Rashida Jones, Daughter Of Quincy Jones, Recalls Rocky Relationship With Tupac

Screenshot 2024 07 10 at 1.48.26 PM

Rashida Jones, the daughter of Grammy Award winning producer Quincy Jones, says that her and her family had an up-and-down relationship with the late Tupac Shakur, but still considers him family.

In an interview with the New Yorker, which was published over the weekend(July 7), the actress recalled the open letter she wrote to ‘Pac in The Source following some disparaging remarks that Shakur made about the famed musician/producer.

“All he does is stick his dick in white bitches and make fucked up kids,” Pac said of Rashida’s father at the time.

“I do think that anyone who reads this article would be shocked by his ignorance and lack of respect for his people,” she said.  “To demean a man like Quincy Jones, a man who came from the ghetto of Chicago and through his talent and perseverance became a living music legend, demeans the whole progress of African Americans.”

She continued, “Where the hell would you be if Black people like him hadn’t paved the way for you to even have the opportunity to express yourself? I don’t see you fighting for you race. In my Opinion, you’re destroying it and shitting all over your people.”

30 years later, Rashida reflected on the letter she wrote, which was shortly before her older sister Kidada began dating Tupac.

Furious! So precocious, so self-righteous. Yeah, I was so mad,” she said. “It was a new perspective to me. I kind of understand the nuance more now that I’m older. It just felt like a completely unwarranted attack. It resolved itself really nicely, because when I met him, he immediately apologized to me, immediately apologized to my dad. We sat down and had a really good conversation about it, and then he was family.”

Danny Boy Refutes Keyshia Cole’s Claims That Tupac Told Her He Was Leaving Death Row Records

Danny Boy Refutes Keyshia Coles Claims That Tupac Told Her He Was Leaving Death Row Records

Looks like Danny Boy was tuned in to Keyshia Cole’s Verzuz celebration.

Keyshia Cole opened up about her surprising connection to Tupac Shakur during her Verzuz battle against Ashanti over the Summer.

MC Hammer introduced the singer was introduced to Suge Knight’s Death Row Records, and she claims Pac had plans to ditch Death Row to sign with Quincy Jones and wanted her to join him.

“I actually did know Tupac,” Cole said. “He wanted to sign me to Quincy when he was with Kidada, Quincy’s daughter, and he was gonna leave Death Row and go to sign with Quincy. He wanted me to go over there because he said that Death Row was not the place for kids.”

Danny Boy refuted Keyshia Cole’s claims in a recent interview with the Art of Dialogue.

“He ain’t told her shit,” Danny said. “Everybody was close to Pac when he died. Everybody. That’s all you hear. That’s what people do.”

Danny continued, “But Keyshia went up—Pac went up to her. How old was she? Twelve, 13-year-old? He let her hear some shit that could have really got him hurt? He wasn’t just gon’ walk and say anything about anybody, especially, ‘I’m finna leave Suge’ in front of a 13-year-old. He ain’t told her shit like that.”

According to Danny, Pac was too indebted to Suge for his departure to even be a thought.

Quincy Jones Didn’t Want To Work With Elvis Because He Was ‘Racist’

Quincy Jones Didn't Want To Work With Elvis Because He Was 'Racist'

Quincy Jones did an interview with The Hollywood Reporter and spoke about the protests for George Floyd and interacting with Billie Holiday and Elvis Presley.

“No. I wouldn’t work with him,” said Jones when asked if he would work with Presley.

“I was writing for [orchestra leader] Tommy Dorsey, oh God, back then in the ’50s. And Elvis came in, and Tommy said, “I don’t want to play with him.” He was a racist mother — I’m going to shut up now. But every time I saw Elvis, he was being coached by [“Don’t Be Cruel” songwriter] Otis Blackwell, telling him how to sing,” he spilled.

Quincy Jones isn’t the first person to accuse Elvis Presley of being a racist, and it was revealed that his biggest hit, “Hound Dog” was actually stolen from a Black woman named Big Mama Thornton.

The living legend spoke about his time working with Billie Holiday when he was a teenager, and shared the biggest lesson that she taught him.

“Oh my God, stay away from heroin,” said Jones. “She could barely get to the stage, man. She could barely walk on the stage, but Bobby Tucker was like my brother. He eventually became the music director for Billie. When she came out, we were so awestruck by her, we forgot to play the horn. He said, “Goddammit, read the music, man. Play the horns!” We were 14 years old. Come on, man. Billie Holiday.”

Andra Day recently portrayed the Jazz singer in the biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday, and many fans feel like she was snubbed of the 2021 Best Actress award that she was nominated for.

Quincy, who has lived throughout many eras in this country, was asked about former officer Derek Chauvin being found guilty for the murder of George Floyd.

“It’s been coming a long time, man. People have been turning their heads the other way, but it’s all the same to me — misogyny, racism. You have to be taught how to hate somebody. It doesn’t come naturally, I don’t think. I don’t think so, unless you’ve been trained. I just think it’s such a bad habit. These racists, oh my God. Asians? How the hell do you get mad at an Asian girl?”

Fat Joe Defends Himself After Receiving Backlash for Comparing DJ Khaled to Quincy Jones

Fat Joe Shares That He's 'One Million Percent' Taking The COVID-19 Vaccine

Fat Joe caught wind of some of the reactions to his comparison of DJ Khaled to Quincy Jones.

The veteran rapper appeared on Nore and DJ EFN’s Drink Champs Podcast, and they talked Khaled’s “Sorry Not Sorry” collaboration featuring JAY-Z and Nas.

“People take away the greatness from Khaled,” Fat Joe said. “And they say, ‘Well he just gets a bunch of big-time rappers and puts them on the same song.’ There’s a million DJs and producers that try that. And those ain’t hit records. And it’s been a long time since we’ve heard Nas and Jay-Z on what to me sounds like a smash hit. That’s a smash hit. They can play it on the radio, it’s streaming incredibly. So, Khaled really is the Quincy Jones of hip-hop right now.”

Fat Joe began trending immediately when fans caught wind that he crowned DJ Khaled the Quincy Jones of Hip Hop.

“Quincy is a trained multi-instrument musician, orchestra conductor, composer/arranger and visionary across multiple genres of music spanning 60 years,” one user wrote. “I got mad love/respect for Fat Joe and DJ Khaled, but this aint it. I would even say Khaled is not even a present top 5 DJ.”

After receiving backlash, Fat Joe hopped on social media to defend his remarks. “All these back seat drivers Monday morning quarterbacks always got an opinion but can’t do it themselves shit crazy.” Joe adds, “To me the term Quincy jones of this time was used in reference to the work khaled has put in years and years of hit obviously there’s only one Quincy but f*ck it tune in tonight EXPLOSIVE lol.”

Beat It: Judge Says Michael Jackson’s Estate Does Not Have to Pay Quincy Jones $6.9M in Royalties

Quincy Jones lost a $6.9 million appeal against Michael Jackson’s estate.

A three-judge panel of the secnd Appellate District overturned a chunk of a 2017 jury verdict, discovering the jury misinterpreted Jones’ contract.

Jones’ attorney argued the producer was owed $30 million in royalties and other income from the This Is It project, two Cirque du Soleil shows, and other revenue made from Jackson following his 2009 death.

In addition, Jones was granted $5.3 million in joint venture profits under his producer contract.

The trial went on for two weeks and Jones was granted $9.4 million. But an appeals court took more than half of that back on Tuesday, noting that Judge Michael L. Stern allowed the jurors to interpret the contract instead of doing it for them.

The appeals court ultimately decided that Jones wasn’t entitled to such an increase. “The language of section 4(a) cannot be tortured to mean that Jones’s maximum royalty rate increased proportionally if Jackson’s maximum royalty rate increased,” wrote Justice Judith Ashmann-Gerst, on behalf of a unanimous panel.

An additional $1.6 million was vacated for remix fees that Jones claimed he was owed. But the courts ruled that he shouldn’t be paid fees for remixing work he didn’t perform because he wasn’t rewarded refusal of remixes of his Jackson albums. “The only compensation Jones was entitled to receive was royalties from record sales on remixes, and the evidence indicates he received them,” Ashmann-Gerst wrote. “If he wanted remixing fees, he had to negotiate them in separate agreements.”

Quincy Jones was left with a cool $2.6 million which consisted of unpaid licensing fees from This Is It among other things.

Howard Weitzman, who represented the Jackson estate, issued a statement claiming vindication.

“Quincy Jones was the last person we thought would try to take advantage of Michael Jackson by filing a lawsuit three years after he died asking for tens of millions of dollars he wasn’t entitled to,” Weitzman said. “We knew the verdict was wrong when we heard it, and the court of appeal has completely vindicated us. From the beginning this was an attempt to take advantage of Michael knowing he wasn’t here to defend himself.”

John Branca, co-executor of the estate, also issued a comment: “So many people have tried to take advantage of Michael and mischaracterize him since his death. It’s gratifying that in this case the court in an overwhelmingly favorable and just decision, recognizes that Michael Jackson was both an enormous talent and an extremely fair business executive.”
