Kanye West Donates Over $100K to Chicago Mayoral Candidate

Kanye West is “distancing” himself from politics, but maybe he means from speaking on them? Not too long ago Ye donated over $73,000 to pay a debt to the Illinois State Board of Elections on behalf of Chicago Mayoral Candidate Amara Enyia, now he has donated an additional $126,460.

NBC Chicago reports records from the Illinois State Board of Elections to show the donation from Yeezy to Enyia, the candidate endorsed by Chance the Rapper last month. Recently, Chance and Enyia have done “pull up” campaigns across the city of Chicago, with Kanye appearing at one, silently was held on 63rd street in the city.

The initial donation was the exact amount to cover fines from not closing her campaign account after her first bid for mayor during the last campaign. A statement was issued regarding that donation.

“The $73,540 debt to the Illinois State Board of Elections has been paid in full. The Amara Enyia campaign thanks Chicago native, Kanye West, for his generous action.”

Kanye West, MAGA hat and all, didn’t exactly help himself on the political front after visiting with President Donald Trump in a bizarre exchange earlier this month. But it appears Ye is looking to change that perception after donating to the campaign of a Black woman running for mayor in his hometown of Chicago.

The Blast reports:

Ye dropped $73,540.00 into the campaign of Amara Enyia on Monday morning, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections. Enyia has been publicly backed by Chance the Rapper during her quest to become the next Mayor of Chicago, and it’s clear Chance has been speaking to Kanye.

The amount Ye donated matches up, to the penny, for a fine Enyia is facing from the Board of Elections for failing to properly file documents in relation to her 2015 campaign for Mayor. The outstanding debt needed to be satisfied by December in order for Enyia to run for office.

Noble as this gesture is, it still doesn’t mean Yeezy is invited back to the Thanksgiving table considering that hat is still in play. But perhaps the producer and designer might have some greater scheme in mind by donning the slogan-emblazoned cap.

Do remember that West claims he’s running for president in 2020, so maybe he’s soaking up game and getting the MAGA crowd behind him. Time will tell.

Chance The Rapper has thrown his customary “3” hat into the political sphere in times past and now the hometown hero is putting his support behind a mayoral candidate in Chicago‘s stacked race. Chano endorses current Austin Chamber of Commerce director Amara Enyia for the mayor’s seat.

Earlier this week, Chance appeared with Enyia at a press conference, putting his star power to positive use but Enyia will have to contend with over a dozen other candidates, some of whom have deep ties to Chicago’s political scene. In a report from WLS, Chance hopes that his endorsement will bring people out at the polls in support of Enyia.

From local outlet WLS:

“I would like to say, very narcissistically, if I back you, you have a chance, absolutely,” Chance said. “I want to work with somebody that’s about change…the one person, in my research, of this wide open race that’s views align with me would obviously be candidate Amara Enyia.”

Chance said too many people don’t vote for who they think they should, but instead who they think could win.

“Chance and I, as evidenced by his work, and my work in the city of Chicago, have a shared vision for this city,” Enyia said. “Today’s announcement is just the beginning. This is not your typical flash of the pan endorsement. Today represents a commitment.”

The election doesn’t take place until Feb. 2019, and the filing deadline for candidates to get onto the ballot is on Nov. 26 of this year.
