On Independence Day in 1986, Daryl McDaniels, his partner in rhyme Joseph Simmons and their DJ Jason Mizell, who are best known as the legendary Hip Hop group Run-D.M.C., released one of the most successful singles of their career; “Walk This Way”, which guest stars rock n’ roll vets Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith.

The rap version of the single, which appeared on Run-D.M.C.’s third album, Raising Hell, was a groundbreaking track that helped pioneer the fusion of rock’ n’ roll and Hip-Hop. The original song of the same name appeared on Aerosmith’s 1975 Toys In The Attic album.

Jury Selection Set to Begin in Trial of Men Charged with Murder of Jam Master Jay

Jam Master Jay's Family, Run-DMC Responds to Arrests Made in Late Rapper's Murder Case

Jury selection for the trial of two men accused of killing Jam Master Jay will get underway on Monday.

According to ABC News, 59-year-old Ronald Washington and 40-year-old Karl Jordan are facing charges for the October 2002 murder. Jay, born Jason Mizell, and others were at Jay’s 24/7 recording studio in Queens when the two men entered at 7:30 p.m. with guns.

Jordan is said to have fired two shots close range at Jam Master Jay, one hitting him in the head and killing him.

Jodan and Washington were believed to be engaged in cocaine trafficking. Jordan was arrested in 2020 for attempting to sell drugs to an undercover officer. Washington was already in prison when charged.

Top 23 of 2023: Hip-Hop Dominates The 2023 Grammys & VMAs

2023 VMAs

In a year filled with memorable moments and groundbreaking achievements, the 2023 Grammys and VMAs were ultimately saved by hip-hop. From record-breaking wins to captivating performances, the genre left an indelible mark on both award shows, leaving this moment to become the Top 10.

10. The Award Shows of 2023

The Grammys

The 65th Annual Grammy Awards witnessed an extraordinary celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary. Iconic artists like LL Cool J, Run DMC, Salt-N-Pepa, and Ice-T took the stage alongside the new generation of rappers, including Lil Baby and Lil Uzi Vert

However, the night truly belonged to Beyoncé, as she made Grammy history with 32 wins, solidifying her status as the most-awarded artist in Grammy history.

The singer garnered nine nominations, the highest for any artist that year, and became the first Black woman to win the Grammy for “Best Dance/Electronic Recording” with her album Renaissance. Quavo paid tribute to the late Takeoff, who unfortunately passed in November 2022, from a fatal shooting.

The VMAs

The 2023 VMAs faced criticism as controversies overshadowed the event. Fans were disappointed by the lackluster celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, which included repetitive performances. Rising stars Victoria Monét and Coi Leray were left out, stirring backlash.

Victoria Monét’s skyrocketing solo career contradicted MTV’s claim that it was “too early in her story” to perform, as she charted with her hit single “On My Mama” during the VMAs. Coi Leray expressed her gratitude towards BET for recognizing her achievements while feeling snubbed by the VMAs. Taylor Swift‘s domination in major categories also drew scrutiny.

However, the VMAs did recognize artists like SZA, who won “Best R&B Artist,” and Nicki Minaj, who claimed the title of “Best Hip-Hop Artist” and hosted the show, captivating the audience with a performance from her anticipated album, Pink Friday 2.

11. Ice Spice’s Reign

As the Grammys and the VMAs showcased the influence of hip-hop in 2023, one artist who emerged as a force to be reckoned with was Ice Spice. With her unstoppable rise in the music industry, the “Munch (Feelin’ U)” rapper proved her critics wrong and solidified her position as a rising star to watch in the coming years.

Run DMC Recounts Almost Being Involved In Tupac’s Tragic Shooting

DMC

Legendary hip-hop group Run DMC member Darryl McDaniels recently revealed that they narrowly escaped being involved in the same car on the night Tupac Shakur was shot. However, a last-minute wardrobe dilemma from Jam Master Jay ultimately saved the group.

Flashback To 1996

In a recent interview, Darryl McDaniels, known as DMC, shared the chilling details of how they were supposed to ride with Tupac and Suge Knight to the Mike Tyson fight afterparty. He began his recollection by stating:

“I remember the night ‘Pac died. We was hired by 662 to perform at the afterparty for the Tyson fight. This was when the Luxor was new. It was fly shit. So I’ll never forget, Suge Knight brought us there, paid for everything. We was hired for entertainment. So, we get a call, it’s Suge. This a funny Jay story. ‘Yo, me and ‘Pac coming to get y’all. You’re gonna ride to the fight with us.’ ‘Cause remember, who was in the BMW 750iL with them? Nobody was in the backseat. Me, Run and Jay was supposed to be in that backseat. He calls him up and says, “Yo, I’m coming to get y’all. We want y’all to ride to the fight with us.’”

The Dodged Bullet

Ultimately, Darryl explained that Jam Master Jay was the only reason they were not involved on the night of September 7, 1996.

Darryl continued stating:

“ Eric, my manager says, ‘Y’all go ahead without us. Suge says, “Why, what’s the problem?’ ‘Jay’s getting dressed.’ ‘Huh, what you talking about?’ When Jay would get dressed, Jay would have all his clothes out there. It’s worse than your wife or girl getting dressed. The reason why we ain’t ride to the fight with ‘Pac is ’cause Jay was getting dressed. Jay would spend hours. It would be a fashion show. Jay’s getting dressed. We say, ‘We’ll meet y’all at the afterparty.’ We get to the afterparty, Hammer’s there, the whole crew, everybody’s there, Mel Man, everybody’s there. “So we in the club waiting for the fight to end, all of a sudden one dude comes in. It’s about 100 people in there — they all leave. Empty cup, music off. A guy comes in with a briefcase. It’s me, Run and Jay. Everybody leaves. Guy comes with a briefcase, puts the briefcase on the table. Opens it up, it’s all cash. $200,000 cash there. ‘Y’all getting paid tonight, just no show. Go home.’ We didn’t know what was going on.”

The group later learned that they were paid a significant amount of money as a no-show for the afterparty, a cash exchange that now seemed suspicious in hindsight. He stated:

“So next morning, I had an afternoon flight. I’m in the gym on the treadmill and then CNN — ‘Last night in Vegas, 2Pac got shot.’ Like, ‘Oh shit, that’s why that happened.’”

Legal Battles & Exposés

On a somber note, the murder case tied to Tupac Shakur has resurfaced, with Duane “Keefe D” Davis standing trial. In September 2023, Davis was charged with the murder of Tupac Shakur, in which Davis has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

This trial date comes after recent developments and confessions related to Tupac’s death.

In addition, Suge Knight, known for his connection to the Tupac shooting, has launched a podcast, Collect Calls With Suge Knight. In one episode, Knight denied any ill feelings towards the accused shooter, Orlando Anderson, emphasizing that Anderson was not the actual shooter and had supported Knight during his legal proceedings.

Run DMC In A Brighter Light

In more positive news, Run DMC, along with Roxanne Shante and other influential figures, is set to be inducted into the National Hip Hop Museum Hall

This recognition comes as the hip-hop community celebrates the 50th anniversary of the genre. The induction ceremony, held by historian Jay Quan, honored these musicians with custom trophies and unique keepsakes.

Marlon Wayans Drops Bombshell

Marlon Wayans is another celebrity who opened up about the night Tupac was killed. During an interview on the Late Late Show with James Corden, Marlon talked with James and actor Marc Maron, where he shared that he saw both Tupac and Biggie moments before they were shot.

Jam Master Jay’s Family, Run-DMC Responds to Arrests Made in Late Rapper’s Murder Case

Jam Master Jay's Family, Run-DMC Responds to Arrests Made in Late Rapper's Murder Case

Jam Master Jay’s fatal shooting in 2002 sent shockwaves through the entire Hip Hop community. It was even more shocking when two people who were close to the late rapper were arrested and charged for his murder last week.

Ronald Washington and Karl Jordan, Jr. conspired to kill the rapper, born Jason Mizell because Washington was cut out of a ten-kilo drug deal that Mizell acquired.

Washington was publicly identified as one of the gunmen in 2007, and named as a person of interest in the 2017 Netflix documentary, ReMastered documentary Who Killed Jam Master Jay?

Mizell’s family said they had “mixed emotions” about the arrests.

“Upon hearing this news we have mixed emotions; we truly hope that these indictments are a solid step towards justice being served in the murder of Jay,” the family said via a post on Run-DMC’s official Twitter account.

“We realize that there are other families out there who have lingering pain who continue to wait for their own closure, and we pray that this case gives them hope. “

The statement continued, “In spite of all the tragedies we’ve seen this year alone, we take comfort in our family, our faith, and in time’s ability to heal all. We can only hope that this news brings awareness to the fact that Black lives do matter.”

“Although this latest news opens up a lot of painful memories for all of us who knew and loved Jam Master Jay, I’m relieved to hear that 2 suspects have been arrested and charged with his murder,” DMC said.

He continued: “It’s been a difficult 18 years not having him around while knowing that his murderers were not yet indicted for this heinous crime. I realize this is a first step in the judicial process, but I hope Jay can finally Rest in Peace. My love to Jay’s wife Terri, his sons, his family, his friends, and all of his fans. #JMJForever.”
