In the early days of Def Jam, there were only a handful of groups managed by then founder and owner Rick Rubin and the Beastie Boys were one of those initial Def Jam groups. One of the first solo artists on the label, a teenager at the time who called himself LL Cool J, was actually scouted by the Beastie Boys’ Ad Rock, who tells the story in an exclusive interview of how he brought James Todd Smith to Rick Rubin in 1984.

Ad Rock, whose real name is Adam Horovitz, claims that he made the beat for LL’s 1985 seminal hit “I Need A Beat” on an 808 drum machine that he’d just purchased with his last $250. Rock said he was stuck between choosing a guitar or the drum machine, but the burgeoning Hip Hop legend chose the latter, which was instrumental in the spawning of the production of the Beastie Boys’ debut album License To Ill in 1986.

DJ Khaled Enters Exclusive Partnership with Def Jam, Named Global Creative Consultant

DJ Khaled Enters Exclusive Partnership with Def Jam, Named Global Creative Consultant

DJ Khaled announced an exclusive agreement with Def Jam Recordings for his We The Best label endeavor, as well as his future releases as a multi-platinum recording artist, at a press conference in his hometown of Miami today.

Khaled, who has amassed global sales of over 20 million singles and 6 million albums in addition to 4 billion-plus streams in his celebrated career as an artist, producer, DJ, and curator, will also join the Universal Music Group in an executive role, serving as Global Creative Consultant to Def Jam and UMG’s family of artists worldwide.

This momentous revelation marks a homecoming for DJ Khaled, who joined the label as an executive A&R in 2008, generating successes for key stars such as Rick Ross and others.

“This new chapter marks a special time for me,” said DJ Khaled. “The energy at this point in my career is at an all-time high and I’m grateful to Sir Lucian Grainge for allowing me to join his empire at this stage in my journey.  Together, we will achieve even greater heights and take it to the next level. I feel blessed and so inspired with renewed energy. I’m excited to not only partner, but to come back home to Def Jam. Tunji Balogun is not only an extraordinary A&R, but a true music-man and visionary who continuously is responsible for introducing the world to some of its next greatest superstars.  I’m excited to join my sister and visionary executive LaTrice Burnette once again, as we have had tremendous success on every single project we have collaborated on in the past. Def Jam is the culture and together we will make history yet once again.”

Sir Lucian Grainge, UMG’s Chairman and CEO, said, “DJ Khaled is a great artist, hitmaker, mentor and cultural innovator. It gives me great pleasure to welcome him home to UMG where we look forward to working together to amplify his brilliant creative instincts and unique vision.”

“Beyond a proven hitmaker, incredible producer, undeniable artist, and consummate showman, DJ Khaled occupies the rarified air of cultural icon,” said Tunji Balogun, Chairman and CEO of Def Jam Recordings. “His uncanny ability to continuously have his finger on the pulse of the culture, to reach audiences all over the world in innovative yet authentic ways, and his remarkable savvy for marketing, promoting and eventizing everything he touches is absolutely second to none. We are thrilled to partner with DJ Khaled and We The Best, both as a multi-platinum, award-winning artist and as a valued executive. Without a doubt, Khaled can only make us better.”

DJ Khaled has been a dear friend and close collaborator of mine for over a decade,” said LaTrice Burnette, Executive Vice President, Def Jam Recordings/President, 4th & Broadway. “Throughout our years together at Epic, Khaled and I developed a special working bond and broke barriers through a united vision, focused partnership and hard work. I have a tremendous respect for Khaled’s artistry, creativity, work ethic, marketing savvy, and boundless positive energy. I’m thrilled to welcome him back home to Def Jam, and can’t wait to see what we cook up next.”

In acknowledgment of his continued community service, DJ Khaled was awarded both the key to the City of Miami and the key to Miami Beach. By proclamation, February 9th is officially designated as “WE THE BEST” day in Miami, and November 26th as “KHALED KHALED” day in Miami Beach.

Logic to Def Jam: “Why You F**king Up My Releases?

Logic Says Def Jam is Refusing to Pay Lil Wayne for Feature Verse

Logic just dropped off a new single but he doesn’t seem pleased with how Def Jam is operating. The rapper called out the label but says the label’s CEO Tunji Balogun is not at fault in a video on social media.

“Def Jam, why you fucking up my releases, man?” Logic opened. “First of all, I love you Tunji. Tunji’s my guy, he ain’t got nothing to do with this. What the fuck is going on? I told Def Jam that I wanted to release my shit as a two-pack and I just found out that they’re releasing it as two singles at the same time. What kind of shit is that?”

Logic pulled back the curtain and revealed that his music videos were delayed in an effort to not upset partners. Logic would fire back at that as well. “I don’t give a fuck about none of that shit. I care about my fans, man. I care about hip-hop. I are about music.”

You can hear it from him below.

Snoop Dogg Reveals How He Secured Benny the Butcher for Def Jam

snoop dogg

Back in November, Benny the Butcher signed to Def Jam Records. That deal was brokered by Snoop Dogg, who is the reigning executive consultant for the iconic label. Speaking with Elliott Wilson, Snoop revealed he helped Benny’s deal go through after the label allegedly low-balled him.

“I said, ‘Lowballed you? They don’t know who you is?’” said Snoop, according to Complex. “I’m going to call the boss. You’re going to tell the boss what you want, and he’s going to give you what you want and you’re going to sign.”

Snoop would also reveal that he is there to support the artist, beyond being an executive. “I’m going to always pattern it for the artist. Especially Hip Hop artists. You never know what you’re worth until you overcharge. That’s what we need to know. A lot of times, we be scared. I go in and overcharge.”

When Benny first signed, fans expressed concern for his decision and Benny set the record straight.

“You niggas who be in my DMs, who be in my comments sayin’ like, ‘Yo, don’t let Def Jam do this’ or ‘Don’t let Def Jam do that.’ What y’all on?” Benny said on Instagram. “What, you think a nigga work this hard and was this self-made for this long to get somewhere and let somebody tell me, ‘You know what, you can’t do it like this no more, you gotta do it like this.

“Y’all gotta use y’all fuckin’ brains before y’all start thinkin’ shit like that. I’m a boss.”

Snoop Dogg had a conversation on The Joe Rogan Experience on Friday, November 12th and revealed he signed Benny to the longtime label.

“I’m on Def Jam Records right,” Snoop said. “I’m a creative consultant executive, and just to let you know that it don’t exist no more, I’m going to announce on your show that I just signed Benny The Butcher, and he is one of the hardest rappers up out of Buffalo, New York. So that’s showing that there are no more lines to be crossed. We are doing what we’re supposed to be doing. The butcher’s coming.”

Benny The Butcher later confirmed the news on Instagram with a photo of himself signing the contract.

His Caption Read: “A Buffalo n***a the new face of The Legendary @defjam,” he wrote. “signed my major deal finally this for DJ Shay. Griselda x B$F this is BIG…Huge Buffalo we did it again gotta thank @chace_infinite @1978hiphop @hank & Hov of course and the whole @rocnation my Family @westsidegunn @whoisconway @griseldarecords.”

Today In Hip Hop History: Irv And Chris Gotti Beat The Feds 16 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2021 12 02 at 4.46.05 PM

Even with a 98% conviction rate, the federal government was no match for Irv Gotti and the Murder Inc. crew.

On this date in 2005, the U.S. government exonerated Irv and Chris Gotti along with their Murder Inc. after a two-year-long case in which the Lorenzo brothers were forced to prove that their successful, multi-million dollar record label was not a money-laundering operation for Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff of Queens’ legendary Supreme Team.

Even with multi-platinum artists such as Ja Rule, Ashanti and Lil’ Mo, the Def Jam subsidiary was still questioned about their affiliation with McGriff after Gotti funded a movie directed by the Supreme Team leader entitled Crime Partners, which was inspired by the infamous novel by famed author Donald Goines.

Following the January 2003 raid on the Murder Inc. offices, things for the crew were never the same. Gotti spent upwards of $10 million in legal fees fighting the government, the label had no distribution during the entire trial and the war with a rival rapper from Jamaica, Queen named 50 Cent had just begun. Nevertheless, the crew dropped the Murder moniker, never waived the white flag and stood tall against the government until they were victorious. Salute!

Ariana Grande Confirms She Does Not Appear on ‘Donda’

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande is not on Kanye West’s album Donda.

Shortly after Kanye West released “Donda” fans started to speculate that Grande provided backup vocals on the title track and “Believe What I Say.”

Grande took to her Instagram stories to celebrate the artist who is actually on the song. Grande shared one of Stalone’s posts about working on Donda.

She told her that she sounds beautiful on the album.

“Vocals under MB Stadium in #atl before the start of #DONDA 2…The entire album is a masterpiece. I’m so grateful,” Stalone shared on her own Instagram post.

She also tweeted the song’s credits and told fans how flattered she was that her vocals were compared to Grande’s.

This news arrives after Kanye West claims that Universal Music Group released the album without his consent. Ye Shared in an Instagram post Sunday.

“UNIVERSAL PUT MY ALBUM OUT WITHOUT MY APPROVAL AND THEY BLOCKED JAIL 2 FROM BEING ON THE ALBUM.”

According to Variety, representatives for Universal had no comment on the allegation, but sources at the company called it “preposterous.” Def Jam sent a press release announcing the arrival of Donda at around 8:15 a.m. Sunday morning.

So many unanswered questions. Is Kanye cap for calling out his label?
