The Inner Realmz’ 6th Beat Tape “Omnipotent” Further Establishes Masta Cypher Devine & Goomson as a Top Underground Production Duo (Album Review)

The Inner Realmz are a production duo from Los Angeles, California consisting of Masta Cypher Devine & Goomson. Since the beginning of the current decade, they’ve been making waves in the west coast underground scene off their first 2 beat tapes SP 1000 and Build & Destroy followed by Low End Wizards as well as it’s sequel & Digital Chains. Goomson so happened to team up with Broke last summer for a collaborative beat tape Heavy Wreck displaying Broke’s talents behind the boards for Side A & of course Goomson on Side B except for Masta Cypher Devine doing the closer. I was however interested in their 6th beat tape since I personally found the cover art to be reminiscent of black metal music.

“Digest Culture” sets the tone of what’s to come with a 47 second spoken word intro accompanied by kicks & snares whereas “Cymatics” works in some pianos whilst keeping it dusty with the drum patterns. “Recognize Absence” mixes funk & boom bap together with a prominent flute also but after the “Therapeutics” skit, “Mighty Healthy” starts by weaving these summery guitar licks ahead of the kicks & snares coming in later on.

After the “Emulators” interlude blending spoken word & keys, “Pantheon” returns to the boom bap keeping the pianos untouched while “Neural Dust” gives off more of a hypnotically raw vibe generally. “Renowned” finishes the first half of the tape with some masterful pianism just before “Aspersion” adds the kicks & snares in the picture again that when I hear, I can’t help imagine a rainy day in Times Square or any other big city.

“Desirous” starts with a vocal intro from Guru from one of the greatest duos in the history of hip hop culture Gang Starr until we get another boom bap beat except the tone of the chords set off a somber atmosphere leading into “Radio Silence!” taking a darker, eerier turn aesthetically as the kicks & snares remain in tact. The keys on “Daily Commute” seem a tidbit peppier ahead of the downbeat/upbeat drums while “Back to Source” turns the jazz influences back up significantly.

After the “Imitators” skit, “Vesica Piscis” is another piano/boom bap crossover while “Ruggedness & Knowledge” has to be one of my favorites on the whole tape. Especially the 4-start count reminiscent of my favorite production duo of all-time The Neptunes, who unfortunately are at the opposite ends of one another over the trademark of the very name Pharrell & Chad Hugo are known as. Even the closing track “3rd Eye Spies” is a standout concluding Omnipotent aggressively.

Said it when I reviewed Stretch Money’s new EP To the West…with Love few weeks ago & I’ll say it again right now: Los Angeles will always be my 2nd homie since I myself am from Detroit & I gotta say that The Inner Realmz have a promising future as an unstoppable production duo in the underground. Each track masterfully selected and arranged jazz samples sends the brain on a mellow, trippy journey down memory lane with each hiss & crackle.

Q&A With Mojave Desert Based Veteran Hip Hop Producer GoomSon

Congratulations on your latest Beat Tape “SP 1000 Beat Tape”. What motivated you to become a producer . And how did you come up with your producer name GoomSon?

My Brothers had a pretty big influence on me at a younger age, didn’t really know what approach I wanted to take until I met my mans Masta Cypher Devine. The name came from a shroom trip when I was in the lab one night. Haha

Where are you from? And how is the underground Hip Hop scene there?

I’m from the Mojave Desert “The Dirt”, there isn’t a scene at all only time shit goes down is if we organize it.

How are you dealing with this whole nationwide lockdown due to Covid-19 Corona Virus? Has this effected your music career in any way?

I mean besides the gigs I was doing it hasn’t really affected me, I’d say it gave me the ability to bunker down and focus on a few more releases.

What was the first piece of production equipment (harware/software) you ever picked up on? And do you still have it or use it?

MPC 1000, I’ve had a bunch of different MPCs but I always go back to my thowy.

Who are you biggest underground influences?

It would have to be cats I’m currently working with, Grim Moses, Guillotine Regime, Abadon Horseman & Masta Cypher Devine.

You recently dropped a Beat Tape “SP1000 BEAT TAPE” across bandcamp! Please give us some background on that project!? Could you tell me the inspiration behind the project and artwork?

The tape we dropped was a collaboration project where Masta Cypher Devine and myself each worked on the tracks. The inspiration came between the both of us, we spent many nights on the phone really trying to create something special. As far as the artwork we both thought a mini drum machine would look fat in a norelco, it was a combo of SP 505 features laid out on a MPC 1000 hence the SP 1000.

How does social media play a role on pushing GoomSon music?

I personally only like using Instagram as a platform to post beat videos and campaigning when it comes time to drop a project. I’ve actually met a lot of dope people from around the world on that.

What are a few different moves your making for 2020 when it comes to your music career?

While the HipHop events I curated at Stone Brewing came to a hault I was able to sit down and get a couple more projects under my belt, “Build & Dismantle” Prod. By Masta Cypher Devine x Goomson, “Sureshot Demise” Prod. By Goomson, we also have a collab project with Grim Moses x Ca$ablanca in the works titled “Proof Of Concept”.

Our most popular question….What is your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?

Staying true to the roots of underground hip hop, if you’re gonna categorize yourself as such don’t fake the jax yo. Records, Tapes, Analog Gear, & a true love for the craft

Where can our BLOG audience find your music and follow you on social media?

Goomson on everything, I’m most active on IG.

Please give us some background on how you started working with Masta Cypher Devine? Are there any more projects in the works with him?

My brother brought me to his spot years ago, and hell yea we got more shit in the works

Any Shout Outs?

Shoutout to my wife, my brothers, baby Ellie, Grim Moses, Bronx, DJ Rich Rok, & my mans Masta Cypher Devine what up god!

Masta Cypher Devine x GoomSon – “SP1000 BEAT TAPE” (Review)

Masta Cypher Devine and GoomSon release a beat tape titled “SP1000 BEAT TAPE“ , From 1st glance I really didn’t know what to expect but the cover immediately gave me a golden era feel. As I began this tape with a completely open mind I was able to visually see the music come to life as it went along but the tone was set by the 1st track “Mute Group”. The golden era feel confirmed my assumptions of how this tape might sound sonically.

The small but impactful statement by Rich Rok was the lead off that gave a simple beat life, The cypher sounds is what I call this type of music, not many distractions in the instrumental made for fluidity. As we continue the cuts we find a irrie grimey sound in “Turncate” that came right out the dungeon. You can feel a NY east coast influence in the baselines. The water drops sonically give this track a spooky overtone I can hear a legend like BIG L or JOEY BADASS inside of its pockets.

DOWNLOAD FULL BEAT TAPE ON BANDCAMP.

“Sequence” was a beautiful cut, the sounds reminds me of the flutes that makeup the ancient Chinese compositions. It was like a musical love story told through beats and flutes very rememberable. “Resample” was basic formula sounds more late 80s then golden era but still rock to the Hip-Hop enthusiast across the board. “Patch Phrase” was a break from the hollow type sounds and more bass oriented thumb. Still the classic break beat that seems to be consistent throughout the whole tape but a West coast touch added just to top it off.

“Tap Tempo” was probably my fav cut on here and its because of the beautiful vocals that lead off this instrumental & the pianos used to smooth out the overall cut. “Play Loop” gave me a AZ and Big L type vibe from the beginning more so BIG L, Not the best sonic sound as it kinda gets annoying. This album is very redundant and you don’t want to get stuck in complacency. I would recommend switching up the drums and trying to make every song completely different from the others.

“Wave Edit” was a Instrumental that stood out a bit I liked the strings used to bring this story to life but again the back beat reminds me of every song on this tape.  “Fx Assign” Had a Island & Desperado type of feel to it I can see a dope manifestation from this atmosphere given to the right artist. I believe this can be an even better instrumental re approached with different drums. Check out more music and stay up to date with Masta Cypher Devine & Goomson

Rate: 6/10

Highlights: Use of Strings and Pianos

Dislikes: All Back Beats sound the same
