Today In Hip Hop History: Slick Rick’s Debut Album ‘The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick’ Turns 30 Years Old!

On this date three decades ago, Hip Hop’s greatest storyteller Slick Rick dropped his debut LP The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick on the Def Jam imprint.

MC Ricky D came on the scene with the “Original Human Beat Box” Doug E. Fresh in 1985 with the party anthem “The Show” and the X-rated flip side “La Di Da Di”. His highly anticipated debut LP is one of Hip Hop’s iconic projects that presented a concept, maintained a tempo with timeless lyrics and unforgettable beats courtesy of The Bomb Squad and Rick himself.

Being one of the few albums in the history of The Source that received the coveted Five Mics, it’s hard to pinpoint just a handful tracks that made the album stand out, however, there are some all-time favorites that still ring relevant three decades later. Storytelling tracks like “The Moment I Feared”, “Treat Her Like A Prostitute” and “Indian Girl” were reminiscent of his La Di Da Di days of X-rated rap. Rick served up some classic songs that are still bangin’ in the clubs to this day, including “Children’s Story”, “Mona Lisa” and the epic “Young World”.

Salute The Ruler, his DJ Vance Wright, Rick Rubin, The Bomb Squad and the entire Def Jam squad from the hey day for this timeless classic!

2 Chainz Says Get Ready-Ready: “I’m About To Make A Huge Announcement”

Def Jam rapper 2 Chainz has something really, really, really big going down. The hip-hop veteran has teased fans about gearing up for a big announcement.

Deuce jumped on Instagram this weekend to hype up major news getting unveiled in the coming days.

A few days ago, Chainz hinted at having new music coming together with Florida rapper Kodak Black.

Over the summer, Deuce shared some in-studio vibes across his social media pages.

Days prior, the Atlanta native stepped forward to address his Twitter page getting hacked.

“So to let you know, I don’t be paying no attention to you f*cks. I guess somebody hijacked or whatever. I didn’t know you still did that, take people’s social media stuff and act like those people and say lame d*ck sh*t. I want to say so many things right now but I don’t want to offend this sensitive society. So, I’m just gonna let that be that. I’m sure by now you guys know what I will say, do and condone and what I won’t say, do or condone. As far as you people who have nothing else to do with your time, that sh*t don’t bother me at all. Hack it again. Like Snoop say, you funky dog head b*tch you.”

I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway. So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! 🗳😃🌈

Diddy, Nas, JAY-Z, Beyoncé, Pharrell & More Flex Black Excellence In Must-See Pic

Nas

New York rap mogul Diddy, Nas, JAY-Z, Beyoncé and more have social media’s attention. The group recently linked up for an incredible black excellence moment.

On Friday, iconic record label Def Jam shared the must-see pic across social media.

Last summer, Diddy shared his frustrations with the lack of industry execs not investing in black enterprises.

“You have these record companies that are making so much money off our culture, our art form, but they’re not investing or even believing in us,” says Combs of hip-hop’s commercial dominance, especially through streaming. “For all the billions of dollars that these black executives have been able to make them, [there’s still hesitation] to put them in the top-level positions. They’ll go and they’ll recruit cats from overseas,” he continues. “It makes sense to give [executives of color] a chance and embrace the evolution, instead of it being that we can only make it to president, senior VP. … There’s no black CEO of a major record company. That’s just as bad as the fact that there are no [black] majority owners in the NFL. That’s what really motivates me.” (Variety)

Diddy also referenced the massive results which come from black-owned ideas and rollouts.

“We only get 5% of the venture capital invested in things that are black owned — black-owned businesses, black-owned ideas, black-owned IP,” he says. “You can’t do anything without that money, without resources. But when we do get the resources, we over-deliver. When Adidas invests in Kanye and it’s done properly, you have the right results. When Live Nation invests in artists and puts them in arenas the same way U2 would be, you have the right results. ‘Black Panther,’ ‘Black-ish,’ fashion; it’s all about access. If you’re blocked out of the resources, you can’t compete. And that’s my whole thing — to be able to come and compete.” (Variety)

In a past GQ interview, Diddy revealed his plans to launch a new app with rap icon JAY-Z to help people locate black-owned operations.

He said he wants to develop an app that will allow users to look at a given city or neighborhood and see where the black-owned and black-friendly businesses are. He didn’t want to say too much about the app. It wasn’t finished. He didn’t have a name for it yet. “This is not about taking away from any other community,” he said. “We’ll still go to Chinatown. We’ll still buy Gucci!” He laughed. “But the application will make it possible for us to have an economic community. It’s about blacks gaining economic power.” He and Jay-Z have been talking about this, he said, about moving the race forward actively, by means of: making a lot of money and putting it back into the community.
