Kenny ‘The Jet’ Smith Joins NBA Boycott by Leaving ‘Inside the NBA’ Set

Kenny 'The Jet' Smith Joins NBA Boycott by Leaving 'Inside the NBA' Set

One of the most outspoken sports shows in history, Inside the NBA, kept up its reputation as Kenny “The Jet” Smith joined the boycott started by NBA players as he left the set during Wednesdays show. The boycott is in protest to the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, WI.

“I think the biggest thing now, as a Black man, as a former player, I think it’s best for me to support the players and not be here tonight,” Smith said in solidarity with the players.

Earlier in the evening the Milwaukee Bucks boycotted their Game 5 NBA Playoff match-up with the Orlando Magic. The Magic would follow suit and so would the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trailblazers who were scheduled to play later in the evening.

During All-Star weekend, there is no shortage of parties and events, but there is one soirée that has become a staple during NBA’s big week, and that’s Kenny Smith’s annual all-star bash.

Unlike most parties, it’s either for the youth or for the grown folks, Kenny Smith’s All-Star Bash manages to bring in both to come together to celebrate the old school and the new. The party took place at the Morgan MFG event space on Feb.14, the same location where McDonald’s held its Beyond The Court: Panel earlier that day featuring Smith, Iman Shumpert, Lisa Joseph-Metelus and special guest Magic Johnson.

With the inspiration portion out of the way, it was time to celebrate the return of the NBA All-Star game to the windy city. NBA and WNBA legends past and present were in the building like Julius Erving, Ralph Sampson, Kenyon Martin, Dale Ellis Greg Oden, Elizabeth Cambage, Candace Parker, Tina Thompson and more. As far as Kenny’s famous friends, actor/comedian J.B. Smoove, Jadakiss, Ghostface Killah, Mr. Ed Lover, and more also came through to celebrate.

Speaking of Jadakiss, he also served as part of the entertainment, taking the stage with Brooklyn’s own, Fabolous to perform their classic bops like “Breathe,” “Make Me Better,” “We Gonna Make It” & more. At the same time, the crowd sipped Ciroc VS and enjoyed McDonald’s fries and chicken nuggets that never seemed to run out.

It was a night to remember leading into the Saturday’s 3-point and slam dunk contest that saw Aaron Gordon get robbed again. You can check out photos from the red carpet arrivals in the gallery below.

McDonald’s Black & Positively Golden campaign aims to uplift communities and inspire excellence. So it was a natural fit for the brand to link up with former pro and current NBA broadcaster and philanthropist, Kenny Smith for a number of activities around NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago, including a successful panel.

The aforementioned “Beyond The Court: Panel Discussion” was held on Friday, Feb. 14 featuring NBA pro Iman Shumpert and barrier-breaking sports agent Lisa Joseph-Metelus with Smith serving as host. The panelists dropped a number of jewels for the hundreds in attendance, focusing on the “grind” it took to become successful in their respective careers.

Joseph-Metelus is the first Black woman to represent a no. 1 NBA draft pick (Zion Williamson) and spoke on pushing through the boy’s club of NBA sports management. Shumpert spoke on being a hometown kid, having to go away to school in Atlanta to grow up as a man while sacrificing to master his craft, and eventually win an NBA championship. While Smith was asking the questions he also offered up his perspectives on life after basketball and giving back to the community, which aligned perfectly with the Black & Positively Golden campaign.

“I always want to come to a city, and when we pack up and leave there’s still an impact that I personally left,” Smith told Hip-Hop Wired before the panel. “We called [McDonald’s] and we were talking, we had no idea what was going. We were just talking about what I’m doing and what they’re doing—and then it was, ‘Man, that sounds like our Black & Positively Golden programming.’”

But the surprise of the day was the arrival of Earvin “Magic” Johnson as a special guest. The NBA legend then proceeded to unveil jewel after jewel of business insights that people usually pay consultants hundreds of thousands of dollars for. As charismatic of a speaker as he was as a player in the league, Magic explained how he made his movie theaters profitable, how he chooses where to invest and offered up encouragement to building Black wealth.

Everyone in attendance left feeling fulfilled and enlightened, so it was mission accomplished. Check out photos from the Beyond The Court: Panel Discussion below.
