Yandy Smith, Tamika D. Mallory, Mysonne, Latoya Bond, and Jamila T. Davis have been among the hundreds of people protesting outside of Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
Mayor Bill de Blasio responded by providing generators, blankets and hand warmers to the inmates on Saturday.
New York City is sending trucks with hundreds of blankets and hand warmers to the Metropolitan Detention Center NOW and generators are being readied for transport. We've told the Federal Bureau of Prisons the supplies are coming – whether they like it or not.
Reports suggest that electricity has been restored which means the inmates are no longer locked in their cells, able to communicate with their loved ones, and eat.
The Love and Hip Hop reality star used a speaker system to communicate with the inmates. She asked if they received blankets or if their toilets were working and they responded by banging on the windows. At night, they use flash lights to signal for help.
Things escalated when Yandy and other protestors made it inside of the prison and were pepper sprayed as a result. She continued to protest afterwards and thankfully it all paid off.
Mysonne vowed that the protests will continue until the heat is on, so as far as we’re concerned the people will still be out there fighting for the voiceless.
