It’s happening again.

Revered fashion designer and artist Virgil Abloh is dropping another Off-White Nike collaboration which is sure to have hypebeasts and collectors cursing the sneaker gods for all the L’s taken on its release date.

The latest Nike silhouette to get the Off-White makeover is the Nike Dunk Low which will feature some extra laces draped on the sneaker’s base to go along with the ones securing the tongue of the kicks. Like his other Off-White remixes, the Dunks will also feature the Off-White stamps and signature zip tags that accompany all his releases.

Though there are three colorways of the Off-White Dunk Lows rumored to drop come October, Virgil only posted the pine green and white colorway with the pink laces on them.

Virgil Abloh made a huge splash in the fashion world with the Off-White line, but a New York company says the designer ripped them off. Offwhite Productions, which has been around since the 1990s, filed a lawsuit against Abloh over the name usage and other damages.

The Blast reports:

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, OffWhite Productions – who do business as OFFWHITE – have filed suit against Abloh’s fashion house OFF—WHITE.

OFFWHITE accuses OFF—WHITE of ripping off their trademarked name and ruining their years of hard work.

OFFWHITE is a New York-based company that, “provides wholistic creative solutions to creators of new goods and services integrating innovative marketing, advertising, and other business approaches to product and brand development.”

The outlet adds that OFFWHITE trademarked the brand name back in 2014.

All-White: Virgil Abloh’s Off-White™ Design Team Is Melanin Deficient

2019 has been a very interesting year regarding cultural inclusion within luxury fashion houses. In a very interesting turn it seems like Virgil Abloh is the only brown skin person at his company.

The Chicago native has a bit of explaining to do. As reported by Refinery 29 the esteemed designer shared photos from a recent Off-White™ staff event. The gathering was an overdue holiday party for the crew which took place in Italy. While the gesture of thanking his team for a strong fourth quarter performance was well received the lack of diversity in his crew was glaring.

In several flicks we can see wine flowing throughout the room as several White employees smile with what we assume to be gratitude to be with a winning squad. But surprisingly there is not one person of color in sight. Considering that his pricey wears are so highly sought after in urban communities the absence of any Black employees is concerning for many. Naturally the Internets called Virgil out.

According to their mission statement the brand name is said to be “the grey area between black and white as the color off-white” to the fashion world. Clearly it is leaning towards ivory side of the scale.

Off-White™ Is Suing Fashion Companies for Using Quotation Marks

Even though imitation is the most sincere form of flattery Virgil Abloh isn’t having it. The esteemed designer is going after companies that are guilty of style thievery.

Hypebeast is reporting that his fashion house is leveraging their legal muscle against other labels that have seemingly lifted their signature quotation mark branding. Since launching in 2012, Off-White™ has become one of the biggest names in the streetwear category via their punctuation around their releases including “Shoelaces” and red zip ties that accompany their footwear.

While Abloh and crew do not own the legal trademark to the quotes nor the scarlet colored straps they are citing they have attained “significant common law trademark.” In layman’s terms that means shoppers associate both features with their pricey wears. “Retailers, retail buyers, consumers and members of the public have become familiar with Off-White products and Off-White marks and associate [these things] exclusively with Off-White.”

Specifically on their legal hit list is a company called Rastaclat who is peddling goods at national retail chains under a “Off-Clat” and/or “Off-Clat c/o Rastaclat” moniker for shoelaces.

As of today Off-White™ has yet to successfully register the use of the quotes. Earlier this year Virgil himself was accused of stealing designs to which he denied that any similarities were unintentional.

Another mass market brand has jumped on the Abloh wave. The renowned designer has remixed the water bottle.

As reported by Hypebeast the Illinois native has another collaboration with everyday consumer packed goods. This time Virgil has partnered with Evian for a limited-edition bottle capsule. The result is a set of Off-White™ branded mineral waters. His signature quotes are again put to use with “RAINBOW INSIDE” branding.

Abloh detailed the initiative and an appointment at the company in a formal statement. “The notion that one drop can make a rainbow served as the inspiration and metaphor to drive my first project as Evian’s Creative Advisor for Sustainable Innovation design. As light refracts through that droplet, it reveals its full polychromatic potential. We don’t see just water, we see infinite possibilities and inspiration.”

The “One Drop Can Make A Rainbow” collection is available now on Evian’s web store here. In September 2018 Virgil reimagined Moët & Chandon’s iconic Impérial Rosé champagne bottle.

Nike Is King In The Sneaker Resale Department Per eBay Shopping Report

The sneaker resale industry is showing no signs of slowing down according to eBay’s 2018 Shopping Report revealed today and highlights trends on the e-commerce site.

Thanks to Virgil Abloh’s OFF-WHITE collaborations and Air Jordan sneakers, Nike didn’t suffer an off year.

eBay reports that in 2018 more than 40,000 pairs of sneakers are sold each day on its site with Nike and Adidas being the most popular brands being searched for by potential customers. Air Jordan moved over half a million sneakers on the site despite concerns of oversaturation in the sneaker market.

The report also revealed that a pair of Air Jordan Kobe PE sold for $20,000 on the site this year and that Virgil Abloh’s OFF-WHITE Nike Collaborations sold 38,500 pairs of sneakers on the site. Oh and as far as streetwear brands are concerned, Champion and Supreme racked up 30,000 searches a day.

Per eBay:

  • Most Popular: Nike and Adidas continue to lead the pack, with top styles driving sales of collectible sneakers in the tens of thousands. In fact, half a million Air Jordans were sold this year alone – that’s one pair every minute.
  • Grails of the Year: Taking the spot for most sought-after style this year was the Nike Air Max 1/97 Sean Wotherspoon. The most expensive pair sold in 2018 is the Nike Air Jordan Kobe PE, purchased for $20,000 – a player’s exclusive from 2002 in Kobe’s size.
  • Cash for Kicks: Collectible sneaker sales show no sign of slowing down – eBay shoppers are purchasing more than 370 pairs of sneakers over $250 every day.
  • Brand Love Wins: There was a 76% increase in eBay sales of Champion sweatshirts in the last 90 days, and collab-favorite Supreme racked up 30,000 searches per day.
  • Virgil Vision: It was a big year for the industry’s most sought-after designer – in addition to being named Director of Menswear at Louis Vuitton this year, Virgil launched multiple Off White sneaker styles and designed the Nike tutu outfit Serena Williams wore at this year’s U.S. Open. eBay sold 38,500 Off White sneakers in 2018, that’s 5 pairs per hour at an average of $289 per pair. The most expensive Off White pair sold on eBay this year was the Off-White x Air Jordan 1 “The Ten” for $3,409.

Who said the sneaker resale game was looking shaky? It seems quite profitable according to those numbers.
