The unsolved murder of seven-year-old Jazmine Barnes is one step closer to having justice with a man getting charged in connection to her death following a drive-by shooting in Houston.
According to reports, the twenty-year-old suspect is charged with capital murder.
Authorities charged Eric Black Jr. in the death, saying it appears to be the result of mistaken identities and that the family was not the intended targets of the gunfire on Dec. 30. “All evidence gathered so far in the Jazmine Barnes Homicide case supports investigators; strong belief that she and her family were innocent victims,” the Harris County Sheriff’s Office tweeted early Sunday. In addition to Eric Black Jr., there is another suspect connected to Barnes’ death.
A second suspect could be charged, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement released just after midnight Sunday. They scheduled a 2 p.m. press conference. The charges came a few hours after the sheriff’s office announced that its investigation had “taken a new direction.” (Houston Chronicle)

This weekend, Barnes’ mom LaPorsha Washington and others held a rally in her memory.
Saturday, hundreds attended a rally outside the Walmart near the road where Jazmine was killed. “There’s going to be justice for her,” Washington told the crowd, “because there’s too many people out here looking for this man.” She said Jazmine would have celebrated her birthday next month. (CNN)
Initially, Houston police were in pursuit of a potential white male suspect in his 40’s.
Before the arrest, police had released a sketch of the suspect Thursday compiled from descriptions from Jazmine’s mother and three sisters. At the time, authorities had said it showed a white man in his 40s. (WGNTV)
