maticulous – “no caps” (EP Review)

maticulous is a 40 year old producer from Brooklyn, New York who originally broke out a decade ago off his eponymous debut EP & then a self-titled debut a few years later. This was followed up with The Chrome Tape in 2016 but after producing a couple albums for Justo the MC more recently, he’s dropping a sophomore EP with a jam-packed cast of MCs coming along for the ride.

“Shouts To…” by Homeboy Sandman starts off the EP with an alluring boom bap propping up those who got him out of a bind whereas “Everything” by Justo the MC & Skyzoo finds the pair putting all on the line on top of some strings. “Close Range” by J Scienide & Kev Brown takes a more soulful route getting at their competition, but then “Home Goin’” by Guilty Simpson is an airy boom bap cut detailing going to a funeral with the killers in the room.

Meanwhile on “Take Heed”, we have Breeze Brewin’ & Al Skratch coming together over a harp-laced instrumental advising to watch your surroundings just before “Bein’ This Nice” by Uptown XO & yU gets in that grimy shit talking bag. The penultimate track “Keep ‘Em High” by Beedie, Justo the MC & Rim has a more smoother vibe encouraging listeners to move with them & the closer “Survival Mode” by Ill Conscious & M.A.V. has some slick guitar melodies speaking on how it’s normal for them trying not to get killed in the hood.

Between this & the self-titled joints, I think no caps has to my favorite solo projects that maticulous has dropped so far. Some of the best beats he’s ever made pop up on here & the guests are a bit more consistent in terms of their performances.

Score: 8/10

maticulous Connects At “Close Range” With Kev Brown & J Scienide

Brooklyn-based producer maticulous delivers a soulful, funky new single, “Close Range,” featuring one of the underground’s finest duos right now, Kev Brown & J Scienide. In case you’re not keeping up, Kev & J are killing it on the collaborative tip. Just earlier this year, they dropped the damn-near flawless Stray From The Pack with heater singles like “Orange Julius Landover Mall.” And that trend continues as they team up with maticulous on this low-key slapper. “Close Range” is also another stellar example of the producer’s ability to perfectly complement his collaborators. He did exactly that on his previous single, “Home Goin’,” which featured slick storytelling from Guilty Simpson. And on “Close Range,” we get to hear Kev & J vibe along with this dust-covered instrumental. “Close Range’” is available now through your preferred digital retailer or streaming platform and is set to appear on maticulous’s compilation LP, no caps, due out Oct 01. In addition to Kev, J and Guilty, the project also includes guest appearances by Homeboy Sandman, Skyzoo, Breeze Brewin, Uptown XO, yU, and more. The album will be available on 180g red vinyl in addition to all major DSPs.

maticulous – “Home Goin’ Ft. Guilty Simpson

With his new album, no caps, due out this fall, Brooklyn-based producer maticulous gets things started with the project’s debut leak, “Home Goin’.” It’s a neck-breaking slapper featuring a dope guest appearance from Detroit’s own Guilty Simpson, who weaves a tale of a neighborhood viewing of a pimp/player’s funeral. The track is anchored by maticulous’ incredible production, which is the perfect setting for his guest to rap about what it’s like to go into a viewing service and see a cast of characters with their varying thoughts of the deceased OG. “Home Goin’” is available now through your preferred digital retailer or streaming platform. In addition to Guilty, no caps includes a strong line-up of guest appearances by Homeboy Sandman, Skyzoo, Breeze Brewin, Uptown XO, yU, and more. The album is due out Oct 01 and will be available on vinyl in addition to all major DSPs.
