On this day in Hip-Hop history, Wu-Tang Clan’s Ol’ Dirty Bastard released his debut solo LP, Return of the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version. Released by Elektra Records, Return of the 36 Chambers was only the second solo LP by any Wu-Tang member. Largely produced by fellow Wu-Tang emcee RZA, the album had a mostly positive commercial reception.

Peaking at number seven on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Top R&B/Hip Hop chart, Return of the 36 Chambers sold 81,000 albums in its first week and was certified gold later that year. The album was also nominated for “Best Rap Album” at the 1996 Grammy Awards.

Coming off such a successful group debut, there were few critics could say to discount the record. The Source, Rolling Stone, and Allmusic have all given the project four out of five stars. In 1998, The Source selected the album to be a part of its 100 Best Rap Albums list.

Following Return of the 36 chambers: The Dirty Version, ODB went on to release one more solo album, Nigga Please, before his untimely demise in 2004. Ol’ Dirty will forever be remembered as one of the most talented and unique emcees to ever grace the mic.

Today in Hip Hop History: Wu-Tang Clan Dropped ‘The W’ Album 19 Years Ago

On this day in Hip Hop history Wu Tang Clan releases their third studio LP The W. As the follow up to the immensely successful Wu Tang Forever, this album fell a little short of its predecessors success but continued in growing the Wu’s legacy as a whole.

At the time of the album’s production and release, Wu Tang member ODB was facing a legal-saga with seemingly no end. Although that may have stopped Dirt Dog’s ability to grace the album more than once, it did not however derail the Clan’s creative process and ability to execute. Much to the tone of their past work, The W once again proved that Wu-Tang is lyrically the strongest rap collective of all time. As far as production however, RZA toned down the intricate instrumentation used on Forever and went back to the 36 Chambers style of soulful samples coupled with melancholic  drum patterns. This back to basic model allowed the Clan to stand out lyrically as they once did.

Commercially, the album was an international success. It peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200 as well as #1 in the UK and Ireland. The album won numerous Album of the Year awards from esteemed publications and is herald as one of Hip Hop’s greater albums.

Its been 15 years since the untimely death of Hip-Hop legend Old Dirty Bastard, and though the Wu-Tang Clan OG has been gone for more than a decade his presence still loams large on the game and with the help of his son, it will continue to do so.

According to TMZ, Young Dirty Bastard has embarked on a new venture with Circa Brewing to create a new honey ale flavored candy juice for adults dubbed Young Dirty Brew, which YDB says is a tribute to his late father as has been his dream ever since he first saw his daddy downing some of that OE (Olde English). A rep for YDB, Avery “Msartistry,” told TMZ that ODB’s namesake put up a cool $60K to get the new alcoholic beverage off the ground (not bad) and that customers should be able to get their fill just in time for the new year.

We’re told YDB and his biz partners, Divine Everlasting and Logan Feldman, took about 6 months to perfect their ale, and 100 cases go on sale New Year’s Eve in select New York liquor stores, bars and online.

Will you be getting Dirt McGirt drunk for New Years Eve? Let us know in the comments section.
