When Does Disney+ Drop?: Netflix Cancels ‘The Punisher’ & ‘Jessica Jones’, Twitter Cries Foul

The honeymoon between Netflix and Marvel is definitely and officially over. The former has canceled The Punisher and Jessica Jones.

While Jessica Jones we totally get (its forthcoming third season will still air), axing The Punisher is right up there with the shock of the cancellation of Luke Cage.

But then again, it shouldn’t be a surprise with the loud rumors being that Disney will be handling all the Marvel live-action series moving forward. The Disney+ streaming service is due to launch later this year, putting them in competition with Amazon and Netflix.

“Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come,” announced Netflix via a press statement. “In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones. We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others. We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

Needless to say, Twitter is irate and maybe a bit relieved since Disney+ is on the way. However, if and when said shows return, if at all, on the new streaming service is anyone’s guess.

Also, there are contractual obligations that prevent the canceled shows from streaming elsewhere, or being renewed, for years. Seems like the fans are the losers here, for now.

‘The Punisher’ Hands Out More Fades Than A Barber In Latest Trailer

The Punisher

We’re less than 24 hours away from riding shotgun with Frank Castle on his latest violence filled adventure when Netflix debuts the 2nd season of Marvel’s The Punisher… which will likely be followed by a cancelation later on this weekend.

In the latest teaser trailer before it’s release we’re teased to a season in which Frank seems to find love only to experience the pain of loss once again while his old buddy turned enemy Billy Russo a.k.a. Jigsaw runs amok with a brand new gun toting gang. While the Punisher simply dragged his man’s face through broken glass last season, will he find it in himself to put him down for good this time around? Judging by the amount of knuckle sandwiches and sauceless shells he dishes out in the latest trailer, Russo might want to get his affairs in order.

We shall found out when The Punisher premieres on Friday (Jan. 18).

Trailer For Second Season Of ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ Is A Bloody Mess

The Punisher

The second season of Marvel’s The Punisher will be hitting the Netflix airwaves in just a week, and a new trailer showcases why Frank Castle is a very bad man. With lots of blood and violence, the story seems to focus solely on Castle and not the cast of other characters in the Marvel Netflix universe.

Deadline reports:

Today, just over one week before the second season of one of the last two Marvel series on Netflix launches, the latest trailer shows the body count has risen and the villains are more crazed than ever.

“I dream about the Punisher every night,” says one of those villains, the returning Billy Russo AKA Jigsaw in the comics and portrayed by Ben Barnes in the new look at the new season. “He thinks he has the right to judge me,” adds Castle’s former friend and betrayer who was left for near dead with his face smashed in glass last season. “I want him to feel what I felt.”

There’s sadly no Daredevil in Season 2 it seems, but, as today’s bloody and bullet strewn trailer also reveals, Giorgia Whigham and Shooter alum Josh Stewart are vibrant new additions to the Punisher family. We see Amber Rose Revah and Jason R. Moore back again too. Not seen in the new trailer are Corbin Bernsen and Annette O’Toole, who also have joined the series.

Marvel’s The Punisher hits Netflix on January 18. Peep the trailer below.

Netflix Reveals ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ Season 2 Premiere Date

Marvel's The Punisher - Production Stills - 002

Source: Netflix / Netflix

Marvel’s The Punisher is coming back even sooner than we thought. A new teaser trailer reveals a January premiere date on Netflix as well as Season 2’s villain, Jigsaw.

January 18 is when fans will get to take in a new season of Frank Castle exercising his brand of justice. In the teaser, we see Frank’s old buddy Billy Hoyle devolve into Jigsaw while our protagonist continues to wrestle with his purpose.

Eventually, Frank is seen holding and aiming a rifle, so any comic fans fearing a tamer version of the murderous vigilante need not worry.

We still feel a ways that Daredevil was canceled, though. Hopefully, the new season of Marvel’s The Punisher will help heal the wound.

Peep the announcement below. Check out more production still from the new season on the flip.
