Dee Barnes calls Dr. Dre An ‘Abuser’ After He’s Honored At Grammys

Screen Shot 2023 02 09 at 11.27.12 PM

It looks like Dee Barnes isn’t too thrilled about Dr. Dre being honored with the Global Impact Award at this year’s Grammys. The acclaimed journalist claims she was attacked by Dr. Dre back in 1991, during the time when she hosted Pump It Up! — a weekly hip-hop show that chronicled the growth of hip-hop into the art form it is today.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Barnes called out the Recording Academy in their decision in honoring Dre.

“Everybody wants to separate the art from the artist, and sometimes that’s just not possible,” she states. “Most people without a knowledge of [Dr. Dre’s] history are going to say, ‘Oh, he must deserve that. He must be such a great person for them to put an award in his name.’ But they named this award after an abuser.”

Barnes alleged Dr. Dre assaulted her at a record release party in Hollywood, following an episode of Pump It Up! that highlighted the tension between Dr. Dre’s N.W.A. and Ice Cube, who exited the group in 1989. While Barnes gives him the benefit of the doubt about the person he is now, she makes it very clear she isn’t happy.

“It wasn’t just a one or two-time thing; these are choices. The first time, it’s maybe a mistake. The second time, okay. The third time, it’s a choice. I’m not saying he is the same person now, though. I don’t know. I’m not around him anymore. I haven’t talked to him. But to name an award after someone with that type of history in the music industry, you might as well call it the Ike Turner Award.”

Barnes also brought up Dr. Dre’s own statements from The Defiant One’s documentary, where he says she’s a “blemish” on who he is as a man.

“Well, what do you do with a blemish?” she asks. “There’s a whole industry created—skincare lines and vitamins and rituals—to get rid of blemishes,” she continued. “And, in a sense, there’s a whole network to keep me hidden.”

It’s not only the Grammys where Barnes feels some type of way, it’s the Hip-Hop culture as a whole. While she had a great run in the 90s, she feels her image and brand have been tarnished because of the instances.

“I shouldn’t have to suffer by not being able to exist in a space and in a culture that not only did I grow up in but that I contributed to in a major way. Is this about his feelings? Is this about his legacy? Or is it about ego and toxic masculinity? What is it about? My whole history has been erased: as an artist, as a music journalist, and as a television host.”

To conclude, she brought up the missed opportunity that could have transpired, if she was able to sit down with Dr. Dre on camera and talk through their differences.

“I think that would’ve begun a journey of healing; he’s coming face to face with me, and I’m coming face to face with him. I’ve put out the olive branch. Black women and grace, you know how we are. It wasn’t accepted.”

Dee Barnes On Dr. Dre’s Grammys Honor: ‘They Named This Award After An Abuser’

Screen Shot 2023 02 09 at 11.27.12 PM

Days after the Recording Industry honored West Coast Hip Hop pioneer Dr. Dre, former host of Fox’s Pump It Up, Dee Barnes, condemns the Grammys’ choice to honor Dr.Dre.

Barnes slammed the decision to honor the N.W.A. co-founder with the inaugural “Dr. Dre Global Impact Award” at the Black Music Collective honors ceremony. Barnes spoke to Rolling Stone about the decision saying, “Everybody wants to separate the art from the artist, and sometimes that’s just not possible…They named this award after an abuser.”

She continued, “It wasn’t just a one or two-time thing; these are choices. The first time, it’s maybe a mistake. The second time, okay. The third time, it’s a choice. I’m not saying he is the same person now, though. I don’t know. I’m not around him anymore. I haven’t talked to him.” She even said, “They might as well call [the honor] the ‘Ike Turner Award.’”

Barnes’ gripe comes from an alleged assault by Dr. Dre on Jan. 27, 1991 when Dre encountered Barnes at a record release party in Hollywood. According to Barnes, he picked her up by her hair and “began slamming her head and the right side of her body repeatedly against a brick wall near the stairway” as his bodyguard held off the crowd with a gun. After Dre tried to throw her down the stairs and failed, he began kicking her in the ribs and hands. She escaped and ran into the women’s restroom.

Dre pleaded no contest to the assault. He was fined $2,500, placed on two years probation, and ordered to perform 240 hours of community service and produce an anti-violence public service announcement. The lawsuit was settled out of court.

Today In Hip Hop History: Dr. Dre Assaults Dee Barnes in Hollywood Club 31 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2022 01 27 at 9.08.26 AM

Before Dr. Dre was a billionaire music legend, he was the producer and founder of “America’s Most Dangerous Group”, committing one of the most malicious acts in Hip Hop during its Golden Era.

On this date in 1991, the host of Hip Hop video show Pump It Up Dee Barnes was attacked by the N.W.A. producer at a Bytches With Problems release party at the Po Na Na Souk Club in Hollywood.

According to the rumor mill, Dre brutally attacked the petite pundit because of two separate interviews that aired together in the same segment on Pump It Up with Ice Cube and N.W.A. Barnes says it was the producer’s idea to put the two beefing artists’ interviews together, but Dre wasn’t trying to hear any of that.

According to Dee,

“He picked me up by my hair and my ear and smashed my face and body into the wall…next thing I know, I’m down on the ground and he’s kicking me in the ribs and stomping on my fingers. I ran into the women’s bathroom to hide, but he burst through the door and started bashing me in the back of the head.”

Promoter Doug Young tried to step i nan defend Barnes, but Dre’s bodyguard pistol-whipped Young, knocking out two of his teeth.

Barely a year before the advent of the #MeToo movement, which neutralized several high-profile male celebrities for malicious behavior against women, the Apple Music mogul apologized to Barnes in the Defiant Ones documentary.

Dee Barnes has never shied away from speaking about the physical abuse she suffered at the hands of Dr. Dre, but she decided to be mum when asked to elaborate on another violent incident. The veteran journalist was a guest on The Wendy Williams Show with the host asking if the producer and mogul ever sexually assaulted, with Barnes electing to dodge the question.

Page Six reports:

While recalling the now-infamous 1991 fight between her and Dre at a Def Jam Records party, Barnes described Dre following her into a bathroom while physically assaulting her. Williams then asked if Dre also sexually assaulted her.

Taking a long pause, a teary-eyed Barnes responded, “I’m not comfortable talking about everything right now.”

“Your silence is speaking volumes,” a shocked Williams responded. “Dammit, man.”

Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, was charged with assault and battery after Barnes pressed charges. He pleaded no contest.

He was fined $2,500 and sentenced to two years probation and community service. She also filed a $22 million lawsuit against Dre, which was settled out of court in 1993.

Barnes recently revealed she became homeless after freelance gigs began to fizzle, and she’s since launched a GoFundMe to secure housing for her and her daughters.

Dee Barnes Reveals She is Homeless and is Calling for Help

Dee Barnes was at the top of the world in 1989 when she became the first female Hip Hop reporter to host a broadcast TV show, and now she’s homeless.

The former Pump It Up! host launched a GoFundMe campaign this month asking fans to help her raise $5,000. “Right now, I am officially homeless. My goal with the campaign is to regain stability, which is imperative for survivors of any trauma,” she told the website HipHopDX in an interview this week.

Barnes explained she decided to launch the campaign because of the quote: “You can overcome anything in life, but you must first be willing to live in your truth.”

“I had never asked for public help before, but I then remembered a long time ago while I was going through the assault trial in 1991 people were sending me checks for my legal fees. I never cashed any of them — not one — but knowing I had that support kept me strong enough to continue to face each court date.”

Former ‘Pump It Up!’ Host Dee Barnes Is Now Homeless, Starts GoFundMe

Life has come at Dee Barnes very fast. The golden era media personality is now in serious need of financial help.

According to a report by HipHopDX, the former Pump It Up! host is now homeless. Apparently, her promising on-air career was derailed in more ways than one by Dr. Dre in 1991 the then N.W.A. member assaulted her at a record release party for what he perceived to be favoring then rival Ice Cube in an interview.

The incident caused her to be at court more than she was in front of the camera which made her role gradually diminish on the show. She would allege that her lawsuit would eventually get her blackballed from the recording industry.

Almost 30 years later Dee is now claiming to be homeless. She has recently launched a GoFundMe campaign; Barnes detailed her plight on the landing page.

“Standing in our own truth not the definitions or the expectations is powerful, and this is my TRUTH…Yes, I did post the link to my PayPal, CashApp and GooglePay accounts asking for help because I am in the process of being evicted. This page was created as an emergency fund to stop the process and the subsequent legal fees. Even though I am facing extreme financial hardship, I keep my head up. I know who I am, I know my worth and I know I’m not alone. Everyone is dealing with their own different struggles. Some of us less fortunate than others. It may sound cliche but things will turn around in your favor, this is the balance of life ups and downs, so stay strong, and count your blessings, not your problems. I have the sincerest gratitude for your help and thank everyone for your love and support.” ❤

While Dre has rarely spoken on the incident, he did admit to the deplorable act in an episode of Defiant Ones referring to himself as “out of his f***ing mind.”

Thankfully Dee has surpassed her goal of $5,000 dollars. She took to Twitter to thank all those who have donated thus far.
