According to a report from Complex, Prodigy of the “Infamous” Mobb Deep will be celebrated four years after his untimely passing with a street naming ceremony in Queensbridge, which will be known as “Prodigy Way”.

41st Road and 12th Street, which is situated in the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, New York, will be recognized as Prodigy Way after a recent approval from City Council.

Prodigy, who was actually a native of Hempstead, Long Island, hung out in Queensbridge with QB native and the other half of Mobb Deep, Havoc, during their high school days at High School of Arts & Design. The co-naming of the block was pushed by Havoc, Big Twin, and Prodigy’s Fathers Alive in the Hood non-profit organization created to honor his legacy.

Happy 59th Birthday To Production Pioneer Marley Marl!

Screen Shot 2021 09 30 at 8.17.08 AM

Born Marlon Williamson this date in 1962 in NYC, the DJ, producer, and record label owner known as Marley Marl is a trailblazer of Hip Hop’s ever-evolving sound, being one of the first to use sampling as a means to gather elements for a song.

Starting with his days as the DJ for WBLS’ Mr. Magic in the early 80s, Marley used that leverage to break new artists and eventually form his own group known as the legendary Juice Crew. Based in his Queensbridge Housing apartment, “Marley’s House” became an epicenter for many Hip Hop legends in the early stages of their career including Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, MC Shan, Kool G Rap, and the Queensbridge Queen herself, Roxanne Shante. Marley’s production credits go on for eons, however, some of his most memorable work includes  Craig G’s The Kingpin, Big Daddy Kane’s Long Live The Kane, Biz Markie’s Goin’ OffKool G Rap & DJ Polo’s Road to the Riches, MC Shan’s Down By Law and Born to Be Wild and Roxanne Shante’s only album Bad Sister.

Salute to Marley on his 59th born day and wish him many more to come!

Today in Hip Hop History: Capone N Noreaga Drop Their Debut LP ‘The War Report’ 24 Years Ago

tumblr pt7xsss3KW1t1yehoo1 640

On this day in Hip Hop history, New York rap duo Capone N Noreaga released their first studio LP The War Report. Although Capone was arrested while working on the album, the album was put out seamlessly and stood as a very successful debut.

Considered to be a street classic, the edgy underground sound of this project fits perfectly with the sound of the era. The duo was able to mix their unorthodox delivery with hardcore streetwise metaphors and Five Percenter references to craft a project that would become a household name.

The album peaked at #21 on the Billboard 200 chart and #4 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop charts and featured popular artists Mobb Deep and Busta Rhymes, who both had sounds similar to that of the album. The album’s four singles all claimed spots on the Billboard Top Rap charts making this one of the more successful rap albums of the late 90s.

This album has been credited with reviving East Coast hardcore Hip Hop ending an ear of mafioso rap in New York and ushering in a new era of gangsta rap with artists like DMX, Ja Rule, 50 Cent, and Jadakiss keeping the sounds alive over the next decade.
