Vybz Kartel Denied Bail By Supreme Court In Jamaica, Murder Charge Still Pending

JamaicanAppealCourtDeniesVybzKartel'sMotionforMurderConviction

Dancehall star Vybz Kartel and two of his three co-accused will remain behind bars after a judge rejected their attorneys’ habeas corpus application Thursday.

Supreme Court Justice Andrea Thomas ruled that in the absence of a verdict of acquittal by the Privy Council, the charge of murder remains in effect for Kartel, whose given name is Adidja Palmer, and his co-accused Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell and Andre St John.

In declaring that their present custodial status is not in breach of the constitution, Justice Thomas told a packed courtroom at the Supreme Court in downtown Kingston, “In view of the fact that their appeal is not yet determined, they should remain in custody until their appeal is concluded.

“That is until a verdict of acquittal is entered or there is a decision for a retrial,” Thomas said.

The ruling comes after an intense court battle to determine whether the state was illegally detaining Kartel and the two men. Attorney for the men, Isat Buchanan, argued in submissions that “a conviction must exist for there to be authority to detain” the men.

Meanwhile, state attorneys argued that the quashing of the convictions by the Privy Council in March did not equate to an acquittal and only reverted the men to their pretrial status with murder charges that are still “live.” The defense lawyers had on May 13 filed a writ of habeas corpus application seeking their clients’ release, arguing that there was no order by the Apex Court for the continued detention of their clients and, as such, they should be released.

The defense lawyers filed a writ of habeas corpus application on May 13 seeking their clients’ release, arguing that the Apex Court had not ordered their clients to remain in detention and that, as such, they should be released.

The Privy Council’s ruling followed an appeal made in February by lawyers representing the then-convicts, who argued various grounds, including the admissibility of telecommunication evidence, allegations of jury misconduct, and pressure on the jury to reach a verdict.

Since the ruling, the artiste has remained in prison. Shortly after, Kartel questioned the need for a retrial in his statement to Fox 5 News, saying, “I feel victorious in this very moment as the Privy Council, in their infinite wisdom, understood the assignment and remedied the situation by quashing my conviction! I am now back to being an innocent man in the eyes of the law. A grave injustice was done to me and my co-accused in the original trial… and my cries were heard in the land’s highest court.”

Baxter, who is the mother of 90s R&B child star Sammie, was allegedly shooting at random cars, hitting Collier’s car, with one of the bullets being the fatal shot. Police say that Baxter claimed that she was being followed by several unidentified people, which is what prompted her to let off the deadly shots.

An eyewitness identified Baxter as “shooting at cars and screaming expletives at random people in the area” after she was picked out of a line up. After being interviewed by detectives, Baxter noted she didn’t remember the shootings but told the police she pulled out her gun in the same area where the victim was killed. The suspect admitted to shooting the gun in the air because a woman was following her and she admitted to shooting at several other cars.

[WATCH] Details Of Pop Smoke’s Murder Told By Eyewitness

Screen Shot 2022 11 17 at 6.26.27 AM

WE tv premiered its latest docu-series, Hip Hop Homicides, which began with its first episode detailing the murder of Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke.

Amelia Rose, a woman with Smoke the night of the murder in Los Angeles in February 2020, gives a candid but horrid account of the killing.

“Pop said he was going upstairs. I’m sitting on the bed and I’m starting to take off my clothes, and he said: ‘OK, I’ll come back,’” she recalled. “He was going to the restroom and so these were his last words.”

“This moment, it was like a couple seconds and I hear the noise,” Rose continued as she described hearing a sliding glass door open into the second-story bedroom. “The guy was in the mask and his gun was like… ‘Look at me,’ you know? His eyes made me so scared. They run to the restroom. Pop screamed, ‘What?!’”

“She heard a struggle coming from the shower area and heard [Pop Smoke] screaming,” LAPD Detective Christian Carrasco testified during a court hearing last year. “[Pop Smoke] ran out of the bathroom and then she heard a loud pop and [heard] [Pop] fall to the ground. Two other individuals began to kick him.”

Four men have been charged in Pop’s murder, including the alleged killer, who was 15 years old at the time of the murder. Police claim the motive behind the attack was to steal Pop Smoke’s diamond-encrusted Rolex and Cuban link chain. They only managed to swipe his watch and later sold it for just $2,000.

Ludacris’ Manager Chaka Zulu Charged With Murder For June Shooting

Screen Shot 2022 09 18 at 10.12.49 AM

According to report from CNN, music exec and manager to rapper/actor Ludacris, Chaka Zulu, has been charged with murder in connection to a shooting in June at an Atlanta restaurant in which one person lost their life. Even though the co-founder of Luda’s Disturbing Tha Peace imprint is claiming self-defense, Atlanta Police have charged Zulu with murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and simple battery.

On Tuesday, Zulu surrendered and was booked into the Fulton County Jail. He was released the same day on $200,000 bond, according to jail records. He has been the only one charged in the crime since the shooting.

Zulu, whose given name is Ahmed Obafemi, was one of three people found by police with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of a Buckhead shopping center on Peachtree Road. One of the other men, 23-year-old Artez Jamil Benton, died from his injuries. Benton is described as a hard working young man, graduating with honors from Druid Hills High School then attended Young Harris College, recruited as a baseball player, and also received a partial academic scholarship. Benton graduated last year with his business degree. Obafemi’s attorney, Gabe Banks, claims that Zulu only fired his weapon in self defense and if he did not defend himself, he may have been the one who lost his life that night.

Banks offered a full statement this morning (September 18) about the incident and charges brought against his client:

“Mr. Chaka Zulu, a beloved son of the City of Atlanta, is disappointed in the Atlanta Police Department’s decision to bring charges against him surrounding the shooting that occurred in June 2022. A close review of all the evidence, including the surveillance footage and eyewitness interviews, reveals that Mr. Zulu was attacked and jumped from behind by a gang of at least four individuals (sadly including the decedent) and was forced to defend himself after this gang repeatedly stomped, punched and kicked him while he was on the ground in a defenseless posture. Mr. Zulu was shot in the back during the shooting and nearly lost his life, and is still recovering from the nearly fatal injuries he sustained that evening. Mr. Zulu was at his place of business that might and had every reason to defend himself. In an attempt to save his life, Mr. Zulu lawfully discharged his weapon in self-defense, a weapon that he is licensed to carry. Mr. Zulu fully cooperated with law enforcement officials and their investigation, and voluntarily turned himself in once he teared of the arrest warrants. Mr. Zulu remains confident that his name will be cleared of all charges through the judicial process. It is not lost on Mr. Zulu that someone lost his life, but had Mr. Zulu not lawfully defended himself, Mr. Zulu would have been killed that night.”

Former Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed served as a spokesman for the family after the shooting, while Zulu remained hospitalized.

“We are fortunate to report that Chaka Zulu is in stable condition and recovering,” Reed said. “The family thanks everyone for their well wishes and prayers, and asks for their privacy at this time.”

Screen Shot 2022 08 18 at 7.59.27 AM

According to several confirmed reports, the Chicago Police Department has now added a third person to the list of murder victims who allegedly died at the hands of slain Chicago rapper Dayvon “King Von” Bennett.

Reports have confirmed that Von and his cohorts had beef with a local gang known as STL (abbreviated for St. Lawrence), to which Modell McCambry was connected, and it is reported that Von fired the fatal shot that killed McCambry back in 2012. There have been several different accounts from eyewitnesses about who killed McCambry. Still, the Chicago Police Department has attributed his murder to King Von instead of the other suspect in the killing, T-Roy.

King Von and T. Roy were best friends and have both been murdered since the 2012 shooting. This case marks the second murder that’s been attributed to King Von’s name since his untimely death in November 2020.
