Ice-T Warns Artists About Making Appearances on Podcasts

f

West Coast pioneer Ice-T is adamant about his concerns about the culture’s continuously growing number of podcasts and believes that most platforms are situated to get artists caught up in their own words, which is a perfect recipe for controversy.

In a recent tweet, the legendary rapper/actor tweeted, “Artist Public Service: Doing Interviews can be risky if you Don’t know what you’re doing.” Ice then spoke on tricks used by hosts to get the viral content they’re looking for. “They will talk to you for hours hoping you say one thing they can TWIST and hype up for clicks.”

He concluded by talking about the devolving content of today’s podcasts, saying, “Unfortunately, most podcasts have now DEVOLVED to this BS. Just saying.”

T.I. Explains Why Lil’ Kim Edges Out Nicki Minaj In Hip-Hop History On ‘Expeditiously’

2019 BET Hip Hop Awards - Show

Source: Aaron J. Thornton / Getty

Lil’ Kim (who just dropped a new album) and Nicki Minaj may not be very fond of each other, but their contributions to Hip-Hop seems to have them tethered forever.

During the latest episode of his ExpediTIously podcastT.I. and the crew decided to breakdown their top 50 greatest MCs in response to Atlanta’s Trap Music Museum’s list that was released on Instagram.

As Tip and crew gathered their names, the self-proclaimed “King of the South” had only one rule, that the MCs listed had to be graded on impact to the culture and overall skills, record sales and plaques were not allowed to be a qualifying factor. As the crew begins to build their list, they all seemingly agree on the majority of artists added including placement for Andre 3000, 2Pac, Jay Z, and Biggie, but when it came to the women on the list, that where things took an argumentative turn.

While discussing the placement of Hip-Hop legend Lil’ Kim, a few of the crew members argued that Nicki Minaj would be a better fit due to her sales. T.I stated that they couldn’t both be on the list due to their similarities in style and impact. The debate was up in the air, until one of the associates at the table said, “Nicki would not be here doing the things that she is doing if Lil Kim wouldn’t did that”, which in turn shifted focus to Nicki’s album sales; but T.I. made sure to remind everyone of the rule. “[Nicki] is one of the biggest-selling artists of all time and I salute that. Impact, impact, impact,” T.I. said.

After all the arguments were heard, T.I. decided to take a more democratic approach leading to a unanimous vote in favor of Lil’ Kim, but the argument sparked T.I. to state that a completely separate list should be made just for the female MCs before ultimately allowing both women to rest on the list with Lil’ Kim having the edge at number 40 and Nicki Minaj at 41 above Fabolous.

Charlamagne Set To Host First-Ever iHeartMedia Podcast Awards

The podcast industry is finally turning into an honorable avenue thanks to iHeartMedia. At the top of 2019, the media giant will host its first-ever iHeartRadio Podcast Awards on Jan. 18 and has slated Charlamagne as historic show’s host, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The 90-minute show is set to take place in Los Angeles at iHeartRadio Theater.

The Breakfast Club host is set to co-host the event with Holly Frey of Stuff You Missed in History and country radio personality Bobby Bones while actor Mario Lopez has been recruited to host the event’s complete live stream. The array of hosts certainly reflect the wide pool of sectors the podcasting world has managed to tap into, including Hip-Hop with the presence of Charlamagne who is an undisputed personality on behalf of the culture.

“Tha God” shared and confirmed the news on Instagram deeming the upcoming experience as “fun.”

Conal Byrne, president of iHeartMedia’s podcasting division cites the award show as one that will recognize the evolution of podcasting in America.  “The iHeartRadio Podcast Awards will provide a forum to celebrate the high-caliber, creative content that has made podcasting a major new audio category — and that truly reflects America’s favorite podcasts, voted by the listeners themselves. We look forward to hosting this transformative, annual event and encouraging everyone in the podcasting industry to push the envelope and inspire even more creators in this space,” said Byrne.

There will be a total of 22 categories with 17 of them luckily giving fans the chance to vote. The winners of the five top categories will be chosen by a league to eminent figures in the podcasting arena podcast of the year, breakout podcast, best branded podcast, best social impact from podcast/host and the podcast innovator award. While little to no Hip-Hop based podcasts have been nominated, there are certainly some culturally affiliated honorable nods.

Of course, syndicated morning radio show Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club has been nominated for best multi-cultural podcast with 2 Dope Queens, The Read, Latino Rebels Radio, The Nod, and Radio Ambulante as fellow nods. Voting will take place on iHeartMedia’s website and social media starting Oct. 22 through Jan. 6.
