LL Cool J Nas Grand Master Flash Slick Rick and More Attend Universal Hip Hop Museum Groundbreaking

The Universal Hip Hop Museum is finally in progress and the Hip Hop Bible was in the building to exclusively cover the groundbreaking ceremony.

LL Cool J, Nas, Fat Joe, and Grandmaster Flash all spoke about their introduction to Hip Hop and reflected on the evolution of the genre, which was once considered a fad and is now the most influential musical genre in the world.

Hip Hop started off with a small party in the Bronx hosted by DJ Cool Herc, and now the culture’s heavyweights and giants will be immortalized in the very same place.

“The beat started in Africa then went to Puerto Rico and traveled through the Caribbean, and they tried to take the drum hundreds of years ago because that was our only form of communication,” Nas said. “But guess what? That drum they was trying to stop just turned out to be one piece of the science we bring to this planet.”

Fat Joe shared a sentimental story that further emphasized his point that “Blacks and Browns built Hip Hop together.

The “Lean Back” rapper revealed that his brother used to work as a crate boy for Grandmaster Flash, and that’s how his passion for rhyming was ignited.

In addition to the museum, “Bronx Point’s first phase will deliver 542 units of permanently affordable housing to the Lower Concourse neighborhood, along with approximately 2.8 acres of public open space. Additionally, the project will deliver an array of cultural and community-focused programming, including the permanent home of the Universal Hip Hop Museum, an early childhood space run by BronxWorks, and outdoor science programming run by the Billion Oyster Project,” as per the press release.

The Universal Hip Hop Museum groundbreaking ceremony was also co-hosted by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., City Council Member Diana Ayala, Mayor DeBlasio, and more city officials.

The ceremony also marked the launch of the Universal Hip Hop Museum’s capital campaign.

For years it seemed trying to get a New York cultural center dedicated to Rap would never happen. Thanks to some recent funding the Bronx Universal Hip Hop Museum is now a reality.

As reported on Complex the state of New York has announced a 3.7 million grant that will go to the construction of the project. Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement on Thursday, December 19. According to CNN the monies will not only get the complex built but also assist in stimulating the economic growth of New York City as a travel destination.

Executive Director of The Universal Hip Hop Museum Rocky Bucano detailed the opportunity in an interview with CNN. “We knew it was important because the Bronx is where hip-hop started. It’s crazy to think of how Hip-Hop which has such an influence on pop culture, advertising, politics doesn’t have a place to call home.”

While the mission for the institution is to chronicle the culture’s history Bucano states that they will also try to uplift the surrounding Bronx area. “We want to empower, inspire and engage the community,” he said. “Hip-hop has touched every aspect of modern society and it’s important for the community to know that it was created by people who looked just like them.”

Construction of the 50,000 square foot complex is set to start summer of 2020.

Hip Hop Museum in The Bronx Receives $3.5 Million Grant from City

By: Dylan Kemp

Looks like Christmas came early for the Hip Hop Museum.

On Thursday, Dec 19th, Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo announced that the state will award the Hip Hop Museum, which is still under construction, with a $3.5 million grant to further develop the state of the art exhibit.

“The grant from Governor Andrew Cuomo is a testament to the cultural and economic development importance of the Universal Hip Hop Museum to the borough of the Bronx and the state of New York,” said Rocky Bucano, Executive Director of The Universal Hip Hop Museum in a press release.

The project was set to cost $80 million and was funded by Empire State Development and was conceived in 2014 with the support of Kurtis Blow and Ice-T. Blow serves as the museum’s chairman and Ice-T founded the board of directors. In 2018, Public Enemy’s Chuck D joined on the board of directors too.

The mission of the Universal Hip Hop Museum is to preserve the history of hip hop music from the past, present, and future. There will be exhibits on MC’s, DJ’s, graffiti artists and break dancers dating back to the 1970s. “The museum is part of the renaissance of the Bronx. The Bronx is coming back,” Bucano told the New York Post. “But the museum will be of the people and for the people.”

The Universal Hip Hop Museum is set to break ground in 2020 and open in 2023 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of hip-hop culture.
