Today In Hip-Hop History: Ma$e Dropped His Debut LP ‘Harlem World’ 27 Years Ago

On this date in Hip-Hop history, Harlem icon Ma$e released his debut album Harlem World on the Bad Boy/Arista imprint.

A millennial piece of uptown Hip Hop history post the shooting death of rap giant Big L, Harlem World helped usher in a new era of Hip Hop in Harlem. Before this release, Harlem had given birth to Doug E. Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, Kurtis Blow, and Rob Base, but had yet to see an artist with the level of conceited charm coupled with chart-topping hits to back it up that a Bad Boy-backed Ma$e had on this album.

Paving the way for groups like The Diplomats and A$AP Mob, this album was chock full of the opulent content expected from a true Harlem World representative. Along with its luxurious themes, the LP is laced with high-energy production and a star-studded cast of guest appearances from some of New York’s finest, including labelmates The LOX, DMX, Lil’ Kim, Jay-Z, Total, 112, and Busta Rhymes.

After the untimely passing of the Notorious B.I.G., this album was set up to be the debut of Diddy’s “new protege.” Although it obviously fell short of the acclaim brought by Ready to Die, commercially, this album hit the same level of success as every other Bad Boy debut. Harlem World reached the pole position across music charts, sold over 2,000,000 copies to date, and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 41st Grammy Awards.

Salute to Ma$e, Diddy and the Bad Boy fam for this piece of Hip-Hop history!

[WATCH] Mase Recalls Big L Allegedly Setting Him Up To Be Robbed

Screenshot 2024 06 27 at 10.14.34 AM

On one of the most recent episodes of Ma$e and Cam’s It Is What It Is sports podcast, the famed former Bad Boy rapper claimed that the late Lamont “Big L” Coleman set him up multiple times to be robbed.

Once both members of the same crew, Children of Da Corn, Ma$e and Cam got into sa few heated debates after the “Feel So Good” rapper accused the Diggin In The Crates member of biting some of his lyrics.

“Me and L start talking and the conversation goes super left you know. Next thing I know, I’m in The Tunnel [a nightclub] and the n***a Fat Joe comes up to me,” he explained. The two rappers see each other, but Joe decided not to do anything because he had no issue with Mase. “A couple months later, we get into it about something. I think it was over a chick or something,” he continued. He then recalled buying ice cream for the block on 139th Street in Harlem while rocking his first Rolex watch. “I get around the corner on 140th and I walk up 140th on seventh to 141st and a Spanish n***a just run outta nowhere like, ‘Give it up. I’ma kill both of y’all n****s.’”

Check out MA$e’s interview about Big L HERE

Ma$e and former NBA star God Shammgod Wells took off from the robber after Ma$e dropped the Rolex. Shortly afterward, he learned it was Big L who set him up.

Fat Joe previously discussed his side of the story during an interview with Angie Martinez on Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson in 2022. At the time, he explained that he didn’t realize the person Big L asked him for help beefing against was Mase, who he was friendly with. He admitted that Mase never trusted him afterward.

SOURCE SPORTS: MA$E Dishes on Caitlin Clark’s String of Hard Fouls

MA$E Dishes on Caitlin Clark’s String of Hard Fouls

Harlem rapper turned It Is What It Is sports podcaster MA$E has an opinion on Caitlin Clark being fouled all over the place in the early portion of her first WNBA season. He came to the defense of the star rookie and how she’s handled the treatment on the court from her opponents.

First let’s get to Clark’s take on the fouls and the criticism she’s received. In an NBC News interview, she gave her perspective. Clark is the third-most fouled player in the league. Full stop. Okay that’s a lot … Clark said “I wasn’t expecting it,” she said about a recent foul. “But I think it’s … just respond, come down, let the play do the talking. It is what it is. It’s a physical game, go make the free throw and then execute on offense.”

Fair assessment. Queue MA$E … The former Bad Boy star spoke up for Clark on his highly popular “It Is What It Is” podcast that same day – that’s media working in real time – where he gave his two cents on the treatment of female professional athletes. “They are just playing down the significance of just female sports being portrayed the right way,” he said. “If you want branding dollars, then you have to be brand appropriate. You go further when your brand is clean enough to be marketed on different platforms.”

Now get this, MA$E added more about the topic … “When it comes to Caitlin Clark, I think they are being rough with her. I heard what Monica had to say, and I kinda disagree. If someone is coming in, and they’re adding more eyes, and more marketing dollars, why would you try to not make that person a success?”

MA$E ended with this “Not that you should be helping her, but you definitely shouldn’t be trying to hurt her. It shouldn’t be over-aggression towards Caitlin, because it comes across as hating.”

What ya’ll think, does Ma$e have a point or is this all overblown?

Camron Says He And Mase Have An Album Together, But They Can’t Put It Out

Mase Takes Shots at Cam'Ron in New Song "The Oracle"

According to Dipset head honcho and It Is What It Is podcast’s Camron, claims that he and co-host Mase have an entire album together, but it is highly unlikely that the public will ever get a chance to heat the songs.

In a recent IG Live, Cam took to the social media platform saying, “Me and Ma$e got an album. He said we can’t put it out! I don’t know what it’s about. We did six-seven songs. We do the songs and then he say, ‘No.’ He goes on saying, “I don’t know what Ma$e is saving them for. But we got songs together and not together. I’m just not allowed to play them.”

Cam also claims that his longtime friend and former Bad Boy is sitting on a bunch of unreleased tracks that Cam says is “real good.”

“Ma$e got mad songs. Them shits is hot too. All Ma$e songs is hot,” he continued. “I ain’t gonna front, he got some real, real, real good songs. What he holding onto them for? I can’t answer that. I don’t know what Ma$e is holding onto these songs for. I asked him, ‘Could I play them?’ and he told me, ‘No.’ Maybe they just for him to enjoy. I hear them too though, I enjoy them. Trust me, if I could play this shit Ma$e plays for me, I would.”

As solo artists, Cam’s last project, The Lost Tapes Vol. 1, arrived in 2023 while Ma$e hasn’t released an album since 2004’s Welcome Back.

[WATCH] SOURCE SPORTS: Ma$e Says He’d Average More Points In Today’s NBA Than Most Players In The League

Screenshot 2024 03 07 at 7.28.17 AM

On the most recent episode of It Is What It Is podcast, co-host Ma$e claimed that if he played in today’s NBA, he feels “like I could play against these n-ggas.”

Making a very bold, yet possibly realistic statement as a former high school b-ball standout, the former Bad Boy artist said after speaking about Lebron dropping 40,000 points in his career, “40,000 points is a remarkable feat. I just think it’s a cupcake league, for real. I think in this league today, if I was in top shape, I could probably average about 15, 16. I’m just keeping it real,” he chuckled. The former Manhattan Center shooting guard added, “When I ain’t make it in my generation, I felt like, yeah, it was a few n-ggas that was probably better than me. This generation? I feel like I could play against these n-ggas.”

Go to the 29:00 mark of the podcast to hear Ma$e’s commentary:

Ma$e even added his former teammate and co-host Camron to the convo, saying, “I think Killa, you coulda probably played 20 years against these n-ggas today. You woulda averaged probably about 18.”

Cam replied, “In my prime? Maybe. I’d have to work on my jump shot. They didn’t let us shoot jump shots. Crazy shit it, I had a great jump shot when I stopped playing basketball. When we played basketball, coach would almost want to assassinate you if shot a jump shot. You had to go to the basket.”

Today In Hip Hop History: Cam’Ron’s ‘Confessions Of Fire’ LP Turns 25 Years Old!

Screen Shot 2023 07 21 at 12.12.59 PM

Wearing goggles, gloves, and overalls, Cam’ron stood with a sledgehammer in hand, at a foundry as he was ready to make his mark on Hip Hop. On this day 25 years ago he released his debut album Confessions of Fire.

Many had come to know him as a member of Harlem’s Children of the Corn, a group that also included Big L, Ma$e, and Cam’s cousin, Bloodshed. Following the untimely death of Bloodshed, the group disbanded and Cam’ron went solo.

Highlighted by leadoff singles “357,” “Horse & Carriage” featuring Ma$e and “Feels Good” which featured Usher, the album also saw appearances from N.O.R.E., Jermaine Dupri, and Charlie Baltimore to name a few. On this album, Cam’s mix of hardcore street appeal and pop-infused ballads would prove to be effective as the album peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart and No.2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Propelled by the Trackmasters-produced “Horse & Carriage” which reached No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100, the album would sell over 500,000 copies and achieve gold certification.

These days we have come to love him as the head of Dipset and one of the biggest style influences in the industry. However, Confessions of  Fire laid the foundation for the star Cam became.
