On this date in 1995, Steele and Tek aka Smif N Wessun of the legendary Boot Camp Clik released their debut album Dah Shinin’ on the ultra-indie imprint, Wreck Records.

This was also the sophomore effort of the Boot Camp Clik, which exposed the skills of more of the artists that were heard on Black Moon’s debut project, Enta Da Stage. Tracks such as “Cession at da Doghillee” and “Sound Bwoy Bureill” introduced members of Heltah Skeltah, the duo that included the late Sean Price, as well as the Originoo Gunn Clappaz(O.G.C.), which completed the epic Brooklyn rap collective.

With in-house production courtesy of Da Beatminerz, the Roy Ayers’ Ubiquity-Esque feel that was captured on the album’s cover can definitely be felt through the verses over the haunting tracks. Even though the album never reached gold status in terms of sales, Dah Shinin’ is undoubtedly one of the albums that define its era.

On this day in Hip Hop history, members of the New York supergroup Boot Camp Clik (BCC), Heltah Skeltah, put out its debut album, Nocturnal.

Met with critical acclaim, the album held the duo Ruck (Sean Price) and Rock as two of the strongest links in the BCC chain. Peaking at #35 on the Billboard 200 chart and #5 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop chart, Nocturnal was by far the duo’s most popular LP, gaining the entire BCC more respect and recognition in the growing New York Hip Hop scene of the mid ’90s.

The album’s lead single, “Leflaur Leflah Eshkosha” featuring OGC made chart appearances in the US and Europe peaking at #75 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Salute to Rockness, the entire Duck Down, the whole Boot Camp Clik and a special RIP salute to the one and only Sean Price! Thanks for this timeless piece of Hip Hop history!

Today In Hip Hop History: The Source Magazine Remembers Boot Camp Clik’s Sean Price 5 Years Later

seanprice

The Hip Hop community will never forget the feeling that permeated the atmosphere the morning that everyone woke up to find out that Sean Price aka Hussain Sayyid aka Ruck of the famed Boot Camp Clik duo Heltah Skeltah passed away in his sleep on this date five years ago.

His death sent shock waves throughout Hip Hop, especially in NYC and Brooklyn to be specific. The native Brownsvillian was loved and respected in his community, whether it was for his penchant for spitting fire verses, his Comedy Central-esque shenanigans or just being one of the few examples of a responsible family man in the hood.

P left behind a myriad of solo studio work, including Mic Tyson and the critically acclaimed, yet posthumous release, Songs In The Key Of Price, in which his scheduled album release party at NYC’s SOBs ironically was turned into a memorial show.

Rest In Peace to Sean P. and condolences to his wife Bernadette and their children from the entire Mind Squad. Supreme salute to the entire Boot Camp Clik for holding down their comrade and his legacy.

Smif-n-Wessun Take Boot Camp To South Beach In A Perfect Video For Summer

Back in February, Ambrosia For Heads premiered Smif-n-Wessun’s “Ocean Drive” as a part of the Boot Camp Clik duo’s latest album, The All. As Heads would later learn, the Duck Down Music release was one of SnW’s best works to date. Now the Brooklyn, New Yorkers are treating fans to the visual version of the Rapsody and Musiq Soulchild-assisted cut. The video is pretty on the nose, but composed of some beautiful shots of Tek, General Steele and Musiq pushing a drop-top white BMW down the famed South Beach, Miami drag. With an LP released during a frigid winter in New York and other northern places, this is just the right kind of vibe for the beginning of swimming pool and beach season. Smif-N-Wessun Discuss Giving 25 Years Of Their All To Hip-Hop (Video) Although Rapsody and her verse are not in the video, but it takes nothing away from the track’s conceptual escape to beautiful weather and luxury living. The mood is largely made possible by a feel-good beat courtesy of The Soul Council’s Khrysis. Toward the end, the trio is stopped by law enforcement who are star struck once they find out who they have been stopped. Even as 25-year Rap O.G.’s, Smoke and Steele are not above everyday problems facing all too many. However, once everything checks out, the Brooklyn duo and Philadelphia singer pull off into the sunset. The All was released in February and features appearances from Rick Ross and Raekwon outside of those on “Ocean Drive.” It is entirely produced by 9th Wonder and The Soul Council. Outside of its streaming availability, Duck Down Records is offering “The All” bundle packs consisting of The All digital LP, vinyl, CD, hoodie, T-shirt, beanie, sticker pack and Smif-n-Wessun & Champion Sound Live From Prague digi-album.
