Malik Yoba is continuing his media tour after he came out as “trans attracted” which then sparked a flurry of allegations that he once solicited underage trans sex workers. The actor, who has vehemently denied the claims, sat down for a new interview and was grilled over the allegations before angrily storming off the set.
Yoba lost his temper when Starr pressed him about recent allegations that he solicited sex from underage transgender sex workers and claimed that Starr had gone back on an agreement they’d made about the interview.
“You and I sat for four hours the other day and we decided how we were going to approach this,” the “New York Undercover” star said. “It’s a setup. I don’t like this.”
Starr’s questioning was in response to trans activist Mariah Lopez Ebony, who accused Yoba of paying her and other sex workers in the ’90s. Lopez made the allegations after Yoba came out as “trans-attracted” when promoting the National Trans Visibility March on DC.

Malik Yoba is back in the news, but this time not for long.
During a video interview with The Root, Malik Yoba sat across from the journalist and discussed his newfound call to be the voice of the Transexual community. When asked by the journalist why he decided to make the video denouncing bullying towards men who love transexual women while revealing his own love for transwomen, Yoba stated he felt obligated after growing up with them in school.
“I went to school in Manhattan, not too far from here,” Yoba said. “I went to school with all kinds of transwomen, and what people would consider now, gender fluid. I was classmates with Octavia St. Laurent before she transitioned, so I decided that it was time for me to create a video saying why is it ok that we bully each other and record it. During that time I had to reveal that I was against it because I am also attracted to transwomen.”
Although confident, Yoba seemed to be agitated as the interview continued on, often referring back to his initial response to avoid answering questions regarding the allegations that he solicited a minor transgirl for sex when she was as young as 13 years old. When directly asked, Yoba took the time to vaguely deny the allegation before comparing the whistleblow to how a person who identifies as transexual feels about life.
“I would say that the allegation is almost to be expected when you are helping oppressed people, it happened to Gandhi and I’m sure other people during the civil rights era and it makes no sense,” Yoba said. “But honestly going thru that experience I know exactly how a trans person feels regarding their sexuality.”
Things began to really go awry when the host asked Yoba about fans feeling like he used the opportunity to “cover up the allegations,” it was at that point Yoba became indignant before abruptly ending the interview.
“That’s a loaded question,” Yoba said, “We sat for four hours to discuss how this would go and you do this, man f*ck you!”
Malik Yoba, Nala Simon, David Johns and Carmen Carrera stopped by The Breakfast Club with DJ Envy, Charlamagne the god and Angela Yee to talk about issues swirling around LGBTGIA community and Yoba’s recent entry into the social and intellectual space as an ally (or member).
“Is this considered coming out?” Charlamagne tha god says to Malik Yoba as he interrupts the actor as he breaks down his position on human sexual equality and gender identity.
And without skipping a beat, Yoba says “It’s called stepping the f*ck up.” He continues, “There are a lot of Black men (and I ain’t gonna blow nobody up, but we all know who they are) that are in situations where they are friends, sometimes lovers and sometimes murderers of transwomen.”
When he says “stepping the f*ck up,” he directly is addressing Black men who tolerate the community shaming of influencers and celebrities like Mister Cee, Eddie Murphy and Teddy Pendergrass for allegedly being trans-associated (rumored to be trans-attracted) like he revealed he was last week.
Yoba identifies as a CIS heterosexual man that loves women and transwomen. What does CIS mean?
According to The Conversation, “The prefix ‘trans-‘ comes from Latin, meaning ‘across from’ or ‘on the other side of.’ In contrast, the prefix ‘cis-‘ means ‘on this side of.’ It is commonly used in chemistry and in relation to geographic features, such as in ‘cisalpine.’ [It] relates specifically to gender rather than sexuality. A person can be cisgender (often abbreviated to just cis) and have any sort of sexuality. For example, two men may both be cisgender but one straight and one gay.”
What Yoba also admits to is that he admired Reese Willoughby, a 20-year-old rapper from Philly that recently committed suicide, for being brave enough to admit he was trans-attracted and in a trans-relationship. Yoba says that he wish that he had that same courage when he was that young to admit what he was feeling all along. He further admits that when he was 16 he met the first trans-woman that peeked his curiosity. The question comes up about whether or not the trans-attraction language that he uses can feel like a fetish to members int he community. It is valid.
Angela Yee asked, “How you determine between fetish and attraction.”
Nala Simone answers, “It is about intention and impact. Fetish comes when you only want to be with this person in the dark. You only want to be with that person sexually. Instead of wanting to get to know you.” She continues, “Our community often times has this rhetoric that creates stigma for particularly men who can’t feel free enough to be their authentic selves and love inclusively. What happens is that stigma creates that fetishization.”
Simone also dismisses the narrative that men that are with, hurt and harm, transwomen have been deceived. “I don’t have to deceive anyone to come in my bedroom. It is about trust.”
Malik also admit that he posted his transaction now because there is a march on Sept. 28th and he wanted to create awareness. This seems to confirm what some have said all along, this move is not about him being free and authentic, but to promote something he is doing.
Malik Yoba is in the midst of the struggle. After revealing he’s attracted to trans people (hey, it’s 2019) and explaining himself via a struggle rap freestyle, the actor has been removed from his youth leadership role with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
The historically Black fraternity basically felt like Yoba is a bad look.
According to a memo obtained by NewsOne, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Yoba was removed from his position as spokesman for the Sigma Beta Club program, which is focused on providing mentorship to “pre-teen and teen-aged males” through social, cultural and educational enrichment. The “Empire” actor, who is an honorary member of the historic Black fraternity, was named the spokesperson earlier this year.
The memo, dated Sept. 5, was sent out to fraternity members on Thursday and said the organization’s decision to remove Yoba came after allegations were made against him by Mariah Lopez Ebony, a trans woman who claimed the actor paid her for sex when she was underage. Other women have also shared similar stories.
So it’s not that he’s cool with trans women, it’s the accusation of paying for sex, right?
Some reports claim a man’s recent death allegedly over getting bullied for dating a transgender woman sparked Yoba’s decision to come forward.
Beloved New York Undercover actor Malik Yoba has taken to social media to call out toxic masculinity and reveal he’s attracted to transgender women. The 51-year-old actor took to Instagram last week and posted a video of Maurice “Reese” Willoughby, a 20-year-old who was taunted by other men in his Philadelphia neighborhood for his relationship with his transgender girlfriend Faith. Reese soon began trending on Twitter after it was discovered he took his life. (VIBE)
Speculation has since developed on the motivation behind Yoba’s announcement.
Specifically, one woman, Mariah Lopez Ebony, took to Facebook to address Yoba following his public revelation. “For all who applaud and solute [sic] Malik Yoba for revealing he is so called ‘Trans Attracted’, understand that either because of deeper issues he has or, because of ‘society’ pushing him and others to deep, dark places, his admission to being sexually attracted to Trans women, is bound to open a Pandora’s box for him; not because the women are Trans, but because many of the Trans women he engaged in sexual exploration and exploitation with on 14th Street, Times Square and elsewhere, were minors, including myself,” Ebony wrote in a post titled, “Surviving Malik Yoba.” (The Root)
Yoba is gearing up to appear at an upcoming trans event later this month in Washington, DC.
With that in mind, the actor and activist has decided to use his knowledge and experiences to enlighten others as he and hundreds of other allies and members of the trans community march for equality. “September 27, 28, Washington DC, the trans visibility march in DC, I will be there doing my ‘Love and Trauma workshop: The Trans Experience’,” he added. “I invite you all to join.” (BET)
Malik Yobaturned heads last week after revealing that he is “trans attracted” and has endured an onslaught of comments both positive and negative. In the wake of the revelation, the veteran actor thanked fans for their support but is now facing allegations that he solicited underage trans prostitutes previously.
In an Instagram video, the Empire star reached out to his fans and checked detractors who aimed some words at his children for his choice.
“I apologize to my own children because my kids got some foul messages with folks thinking that it’s okay because you don’t understand something,” Yoba said via an Instagram video. “Just because you don’t understand something does not make it wrong or does not make people wrong. I don’t even understand all of it, but I’m willing to ask questions.”
A trans woman by the name of Mariah Lopez Ebony has since come forth to accuse the actor of soliciting her services when she was 13 and again at 16, blasting Yoba for confusing his love of trans women.
Malik Yoba told his followers on social media over the weekend that he is attracted to transgender women.
Appearing on Instagram, Yoba spoke about Maurice “Reese” Willoughby, a Philadelphia man whose story went viral online after news spread that he killed himself after being ridiculed for openly loving his transgender girlfriend Faith.
“Trans love is ok and bullying has nothing to do with masculinity or HETEROSEXUAL behavior,” Yoba shared online.
“I love all women and count myself among those who find themselves trans attracted.”
Yoba also spoke about experiencing shame and learning while being trans attracted.
“It is NOT about GENITALIA OR SEX but about attraction to the soul and humanity of an individual and often the beauty that is in the courage and conviction to live one’s truth!,” he wrote.
According to multiple reports, the Fox show that pioneered street wise drama alongside the right side of the law with a twist of Hip Hop and R&B returns to television screens after 20 years.
The 90s police show New York Undercover starred Michael DeLorenzo as “Eddie Torres” and Malik Yoba as “J. C. Williams”, two New York City undercover detectives, along with Lauren Velez, who played Lt. Nina Moreno, who was Torres’ on-again-off-again girlfriend.
New York Undercover ended in controversy 20 years ago amid cast demands for more money. Yoba was particularly vocal about the disrespect he received from Wolf, but in Hollywood, all is forgiven when people can reunite for profit.
Yoba will now play the head of the unit and the show will follow detectives Nat Gilmore and Melissa Ortiz, though casting has yet to be announced for either role. DeLorenzo’s character can’t return to the show, as he was killed off in the third season.
NYU is again produced by Dick Wolf, who oversees the Chicago Med, Fire and PD franchises, which are a ratings boon for NBC. The reboot of NYU will premiere on ABC sometime this year.
