Today In Hip Hop History: Tupac Shakur Shot And Robbed In Quad Studios 24 Years Ago

It was on this day in Hip Hop history that many may argue that the legend of Thug Life and Tupac Shakur began.

On this date in 1994, rapper was headed into the building on 7th Avenue in Manhattan that houses Quad Recording Studios with his manager Freddie Moore and friend Randy “Stretch” Walker(RIP) of the Live Squad the day after deliberations for ‘Pac’s rape case. When Tupac and his crew approached the elevator, they were approached by three gunmen who demanded their money and jewelry. Moore and Walker obeyed the commands, but ‘Pac began cursing at the gunmen, resulting in him being shot five times and robbed of $40K worth of jewelry before being dragged into the elevator to safety by Walker.

Many people, including Shakur, have suspected Lil’ Cease, who called ‘Pac from the 8th floor window before he was shot, Diddy and the late Notorious B.I.G. for the hit/robbery attempt, however, that theory was denied by Cease, Diddy and B.I.G. and no proof of their involvement has ever surfaced. Others have suspected Brooklyn street legends Jacques “Haitian Jack” Agnant, James “Jimmy Henchmen” Rosemond and Walter “King Tut” Johnson of being involved in orchestrating the shooting, which hasn’t amount to much more than a great hood fable. One thing is for sure. After the shooting, the relationship between the East Coast and West Coast Hip Hop communities was never the same again.

Jimmy Henchmen Receives Two Life Sentences For Murder Of G-Unit Affiliate Lodi Mack, Henchman Speaks Out Following Sentencing

Condemned Hip Hop exec Jimmy Henchmen will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Last year, Henchman was convicted of the murder of a G-Unit affiliate, but last week, James “Jimmy Henchman” Rosemond received two consecutive life sentences for ordering a hit on one of 50 Cent’s former associates, Lowell “Lodi Mack” Fletcher in 2007.

Jimmy’s then 14 year old son was assaulted by “Lodi Mack” and fellow G-Unit associate Tony Yayo.

Rosemond ordered a hit to retaliate on Lodi weeks after his release from prison in September of 2009 although Tony Yayo and “Lodi Mack” were both convicted for the attack.

For his part in the attack on Jimmy Henchman’s son, G-Unit artist Tony Yayo only received 10 days of community service in comparison to Lodi’s two year sentence.

Following his sentencing, Rosemond wrote an open letter to AllHipHop.com to speak on his trial, the accusations and his murder conviction.

“This is America! I want to apologize to my family and my support system. Most importantly, to my son; When I asked you to intern as a 14 yr old at my office it was because I wanted you to see your father working and have a strong role model. I wanted you to look up to brown and black people in boardrooms rather than in the streets. I was proud of the work I was doing. I never thought when I sent you on that errand, you would be surrounded and assaulted by 50 Cent and four G-Unit grown men with guns for wearing a T-shirt…”

He continued on to claim systematic racism in the criminal justice system and to maintain his innocence.
