Today In Hip-Hop History: Hood Classic Flick ‘Belly’ Released in Theaters 24 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2022 11 04 at 7.58.51 AM

On this day in film history, Hype Williams’ 1998 masterpiece Belly was released in theaters. Starring New York legends Nas and DMX, Belly follows the life and times of Tommy Bunds (DMX) and Sincere (Nas). The two get by as run-of-the-mill professional criminals ducking and dodging their way to their idea of a better life. While DMX’s character is fine with continuing to stick-and-move and stack as much money as possible until it catches up with him, Nas’ role is looking to better himself and move his family ‘back to Africa’.

The film’s star-studded cast included Taral Hicks, T-Boz of TLC, Method Man, AZ, the late Louis Rankin, and Oliver “Power” Grant with cameos from Ghostface Killah and Sean Paul.

Although the movie may have been poorly received by critics across the board, this movie helped shape a generation. Hype Williams’ portrayal of this side of rap culture electrified not only those who were experiencing the themes of the film; but, it reached the millennials who were soon to take the reigns of pop culture. Films like Belly created an image that was directly emulated by the next generation of rappers. Without its influence and appeal the lifestyle led by artists like Jay-Z, Dip Set, and even A$AP Mob might have not have been as glamorized.

The film also spawned one of the greatest Hip Hop movie soundtracks of all time, featuring tracks from D’Angelo, Mya, Raekwon, N.O.R.E., Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, Wu-Tang Clan, and the film’s stars. The soundtrack peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200 and #2 Top R&B/Hip Hop chart making it one of the highest-charting Hip-Hop film soundtracks to date. The album’s sole single “Grand Finale” featuring Nas, DMX, Method Man, and Ja Rule peaked at #63 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop singles chart.

Megan Thee Stallion Tantalizes Hotties Senses With ‘Fever: Thee Movie’ Teaser

Megan Thee Stallion x Hype Williams Link Up 'Fever: Thee Movie'

The summer is going to be getting extremely hotter. Megan Thee Stallion and iconic music video director Hype Williams are teaming up to bring the hotties cinematic heat.

The “Realer” rapper is showing no signs of taking her cowboy boot off summer’s neck. Yesterday, Megan The Stallion dropped the teaser for her ‘Fever: Thee Movie’ which was directed by the widescreen king Hype Williams.  The 25-second clip gives fans a taste of what to expect from the X-rated film which seems to take its cues from 70’s blaxploitation movies is full of cameos from the likes of the Da Baby — who linked up with Meg on her next single “Cash Sh*t” — off her album Fever, Juicy J and more.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Megan Thee Stallion moment if there aren’t any booties and twerking involved for the hotties to enjoy.

Consider our senses tantalized. While no date has been revealed, Meg promises the movie is “coming soon.” Thee Stallion is having a great summer, she was named to XXL’s highly debated Freshman Class, hit Hot 97’s Summer Jam main stage, named Apple Music’s Up Next Artist and just recently made her network television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Megan’s list of accomplishments will only continue to grow.

We are definitely looking forward to this movie though, it looks like nothing but the real hot girl sh*t we have come to expect from the Texas rapper.

Schoolboy Q Celebrates The Shiny Suit Era With A Video To Get You Hype

Early this morning, ScHoolboy Q released his first solo music in nearly three years. Following 2016’s Grammy-nominated The Blank Face LP, “Numb Numb Juice” marks a loud and proud return. Groovy Q wasted no time with the visuals to the song, which clocks in at less than 2:00 in length. The single is produced by an ensemble including Hykeem Carter, DJ Fu, as well as Nez & Rio. In the video, Q pays homage to the late 1990s Hype Williams-era visuals. He offers his best recreation of The Notorious B.I.G. and Puff Daddy’s “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems” set. With the shiny red suits and the backdrop that many on social media have compared to the inside of a cheese grater, Q delivers his bars with a close associate. He raps to the camera with flare. He pauses to dance, smile, and flail his arms, just like the Bad Boy family, Missy Elliott, Will Smith, and so many others did in the late ’90s. Common & Hype Williams Release a Visually Stunning Short Film for Kingdom (Video) Other sets in the Dave Free-directed video include an elaborate mansion with a pool. In a robe, the Los Angeles, California MC dances as he lives the good life on the property. Sequences also include a glow-in-the-dark homage to Hype’s Belly feature film (and references to its characters, played by Tyler, The Creator no less). Other scenes find Q counting big bills, orchestrating martial arts on a helipad, and rolling down red paint on the highway. Early on, he also smokes up as a guest on The Joe Rogan Podcast. ScHoolboy Q is having the most fun as he ramps up for an anticipated fifth album. Back in 2016, Nas used Belly as an inspiration in the video for DJ Khaled’s “Nas Album Done.”

Hype Williams Says Jay-Z Was Considered For A Role In ‘Belly’ [Video]

One of Hip-Hop’s most iconic films Belly turned 20 this week. Hype Williams recently shared some fun facts that will make you want to revisit the gritty flick ASAP.

Over the weekend at ComplexCon, the famed director sat in a panel discussing the movie with co-stars T-Boz and Nas. As per Vibe when asked about the role of Tommy Bundy he revealed that if DMX was not secured Jay-Z was the next option.

“Back in time remember Hov didn’t pop yet. He wasn’t JAY-Z, he was Jay-Z, and if you know him, Hov is a real hustler,” Williams explained. “He comes from a real place. We were working with Def Jam and it was logical for it to be him.” Naturally, the factoid came to everyone in the crowd as a surprise including Nas. Some other interesting reveals included that all the actors were smoking real weed. Also, all the houses and cars belonged to the artists in real life.

The walk down memory lane continued as the trio discussed working on the set, their chemistry and the impact it would have on the culture two decades later. Luckily the crime drama will see new life in 2019 as Belly will be re-released to select IMAX theaters. Additionally, a new version of the soundtrack will be also curated with featuring all new artists.
