Join The Club: Daniel Kaluuya Says He’s Tired of Talking About Race: “It’s Just Boring to Me.”

"Queen & Slim" UK Premiere - Red Carpet Arrivals

Source: Lia Toby / Getty

Queen & Slim star and British actor Daniel Kaluuya may have broken into the industry by utilizing roles in films that creatively addresses the issue of race in America, he doesn’t want to be typecast because of it.

According to The Guardian, in a recent interview with Radio Times, the Get Out actor revealed that he’s over talking about race relations all the time.

“What is there to talk about race?” Kaluuya said. “It’s just boring to me. What’s the debate? I’m more of a doer — I’m just going to do what I want to do.”

While the Black Panther star may be tired of discussing the matters, he notes he’s not oblivious to the plight that he faces daily—he just refuses to be defined by it.

“I’m not going to ignore that I’m surrounded by [racism], but I’m not defined by it,” Kaluuya continued. “I’m just Daniel, who happens to be black.”

While the actor addressed that he gained mainstream success in films that largely took the topic head on, he asserts that his also resume includes a variety of television shows and movies where the characters and narratives weren’t.

The Fades ain’t about race, Psychoville ain’t about race, Skins ain’t about race, Chatroom ain’t about race, Johnny English Reborn ain’t about race,” Kaluuya said. “But that almost gets erased. There’s a narrative that is pushed.”

Although Queen & Slim is being championed as the modern day Black Bonnie and Clyde story, Kaluuya states that it was the underlying love story that drew him to the role more than anything else.

“Yes, it’s got those moments [about race] but that’s more of a catalyst,” he said.

Despite his objections to being typecast, Kaluyya is gearing up to star in a biopic about Fred Hampton, the Chicago-based assassinated leader of the Black Panther party. The film, which is still in development, is set to be directed by Black Panther‘s Ryan Coogler and will also star Kaluuya’s Get Out co-star, Lakeith Stanfield.

At the time the project was announced, Kaluuya made a similar statement noting that it’s a lot of pressure for one Black celebrity to be labeled as the spokesperson for all Black people.

“I’m not a spokesperson, I’m an individual,” Kaluuya told The Guardian at the time. “Who’s the spokesperson for white people? There isn’t one. No one’s expected to speak up for all white people. I’m just living my life. I’m a black man, I’m proud of it, but I’m just living my life.”

MLK Now: J. Cole Speaks Candidly About the Music Industry Exploiting Artists Who Make Drug-Using Music

J. Cole was one of the many notable, influential figures that attended the 2020 MLK Now conversation in Harlem, New York on Monday afternoon.

The rapper participated in a panel discussion with Marshawn Lynch that was moderated by Ryan Coogler. The director asked the men how they felt about their respective industries exploiting young, Black talent.

The question was initially directed to Cole because we’re witnessing a drug addiction crisis within Hip Hop unfold, but as long as these artists are making big bank no one cares about their health or the negative impact of their music.

Coogler asked, “Do you think it’s ethical for companies to sign kids that rap about addiction, to reap benefits off of their music and not get them help?” Cole quipped, “The clear answer is No. The next answer is capitalism. Is capitalism ethical?”

Elsewhere in the conversation, J. Cole talks about the point in his career when he grew tired of rapping about himself. The time, it was after the Forest Hill Drive album, at a time in my life where I was just tired of like, rapping about myself,” he explained. “So much of my art was storytelling from my own perspective. I’d always give you branches of someone else’s perspective but so much of it was like my personal journey, my personal growth, my personal flaws, this, that and the third. And it was a time period when I was like that was not interesting to me.”

Wait, When?: ‘Black Panther 2’ Hits Theaters In 2022

Disney Studios Showcase Presentation At D23 Expo, Saturday August 24

Source: Jesse Grant / Getty

Our return to Wakanda is going to take a long minute. Yesterday (August 24) at Disney’s D23 EXPO 2019 in Anaheim, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler revealed that the highly anticipated follow up to his blockbuster is due in theaters in May 2022.

That would be May 6, 2022 specifically.

Bruh, that’s damn near THREE years away!

“We’re not taking our time, we’re really trying to get it right,: said Coogler.

Word is Coogler has already delivered a treatment and title to Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, but neither gave up the details—including who will be the film’s villain.

The rumor mill, thanks to General Okoye’s commentary in Avengers: Endgame, is that the villain is likely to be Namor the Submariner.

But seriously, can we move that release date up?

Black Panther & Kendrick Lamar Receive Oscar Nominations

The nominations for next month’s 91st Academy Awards just announced this morning (January 22). The televised event set to take place on February 24. For fans of Black Panther and BlacKkKlansmen in particular, there may be good reasons to watch.

Both Black Panther and BlacKkKlansmen are nominated for the highest honor, “Best Picture.” Ryan Coogler’s record-breaking Marvel film competes against Spike Lee’s adaptation of a real-life Black police officer in Colorado Springs who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan. Lee produced his film with an ensemble that also includes Jordan Peele. These works take on a category of nominees that also includes Green Book, A Star Is Born, Vice, Roma, The Favourite, and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Black Panther Is Not A Movie. It’s A Movement & It’s Bigger Than Box Office Success.

Spike Lee is also nominated for “Best Director.” Despite past nods for Do The Right Thing and Four Little Girls, the Brooklyn, New Yorker has never won this prize. Lee did receive an honorary Oscar award in 2015 for his film making. Notably, Ryan Coogler did not receive the directorial consideration for Black Panther. Lee competes against peers such as former SNL head writer Adam McKay, who is nominated for Vice. Like Lee, McKay has been previously nominated without a win.

Lee also is nominated for “Best Adapted Screenplay.” He joins his team of Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, and Kevin Willmott. Moonlight‘s Barry Jenkins is also in the category for If Beale Street Could Talk. These screenwriters will battle against Bradley Cooper and his A Star Is Born team, along with The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs‘ Joel and Ethan Coen, who have received this award in the past for No Country For Old Men.

Another noteworthy nomination goes to Kendrick Lamar. K-Dot, along with SZA, receive recognition for Black Panther‘s “All The Stars.” Released at the top of 2018, the song is one of 14 tracks curated by Kendrick and TDE founder Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith for the superhero film. That chart-topping soundtrack, which featured many TDE artists as well as 2 Chainz, Vince Staples, Anderson .Paak, The Weeknd, and Travis Scott, has since been certified platinum.

If the TDE song wins, the Compton, California superstar joins past collaborators Eminem and Common, as well as Three 6 Mafia as a Hip-Hop artist with an Oscar for their “Best Original Song” victories. The first Rap artist with a Pulitzer Prize could potentially add to a trophy case that also includes 12 Grammy Awards, a number which could grow before the 91st Academy Awards.

Black Panther’s Director Reveals How He Got Kendrick Lamar To Curate The Soundtrack

Kenny, SZA and “All The Stars” producers Sounwave and Al Shux, compete against Common’s past collaborator Diane Warren and Jennifer Hudson for “I’ll Fight.” They also battle with Lady Gaga’s “Shallow,” which is a collaboration with Mark Ronson, among others.

Other points of note include Regina King’s “Best Supporting Actress” nod for If Beale Street Could Talk. If she wins, this marks the first Oscar for the actress who appeared in Boyz N The Hood, Friday, and Higher Learning early in her film career, which followed a long TV role on 227. One of 2017’s big winners, Mahershala Ali, gets for “Best Supporting Actor” look for Green Book. In this category, he will compete against Adam Driver for his BlacKkKlansmen performance.

Last October, Ryan Coogler was confirmed to be at work on writing Black Panther 2.

The 91st Academy Awards will broadcast on ABC. Following Kevin Hart’s withdrawal from the position, it will be the first Oscars without a designated host since 1989.

Snoop Dogg Links Ryan Coogler And Lee Daniels For Upcoming Biopic

Uncle Snoop is coming to the big screen.

Snoop Dogg’s substantial influence on the rap game has lasted for more than two decades. His instrumental contributions to West Coast Rap/Hip-Hop is the reason for a lot of the coast’s success. Now he is being honored with a biopic.

The “Gin and Juice” rapper recently visited Vic Jagger of 102.3 to break down the biopic.

“I’m thinking more along the lines of when you watch a great show like Narcos on Netflix,” he says. Snoop is an avid Netflix watcher as we can see.

He dives deeper into the detail about the biopic. “I already got with somebody. I don’t even want to expose the names like that.”

The Doggy Pound does the complete opposite, detailing it will be a conjunction with Lee Daniels and Ryan Coogler. Daniels has directed and produced a number of film and shows including, The Butler, Empire, and Star. Coogler directed Black Panther, Fruitville Station, and Creed. Both of these esteem directors are the best that Hollywood has to offer. Snoop Dogg’s biopic is in great hands.

Ryan Coogler has signed up to write and direct Black Panther 2. Wait, they didn’t sign him up for this gig immediately after the release of the first movie?

The Associated Press reports that “a source close to the production” confirmed that Coogler will be back behind the camera to the sequel to the Marvel blockbuster starring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa aka the Black Panther.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Coogler and his team took their time in negotiating the new deal.

Black Panther reportedly grossed $1.3 million worldwide. That bag must have been really, really heavy.

Up next for Coogler is Creed 2, which he executive produced and eventually Space Jam 2, starring LeBron James.

Ryan Coogler to Write, Direct ‘Black Panther 2’

Ryan Coogler is coming back to Wakanda. Sources disclose to Variety that Coogler is ready to write and direct the follow-up for the super successful, Black Panther.

Chadwick Boseman is expected to reprise his main role as T’Chala, along with the rest of the A-List cast.

Black Panther broke film industry records not long ago, making $1.3 billion around the world, including $700 million locally — the greatest U.S. film industry net for any Marvel film. The motion picture is likewise anticipated that would be in honors dispute, as is Coogler for coordinating.

Variety reports that production is expected to begin one year from now or 2020. Coogler is trying to shoot a smaller motion picture before the sequel, one including, 12 Angry Men. It is obscure if Black Panther 2 will now turn into his essential concentration or if he’ll try to make both work.

Ryan Coogler is executive producing Creed 2, which releases one month from now.
