St. Louis, MOCHINGY, the multi-platinum rapper known for his infectious hits like “Right Thurr,” made a triumphant homecoming at the Music at the Intersection Festival, delivering an electrifying performance that resonated with fans and family alike. In addition to his performance, Chingy was honored with a proclamation from Mayor Tishaura Jones, officially declaring September 14th as “Chingy Day” in recognition of his contributions to St. Louis’ rich musical landscape.

Returning Home to Perform

Chingy, born and raised in St. Louis, expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to perform in his hometown, noting how much it means to receive such an outpouring of love from familiar faces in the crowd. “It felt great. You see the love. When you come home, it’s all these people I know in the crowd — relatives, friends, and just so many people,” he shared, acknowledging how special it was to prioritize performing in St. Louis over other commitments that night.

Reflecting on the honor of receiving the mayoral proclamation, Chingy beamed, “You can’t ask for much more coming from your own city. To be recognized like that, it’s amazing.”

Evolving Musically Over Two Decades

With over two decades in the music industry, Chingy’s sound has evolved, blending his signature party tracks with deeper, more introspective themes. His latest album, Chinglish, includes songs like “Ballen’,” which dives into spiritual wealth and self-knowledge, contrasting his earlier hits. “There’s more substance now. It’s not just about material wealth but about spiritual currency,” he explained, highlighting his personal growth as an artist.

Yet, Chingy still embraces his party vibe, showing that his musical journey has been one of balance. “I still party. I still do those types of records,” he said, showcasing his versatility on stage while giving fans a taste of new and old hits.

Prioritizing Mental Health and Growth

Mental health has become a key topic for many artists, and Chingy is no exception. Sharing insights into how he stays grounded, he revealed his commitment to physical and mental well-being. “I meditate, I work out, I do yoga and mobility training. Meditation gives me mental clarity,” Chingy said. He also emphasized the importance of continuous learning, mentioning his lesser-known academic achievements. “A lot of people don’t know I have like four or five degrees. I’ve studied everything from metaphysics to psychology,” he said, stressing the importance of expanding one’s mind and maintaining inner peace.

A Critical Look at the Industry

Chingy took the opportunity to address some pressing issues in today’s music industry, including the disparity in revenue from streaming platforms. “The artists don’t really be getting enough money,” he said, pointing out the imbalance between the billions made by executives and the small payouts artists receive. He also touched on the rise of AI in music, voicing both caution and curiosity. “AI is both a benefit and a harm. It can be used in creative ways, but it can also mess up artists’ lives,” Chingy said. He was especially critical of the use of AI to mimic the voices of deceased artists, adding, “Like that song where they put Tupac’s voice on it — that should never happen. Let people rest, let them transition.”

Supporting the Next Generation

Despite the changes in the music industry, Chingy remains optimistic about the future, particularly when it comes to new talent emerging from St. Louis. He mentioned his collaborations with local artists, including J.R. and his cousin Fast Money Nephew, and gave a special nod to rising star Sexyy Red. “I would totally do a song with Sexyy Red. She’s from the north side where I’m from, and she’s doing her thing,” Chingy said, showing his ongoing support for the next generation of artists.

Venturing into Business and Beyond

Outside of music, Chingy is expanding his brand with several entrepreneurial endeavors, including fragrances, 9/EThurr, a clothing line, and a soon-to-be-released book. His fragrance line, featuring “Catch” for men and “Caught” for women, reflects his personal style preferences. He also teased the upcoming release of his book, Conscious Creation to Manifestation, an e-book and audiobook designed to help readers reprogram their subconscious minds using affirmations.

As Chingy continues to evolve as an artist and entrepreneur, his commitment to St. Louis remains unwavering. Whether through his music, his support of up-and-coming artists, or his growing business ventures, Chingy’s influence is as strong as ever — and with a day dedicated to him in his hometown, his legacy is firmly cemented.

Janet Jackson & 50 Cent To Play Saudi Arabia Show Amid Controversy

SWITZERLAND-LIFESTYLE-MUSIC

Janet Jackson and 50 Cent have been added to the bill of an upcoming music festival in Saudi Arabia that organizations are urging artists to avoid due to gender inequality in the nation. The Jeddah World Fest invited Nicki Minaj to the event, who pulled out because of the treatment of women, and the festival has added Future to the lineup as well.

Page Six reports:

The website for the event, to take place Thursday at the King Abdullah Sports Stadium, posted photos of Jackson, 50 Cent and Future alongside previously announced performers Liam Payne and Steve Aoki.

The Human Rights Foundation and other organizations have asked artists not to perform in Saudi Arabia, where gender segregation between single men and women is enforced in many restaurants, coffee shops, public schools and universities. Other rules have loosened in the kingdom with women now allowed to drive and attend events at sports stadiums.

Representatives for Jackson, 50 Cent and Future didn’t immediately reply to emails seeking comment.

Thor Halvorssen, president of the Human Rights Foundation, sent out a statement blasting the artists who signed on for the show.

Under the rule of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia has significantly relaxed some of its stricter policies, especially that of loud music playing as several entertainers have performed there.

Detroit’s AfroFuture Fest Drops Plans To Charge White Attendees Double

AfroFuture Fest

Source: AfroFuture FEST / AfroFuture Fest

An upcoming music festival in Detroit centered on Black creatives caught some flak for charging white attendees double than what they were charging attendees of color. The organizers of AfroFuture FEST have decided to change the policy but maintains their intentions were solid.

WWJNewsradio.com reports:

Organizers of AfroFuture FEST, described as centering on Detroit’s Black Magic performers, initially promoted on Eventbrite that people-of-color tickets for the August 3rd event were $10. Non-POC tickets, referred to as “for white people,” were $20.

After an outcry, Eventbrite requested the prices be altered and now only $20 general admission tickets are listed.

The ticketing site does still, though, answer the question why ticket prices were meant to be different for white people.

“Our ticket structure was built to insure that the most marginalized communities (people of color) are provided with an equitable chance at enjoying events in their community (black Detroit),” the site says. “Affording joy and pleasure is unfortunately and pleasure is unfortunately still a privilege in our society for POC and we believe everyone should have access receiving such.

“We’ve seen too many times orgasmic events happening in Detroit and other POC populated cities and what consistently happens is people outside of the community benefiting most from affordable ticket prices because of their proximity to wealth. This cycle disproportionately displaces black and brown people from enjoying entertainment in their own communities.”

AfroFuture FEST said in other reports that the policy change came after threats of violence from the Right coupled with general critique from outside observers and at least one performer.

The founder of the festival says that the tickets sold out at the higher price rate despite the controversy.

Nicki Minaj To Perform In Saudi Arabia

Nicki Minaj is about to break more ground in the name of Hip-Hop. She has been booked for a show at the Islamic holy land.

The New York Post is reporting that the “Pills N Potions” rapper is set to perform in Saudi Arabia as the headlining act for the Jeddah World Fest. As the largest sovereign state in the Middle East, the Kingdom has laws in place forbidding alcohol and drugs. Additionally women are asked to wear abayas; a long black cloak that covers all but the hands and face in public. Naturally this booking came to many as a surprise as her hyper sexualized Rap persona doesn’t align with city’s super conservative policies.

While her fans were excited over the news, female residents raised questions about hypocrisy with flying in Nicki for a performance. “She’s going to go and shake her ass and all her songs are indecent and about sex and shaking ass and then you tell me to wear the abaya. What the hell?” one Saudi woman said.

Raed Abuzinada, Sector Development Chief of the Saudi General Entertainment Authority (GEA), revealed that the festival will also be providing opportunities for local talent. “There is a stereotype of the Kingdom all over the world, and today it is disappearing. In its place is a new picture of the Kingdom, that accepts everyone” he said in a formal statement.

Robert Quirke, President of event organizer Roqu Media International explained that Nicki is the perfect fit for a festival of this magnitude. “She is going to get a lot of attention for Jeddah in the most positive way you can imagine. She’s going to be actively on her social media, she’ll be posting right from the stage in Jeddah and at her hotel in Jeddah. Everyone is going to know that Nicki Minaj has landed in Saudi Arabia”.

Also slotted for a set is DJ Steve Aoki and British artist Liam Payne; additional artists will be announced this week. The Jeddah World Fest will take place on July 18 King Abdullah Sports Stadium. The festival is scheduled to be globally televised by MTV. You can purchase tickets here.
