Run the Jewels Announces Multiple Nights of Shows In Chicago, NYC, ATL and LA to Celebrate 10-Year Anniversary

Run the Jewels Announces Multiple Nights of Shows In Chicago, NYC, ATL and LA to Celebrate 10-Year Anniversary

The renowned rap group Run the Jewels, consisting of Killer Mike from Atlanta and Brooklyn’s EL-P, has announced RTJX – Celebrating 10 Years of Run The Jewels, a series of anniversary live concerts to be held in New York City, Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles this fall.

Following the 10th anniversary of the duo’s self-titled debut, the group will play four gigs in each city, with a different set each night that draws from the band’s entire record. Along the road, there will be many special guests and surprises. It will be the band’s first significant concert since wrapping up their now-famous tour with Rage Against The Machine in 2022, which included five sold-out nights at Madison Square Garden, as well as their first and only run of club events in North America since the release of their album RTJ4 in 2020.

“It’s mind blowing to us that it’s been 10 years since we joined forces as RTJ. The best way we can think to celebrate is to get the whole family together and do what we love for the people who love us back. It’s going to be amazing, just like this entire ride has been, and we are grateful to get a chance to celebrate with our jewel runners this year and finally get back into clubs to destroy some stages for you. We’re doing 4 cities, 4 nights each, and 4 full albums worth of jams, many we have only performed a small handful of times during our whole existence. So on night one it’s RTJ1 in full plus many more songs from the other records, night two it’s RTJ2… etc. etc. We can’t wait to get out there and see you.“

– Jaime and Mike

Nike and Run The Jewels will collaborate to expand sports for a new generation starting next month. The skate community and its culture will be honored by the Nike SB Dunk Low and High “Run The Jewels.” The sneakers, which go on sale on April 20, are based on the cover art for the band’s most recent two albums. The High reimagines the cover from the 2020 album RTJ4, while The Low adopts the colors from the 2017 album Run The Jewels 3. The sneakers, which Killer Mike and El-P debuted at Mexico’s Corona Capital 2022, will be sold through neighborhood skate shops, Nike SNKRS, and a few other outlets.

The “Remy Rap” video, created by DJ Premier, features Grammy-nominated Rapsody and legendary femcee Remy Ma, both of whom are from the Bronx. The music video, which was directed by Maya Table, pays homage to early-nineties Hip Hop, right down to the bucket hats, Cuban link chains, and DJ Premier scratching on a turntable. It also has grainy black-and-white imagery of inner-city building rooftops.

In addition to Remy and Rapsody, DJ Premier: Hip Hop 50 Volume 1 features Nas, Lil Wayne, Run The Jewels, Joey Bada$$, and Slick Rick.

“I will always seize the moment of being unique when it comes to releasing music,” said Premier. “To be a part of Hip Hop 50 is an additional blessing to preserving the culture.”

The release is the first of 10 EPs with new music celebrating Hip Hop 50. The next nine editions will be curated by Swizz Beatz, Mustard, The-Dream, Mike Will Made It, No I.D., Hit-Boy, Take A Daytrip, and Tainy.

To commemorate Hip Hop’s 50th birthday, Mass Appeal has launched a big #HipHop50 project that features strategic alliances, all-encompassing worldwide activations, and creative content and programming. In order to offer live event content, Mass Appeal has announced its relationship with Live Nation Urban. This collaboration will produce moments that will unite the voices that made hip hop a way of life, from Park Jams to Festival stages.

Run the Jewels – “Run the Jewels 4” (Album Review)

Run the Jewels are a super-duo consisting of Killer Mike & El-P. They first crossed paths with each other in 2012 when the latter produced Mike’s 5th album R.A.P. (Rebellious African People) Music in it’s entirety, but came together officially the following year with a self-titled debut. Their sophomore album in 2014 is my personal favorite though, as it’s a lot darker. Last we heard from Mike & El-Producto together in a full-length capacity was in 2016 with their much more political 3rd album but in classic Run the Jewels fashion, they’re releasing their long awaited 4th album a couple days early.

Things kick off with “yankee & the brave (ep. 4)”, where the duo display their chemistry over an abstract chaotic instrumental. The next song “ooh la la” with Greg Nice sees the 3 talking about over a piano-inflicted boom bap beat while the track “out of sight” with 2 Chainz talks about being menaces over a vintage rap rock instrumental. The song “holy calamafuck” is a dark shit-talking anthem with a phenomenal beat switch about halfway through while the track “goonies vs. E.T.” talks about having another chance over an abrasive instrumental.

The song “walking in the snow” is pretty much a well-timed response George Floyd’s recent murder over a dynamic instrumental while the track “JU$T” with Zack de la Rocha of course talks about the industry over a Neptunes-influenced beat which is fitting because Pharrell kills it with his additional vocals. The song “never look back” talks about moving on from the past over a futuristic instrumental while “the ground below” talks about how love never meant much to them backed by an amazing sample of “Ether” by Gang of 4. The penultimate song “pulling the pin” cleverly uses grenades as a metaphor for their hearts over an instrumental with a cavernous instrumental with phenomenal guitar playing from Josh Homme & then the album finishes off with “a few words for the firing squad (radiation)”, where Killer Mike & El-P make an epic dedication to those whose voices were never heard over a more minimalist instrumental.

These guys now have 4 consecutive classics together, because this did not disappoint me at all. I love how they took all the elements of their first 3 albums & fused them all together into 1 near-perfect 39 minute album. The production is off the wall, their chemistry is unmatched at this point & the political commentary is perfect for everything that’s going in the world right now.

Score: 9/10

Run The Jewels Working On 4th LP With Rick Rubin

All Points East Festival - Week 2

Source: Robin Little / Getty

For three albums strong, the potent duo of Killer Mike and El-P, collectively known as Run The Jewels, have not only revived their careers for an incredible second leg, but also sparked a strong friendship between the two. With three years removed since their last project, the pair are hard at work on a new album and enlisted producer Rick Rubin to put his finishing touches on their work.

In a newsletter from the RTJ gang over the weekend, the crew announced their plans in working with Rubin with a promise that the new record will be better than their past works.

From RTJ:

Let’s start with the obvious…

We’ve been going hard on RTJ4 and have a genuine excitement to share new music with you all. We stand behind our statement that this record is going to punch you in the f*cking face and burn everything in its path. We thank you for your continued patience as we put together what we believe will be our best record yet.

We recently stopped by another friend’s studio in LA to keep sh*t moving.

Stay tuned, we’ll have more RTJ4 news for you soon.

The newsletter was accompanied by a photo of El-P and Rick Rubin doing the Run The Jewels hand symbol, which can be seen below.
