‘Queen of Katwe’ Actress, Nikita Pearl Waligwa, Dies At Age 15

Nikita Pearl Waligwa, a 15-year-old rising star from Uganda who was featured in Disney’s Queen of Katwe, has died.

According to published reports, the young actress passed away after a brain tumor diagnosis. Her death was announced on Sunday via Twitter by Gayaza High School, an all-girls boarding school outside the Ugandan capital of Kampala where Ms. Waligwa had been a student.

“You were a darling to many and we have lost you to a brain tumor at such a tender age,” the high school wrote.

According to local media, Walingwa was first diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2016 and the movie’s director Mira Nair organized fundraising efforts to help fund her treatment in India. She “made a recovery in 2017,” Deadline reported, but the tumor returned in 2018.

Mira Nair said goodbye on Twitter early Monday, writing: “The heart breaks to see you gone, too young, too soon.”

Although Queen of Katwe is listed as Waligwa’s only acting credit, she took audiences by storm with her amazing performance in the role. Based on the true story of chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi who learned the game at age nine and went on to compete in international competitions, Waligwa played Gloria, Mutesi’s friend, with Lupita Nyong’o taking on the role as Mutesi’s mother and David Oyelowo as her chess teacher.

Nyong’o took to Instgram to express her condolences for the young actress and her family, noting that her vibrancy really helped Waligwa stand out on set despite the fact she was battling an illness.

“It is with great sadness that I post about the passing of Nikita Waligwa, the sweet, warm, talented girl whom I worked with on the film, Queen Of Katwe,” Nyong’o wrote on Instagram. “She played Gloria with such vibrancy. In her real life she had the enormous challenge of battling brain cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and community as they come to terms with having to say goodbye so soon.”

David Oyelowo echoed Lupita’s sentiment, writing a heartfelt post of his own about the young star.

“We mourn the loss of our beautiful Nikita Pearl Waligwa,” Oyelowo wrote. “She was a ball of light in @queenofkatwemovie and in life. Her battle with a brain tumor was humbling to witness. Her light will live on. 💔#rip.”

Lupita Nyong’o Snubbed In Oscar Nominations, Twitter Points Out Other Omissions

April Reign’s #OscarsSoWhite hashtag should be especially relevant for the upcoming 92nd Academy Awards ceremony, and the snubbing of actors and actresses of color appears to be rampant yet again. Fans on Twitter are livid after Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o was passed over despite her scene-stealing role in Jordan Peele’s Us.

Many on Twitter believe that Nyong’o essentially playing the role of two characters to great effect, in a chilling horror film no less, should have merited an acknowledgment from the Academy. But there were other omissions that Twitter found glaring, including Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers, and Awkwafina in The Farewell. Fans also noted that Netflix’s Eddie Murphy-led vehicle, Dolemite Is My Name, also didn’t make that cut nor did any women directors get a nod, which got a reply from Issa Rae in her typically clever fashion after she and John Cho announced the nominees via US Weekly.

Fans are also a little taken aback that Scarlett Johansson received not one, but two nominations for her roles in Marriage Story and JoJo Rabbit, while Charlize Theron got a nod for Bombshell. There were some splashes of good news and diversity with Matthew A. Cherry and Karen Rupert Toliver’s Hair Love getting a nomination for the Animated Short Film award. The standalone Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix dominated the nominations list in a number of categories.

But the prevailing sense on Twitter is that Nyong’o, who won her lone Academy Award for her role in 12 Years A Slave, adds to a growing thought that the Academy only nominates or awards Black actors playing roles of slaves or criminals, citing Denzel Washington’s win for Training Day.

Check out the reactions below.

‘Us’ Named Best Film Of 2019 By The African-American Film Critics Association

US movie starring Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke

Jordan Peele’s horror masterpiece Us has been dubbed the best film of 2019 and we are here for it.

On Tuesday (Dec. 10) The African-American Film Critics Association announced that the cinematic thriller had won a total of three awards for Best Film, Best Actress, and Best Director. The film, which starred Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Shahidi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex, Madison Curry and Elisabeth Moss definitely raised the bar for the genre of horror and the box office agrees after the film raked in more than $255 million globally. The AAFCA notes that it was his influence in changing the face of horror that made them their first choice.

“Jordan Peele continued to raise the bar in horror specifically and film overall,” AAFCA president/co-founder Gil Robertson said in a statement to Deadline. “With ‘Us,’ he once again upended the horror genre. His centering of a Black nuclear family determined to survive in a complex storyline in a genre where Black family units have historically been unseen is extraordinary.”

This year’s win echoes Peele’s domination of the AAFCA awards, two years ago the “Last OG” creator swept up the Best Film award for his critically acclaimed horror, Get Out, which took home statues for best picture, director, screenplay and actor for star Daniel Kaluuya. His creative approach to bring Black stories and folklore to the forefront in such a groundbreaking way is another reason the AAFCA notes that solidified their choice.

”[Jordan Peele] continues to push previously set boundaries with bold storylines that bring a refreshing perspective to cinema overall and the genre specifically. The film’s $255 million global gross is yet another example that inclusive filmmaking resonates big at the box office and it also resonated critically with our members who awarded the film with our highest honors.”

The AAFCA awards announcement follows the release of the 2020 Golden Globes nominations on Monday, which faced criticism after both Us and Ava Duvarney’s Netflix series was noticeably absent. The snub, however, did not stop Us star Lupita Nyong’o from celebrating her nominations via Twitter. Nyong’o tweeted that she was “feeling the love” as she tweeted a photo of herself with Us co-star Winston Duke on set.

”Feelin’ that love for #UsMovie! Thank you, @theaafca!!”

In addition to it’s high praises of Us, the AAFCA also named its top 10 films of the year, which included “Just Mercy,” “Clemency,” “The Irishman,” “The Farewell” and “Harriet.”

The AAFCA awards will be held on Jan. 22 at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood.

Check out their full list of 2019’s Top 10 Films below.

1. “Us” (Universal Pictures)
2. “Dolemite Is My Name” (Netflix)

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon - Season 7

Lupita Nyong’o has bars. The Oscar-winning actress spit a verse as her rap alter-ego “Troublemaker” during her appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon last night (Oct. 7).

After discussing how both Jay-Z and Beyoncé have name checked her in song, Nyong’o revealed that she was “baptized” troublemaker by rapper Common. And with a bit of cajoling, and a beat from The Roots, she blessed the mic.

“Much love to the Carters/ Hov and Beyoncé/ They always big me up in a big way/ I’m a brown skin girl so that means a lot/ Hov said we made it got an Oscar for my props/ Much love to Jimmy and The Roots ‘cause they hot/ Wrote a book about self-love Sulwe’s ‘bout to drop October 15th/ On time, to come/ Better go to commercial or these bars won’t stop,” she spit.

Bars, son. We’ll point out that Fallon just “happened” to have a mic and shades at the ready.

Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira’s Series ‘Americanah’ To Debut on HBO Max

90th Academy Awards (Oscars) - Arrivals

Source: Adriana M. Barraza/WENN.com / WENN

Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira are finally seeing their dream come to fruition.

After more than five-years,Nyong’o and Gurira’s planned adaptation of the novel Americanah has received a straight-to-series order at HBO Max.

The highly-anticipated limited series based off of the novel by Chimamanda Ngozi received a 10-episode deal and is set to star Nyong’o, with Gurira writing the pilot and serving as showrunner.

Americanah has been a passion project for me since I read Chimamanda’s beautiful novel in 2013,” Nyong’o told MSNBC. “It’s a tale that is simultaneously timely and timeless. HBO Max is the perfect partner to bring this profound and celebrated story to life, and I’m thrilled that Danai will bring to the project her intelligence, wit, and understanding of the stories and the worlds of Americanah.”

The best selling novel tells the story of Ifemelu (Nyong’o), a young, beautiful, self-assured woman raised in Nigeria, who as a teenager falls in love with her classmate Obinze as they both strive to leave their military torn town and head to the west. The story really dives deep when Ifemelu reaches America and learns that despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple for the first time with what it means to be “black”.

“Through ‘Americanah,’ Chimamanda brought the African female voice into mainstream consciousness in an unprecedented way,” Gurira said. “It is intellectually incisive, indicting, yet full of humor, and riddled with humanity. She makes unheard voices familiar, universal and yet palpably specific. I am honored to bring her incredible novel to life on the screen. I’m thrilled to collaborate once again with Lupita who brings her astounding ability as a performer and producer shepherding this project, along with HBO MAX’s unbridled enthusiasm to bring this groundbreaking narrative to the TV audience.”

Gurira and Nyong’o will both executive produce, with Nyong’o producing under her Eba Productions banner.

Jordan Peele’s New Movie Has A Record Breaking Opening Weekend

Jordan Peele’s second directorial feature film opened this past weekend. Following 2017’s Get Out (which earned the 40-year-old his first Oscar for original screenplay), Us has already shattered commercial projections and set new records in the Horror genre.

According to a Variety report amid the weekend, Us achieved more than $70 million of box office in the United States. The feat surpasses last year’s A Quiet Place for the best opening weekend for an original Horror film. Notably, the work also breaks a record held by Seth MacFarlane’s 2012 movie Ted, for strongest opening by an R-rated feature. In addition to the domestic $70MM, Us raked in nearly $17 million across 47 foreign countries and territories.

Perhaps more impressive than ticket sales, Peele’s second film is one of significant profitability. Variety notes that Us was made with a $20 million budget, including marketing and distribution. It also features a respected cast including Oscar-winning Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave), Winston Duke (Black Panther), and Emmy-winning Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale). The picture follows Get Out, which boasted a production budget of less than $5 million, before earning more than $255 million at theaters globally.

Competing with the NCAA basketball tournament, Us was projected to open at $38-to-45 million. Get Out debuted with $33 million two years ago.
