NCAA Cancels March Madness Due To Coronavirus #breaking

This decision was inevitable. The NCAA has canceled the 2020 Men’s and Women’s Basketball tournaments due to the Coronavirus.

March Madness is no more. Selection Sunday was scheduled for March 15.

“Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships,” said the NCAA via a statement. “This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.”

Previously, the NCAA said it planned to continue the tournament, but only with essential personnel and family in attendance at the games.

But when the NBA suspended its season last night—thanks to Rudy Gobert being diagnosed with Coronvirus—and then with all the major NCAA sports conferences canceling their basketball tournaments today, it was only a matter of time before the Big Dance was put on ice.

March Madness is one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year. However, with the World Health Organization declaring the Coronavirus a pandemic, it’s better to err on the side of caution during this crisis.

Also worth noting, the Kansas and Duke programs said they would not be participating in the tournament prior to the NCAA even revealing its decision.

You gotta feel for the players, particularly any Seniors, who after working hard to get to this point won’t get to play during one of the most epic sports moments in the world.

Final Fade Tourney: Kansas vs. Kansas State Basketball Game Erupts Into All-Out Brawl

Kansas State v Kansas

Source: Jamie Squire / Getty

An epic fight took place Tuesday night (Jan. 21) between the Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas State Wildcats, spilling out into the crowd before cooler heads prevailed. It all happened in garbage time as the contest was winding down and sparked by a Kansas player who didn’t particularly like the fact the ball was stolen from him.

ESPN reports that the rival squads were nearing the end of their contest on Kansas’ homecourt at Allen Fieldhouse. As the Jayhawks were letting time expire on the clock by dribbling around, Kansas State player DaJuan Gordon stole the ball from Silvio De Sousa. As Gordon raced down the other end, De Sousa swatted down the shot and then stood over Gordon in a menacing fashion.

Two Kansas State players took offense to the taunting and all hell broke loose. As a result, both teams cleared their benches, including coaches and other staff and amazingly, the gameplay was halted and had to be resumed so that the Wildcats could shoot technical fouls.

Things could have been much worse, as De Sousa began brandishing a stool and held it above his head before one of the coaches took it from him. Adding to what is sure to be severe consequences for both teams, De Sousa has already been the subject of an FBI investigation after it was uncovered that the forward was allegedly given $20,000 by an adidas consultant on the suggestion of Kansas Head Coach, Bill Self.

The NCAA has not yet announced what it plans to do in response and both respective schools are launching their own investigations.

Get Paid, Young Brother: James Wiseman Leaves Memphis, Declares For The NBA Draft

Alcorn State v Memphis

The University of Memphis is now short of a player and an ongoing saga involving James Wiseman will only grow in the wake of his leaving the squad to declare for the NBA Draft. However, Wiseman’s decision to go pro isn’t without its fair share of questionable happenings in the background.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Wiseman, who played center for the Tigers squad, shared this his stated goal was always to get to the NBA and he’s doing so amid a bit of scandal of which none was his fault.

When Memphis coach Penny Hardaway was coaching high school in the city back in 2017, he paid $11,000 for Wiseman’s family to move from Nashville to Memphis. The NCAA at first let the payment slide and declared Wiseman eligible then slapped a 12-game suspension one him due to Hardaway being considered a “booster” for the Memphis Tigers, having donated to the school in 2008.

While sitting on ice, Wiseman realized that he no longer needed college basketball after realizing the NCAA maybe didn’t know what to do with him. It was quite a blow to Memphis too as many players Hardaway lured to the team was because many of them wanted to play with Wiseman.

Hiring an agent and killing all hopes of reentering the college ranks, Wiseman said all that needed to be said about his decision.

“Ever since I was a little kid, it’s been a dream of mine to play in the NBA. Throughout this process, I’ve asked God to ordain my steps and lead me in the right direction,” Wiseman wrote on Thursday.

Coach Hardaway held a press conference Friday afternoon and supports Wiseman’s in his decision, even noting that he didn’t want him to bolt for the NBA. However, Hardaway said that while the team was stunned, they still have a season to play and it shouldn’t hinge on one player.

Reporter Brad Broders captured the presser via Twitter. Check it out below along with Wiseman’s IG post.

Today I formally withdrew from the University of Memphis and I will be preparing for the next chapter of my life. Ever since I was a little kid, it’s been a dream of mine to play in the NBA. Throughout this process, I’ve asked God to ordain my steps and lead me in the right direction. God is my lord and salvation, and throughout this process he has comforted me. This was not how I expected my freshman season to be, but I’m thankful for everyone who has supported my family and me throughout this process. I want to thank the coaches and staff for all their support and my teammates for pushing me everyday at practice. I feel blessed for the opportunity to be a Tiger and for having the honor to play with these special group of guys. I can’t wait to see what all they accomplish this season. The friends and fans of Tiger Nation will always hold a place in my heart. #GoTigersGo 🐯🔵🐯

Ole Miss Basketball Players Kneel During National Anthem To Protest Local Pro-Confederate Rallies

Mississippi v Georgia

Source: Logan Riely / Getty

The Ole Miss basketball team is woke (well, some of them). Players on the squad knelt during the national anthem in protest of pro-Confederate rallies happening near their university’s campus.

Deadspin reports that K.J. Buffen, Terence Davis, Luis Rodriguez, Bruce Stevens, Devontae Shuler and Breein Tyree took a knee before the team’s home game against Georgia on Saturday (Feb. 24). A total of eight players kneeled per reports.

Reports ESPN:

Minutes before the game, both teams formed lines for the anthem. As “The Star-Spangled Banner” began, six Rebels players — who appeared to be KJ Buffen, D.C. Davis, Brian Halums, Luis Rodriguez, Devontae Shuler and Bruce Stevens — knelt one by one. Two more players — appearing to be Breein Tyree and Franco Miller Jr. — took a knee on the song’s final line.

The game was being played while two pro-Confederacy groups organized a march onto the campus in Oxford, Mississippi.

“The majority of it was we saw one of our teammates doing it and we just didn’t want him to be alone,” Ole Miss scoring leader Tyree said after his team’s 72-71 victory. “We’re just tired of these hate groups coming to our school and portraying our campus like it’s our actual university having these hate groups in our school.”

So no, they weren’t disrespecting the flag or servicemen. Star player Tyree later tweeted: “To the people that fight for this country, my teammates and I meant no disrespect to everything that you do for us, but we had to take a stand to the negative things that went on today on our campus. #WeNeedChange”

The team’s coach, Kermit Davis, was unaware the protest was going to happen, but he supported his players, as he should.

Respect.

Zion Williamson Suffers Weird On-Court Injury, Basketball Twitter Verklempt

North Carolina v Duke

Source: Streeter Lecka / Getty

Zion Williamson has become everyone’s top NBA prospect after showing true dominance as a star for the Duke University Blue Devils. However, a freak on-court injury has the basketball world in shock and could potentially derail Williamson’s career potential.

NPR reports:

It was the most highly anticipated college basketball game of the season, Duke facing arch rival North Carolina, with the spectacular talents of Duke’s freshman sensation Zion Williamson on display.

Former President Barack Obama was there. Tickets for the game were reselling for more than $3,000 — Super Bowl prices. Duke’s exuberant student fans, known as the Cameron Crazies, were extra hyped.

And then a mere 33 seconds into the game, on a routine play, Williamson dribbled near the foul line when his left leg buckled, his left blue-and-white Nike sneaker ripped apart at the seams and he tumbled to the floor, grabbing his right knee in pain.

The outlet adds that President Obama visibly mouthed the words “his shoe broke” as he looked on along with the sellout crowd. Williamson left the game with a knee sprain and along with it, so did Duke’s hopes for glory on the back of the talented freshman.

Basketball Twitter has been reacting in kind and we’ve captured some of the best reactions below.
