Screen Shot 2021 05 27 at 7.15.25 PM

On this day in 1998, Master P’s No Limit imprint followed up their 1997 silver screen debut I’m Bout It with their sophomore effort I Got The Hook Up starring Master P and comedian AJ Johnson, who played Ezell in the cult classic flick Friday.

I got the Hook Up zeroes in on two street hustlers, Black and Blue(Master P and AJ Johnson), who sell “liberated” televisions and radios until the duo stumbles upon a shipments of cell phones, which needless to say, brings the two petty crooks more trouble than they bargain for. IGTHU also stars Tommy “Tiny” Lister Jr., Helen Martin, John Witherspoon and other members of the No Limit army including Silkk The Shocker, C-Murder, Mia X and Mystikal.

Salute to the entire Miller clan, AJ and Rest In Peace to Helen Martin, John Witherspoon and Debo(Tommy Lister Jr.)

Today in Hip-Hop History: Cult Classic Flick ‘Friday’ Premiered In Theaters 25 Years Ago

Its been 25 years since the original stoner comedy Friday lit up the theaters. The film not only grossed $28 million in the box office, it became a timeless classic.

Friday tells the story of two pals, Craig (Ice Cube) and Smokey (Chris Tucker), who are enjoying the start of their weekend while trying to avoid the neighborhood’s bully and drug dealer.

The film starred other notable Black actors like Nia Long, Bernie Mac, John Witherspoon(RIP) and more. Following the classic film’s release, Tucker became a household name and two sequels were spawned.

Witherspoon, who passed away last year, confirmed production of a Last Friday during a brief radio interview. Witherspoon celebrated the greenlight of the fourth and final installment of the Friday franchise, as many fans are after years of rumors, but not every cast member is enthusiastic.

Tucker said that Friday was a “moment in time” and was concerned if he’s too old to play out the youthful and immature antics require to fulfill the role of Smokey.

I was a young kid. I was laughing through the whole thing. I was proud of that, making myself laugh. I don’t know if I could do another one because I was so young and it was a moment in time. But we’ll see.

It will be pretty awkward to see Tucker reprise this role. However, Smokey’s character was a fan favorite in the original movie and it’ll be cool to seen him incorporated in Last Friday in some way or fashion

‘Boondocks’ Fans Want Jennifer Lewis to Portray Grand Dad’s Sister

The Boondocks is gearing up for a reboot and one thing is for certain, the series will never be the same without Grandad.

John Witherspoon portrayed the beloved character, but he was called home at the end of October at the age of 77.

Fans mourned Witherspoon and the characters he brought to life on the big and small screens, especially Grandad. However, a Twitter user came up with a solution that everyone seemingly agrees with. “Picture it: Granddad passes away in The Boondocks opening of the 5th season and the boys are sent to live with Granddad’s sister: played by Jenifer Lewis,” he wrote. “She’s the ONLY one I can think to keep that same energy.” His tweet began to circulate on social media platforms and it seemed as if the idea was widely accepted among fans.

Lewis caught wind of the tweet and it looks like she’s down to do it. “Thank you one and all. I’ll check into this,” she responded. “It would be fun. I miss my John Witherspoon. He gave us so much so much love and laughter y’all.”

Would y’all be here for this swap?

Bang Bang Bang: 10 Hilariously Memorable John Witherspoon Moments

Celebrities Visit SiriusXM Studios - August 21, 2014

Source: Robin Marchant / Getty

This morning the world woke up to the heartbreaking news that Hollywood legend and comedic icon John “Pops” Witherspoon had passed away. While many of today’s generation may not be too familiar with his illustrious career, we fondly looking back at the many moments he gave us over the decades that filled us with joy and tears of laughter.

From introducing the whole “whip that p*ssy” notion (it was the 90’s) and teaching us how to “coooordinate” in Eddie Murphy’s romance comedy classic Boomerang, to dropping gems about what being a man requires in Ice Cube’s timeless Friday, “Pops” Witherspoon constantly gave us jewels to remember and things to think about.

Here are 10 of John Witherspoon’s most memorable moments.

In Eddie Murphy’s 1992 cult classic Boomerang we weren’t just re-introduced to the timeless beauty of Halle Berry (she was still making a name for herself back then), but we were also put on to how to “cooordinate” and “whip that p*ssy” courtesy of John Witherspoon. It. Was. Everything.

Even in cartoon form you couldn’t help but visualize Mr. Witherspoon as the wisecracking grandfather you wish you had.

Even in the midst of all these voluptuous models, Pops was still able to steal the show…kinda anyway.

In the Hip-Hop classic House Party, John Witherspoon assumed the role of the disgruntled “get off my lawn” type of old man and referred to Public Enemy as “Public Enema.” It was hilarious.
