying all allegations of wrongdoing in the case brought by Chapman claiming Nicki sampled her song “Baby Can I Hold You” on a track with Nas titled “Sorry.”
Minaj admits her team made several requests to Chapman to use her music and says those requests were denied. She also says she did record the song before getting permission.
In the court docs, Minaj says she did want to put “Sorry” on her album “Queen” but left it off due to not having clearance.
The outlet adds that Funkmaster Flex leaked the song to the public thus landing it on Chapman’s radar. The singer is seeking damages and an injunction against Minaj from using any of her original music.
The LOX are three of the most prolific MCs in all of Hip-Hop. Styles P alone has released four projects this year. However, when he, Jadakiss, and Sheek Louch come together, it often awakens a spirit in Rap fans that has been burning bright for more than 20 years.
On 2018 group single “Never Over,” D-Block assures the faithful fans that they will never abandon ship. Instead, the Yonkers, New York trio teams up with trusted veteran hit-maker Rockwilder (Red & Meth, De La Soul, JAY-Z). However, while Rock’s sound around Y2K was a baton-carrying movement out of sampling, he goes back to his stacks of wax for this one. The LOX sample Boogie Down Productions’ iconic “The Bridge Is Over” for their Roc Nation single. The beat uses elements of the chorus as well as that out-of-tune piano that the group played on the original (reportedly at the suggestion of Nice & Smooth’s Greg Nice).
The video treatment is simple, and as expected for the assertive message. It’s a black-and-white affair with flashing lights, shades, knit caps, and a whole lot of attitude. These one-time Ruff Ryders are concrete to the core. Styles raps first, then Donnie, followed by a hard clean-up verse from ‘Kiss. He begins, “I can go anywhere as long as I got the toast / I do it for the East as long as I got the coast / Go out on my shield as long as I got my oath / And Hip-Hop can never be dead as long as I got a post / Grown man Rap, that’s the kiddie section / I was the fly on the wall in the Biggie session / Soaked it all up, spit it out, with aggression.”
