Join The Club: Daniel Kaluuya Says He’s Tired of Talking About Race: “It’s Just Boring to Me.”

"Queen & Slim" UK Premiere - Red Carpet Arrivals

Queen & Slim star and British actor Daniel Kaluuya may have broken into the industry by utilizing roles in films that creatively addresses the issue of race in America, he doesn’t want to be typecast because of it.

According to The Guardian, in a recent interview with Radio Times, the Get Out actor revealed that he’s over talking about race relations all the time.

“What is there to talk about race?” Kaluuya said. “It’s just boring to me. What’s the debate? I’m more of a doer — I’m just going to do what I want to do.”

While the Black Panther star may be tired of discussing the matters, he notes he’s not oblivious to the plight that he faces daily—he just refuses to be defined by it.

“I’m not going to ignore that I’m surrounded by [racism], but I’m not defined by it,” Kaluuya continued. “I’m just Daniel, who happens to be black.”

While the actor addressed that he gained mainstream success in films that largely took the topic head on, he asserts that his also resume includes a variety of television shows and movies where the characters and narratives weren’t.

The Fades ain’t about race, Psychoville ain’t about race, Skins ain’t about race, Chatroom ain’t about race, Johnny English Reborn ain’t about race,” Kaluuya said. “But that almost gets erased. There’s a narrative that is pushed.”

Although Queen & Slim is being championed as the modern day Black Bonnie and Clyde story, Kaluuya states that it was the underlying love story that drew him to the role more than anything else.

“Yes, it’s got those moments [about race] but that’s more of a catalyst,” he said.

Despite his objections to being typecast, Kaluyya is gearing up to star in a biopic about Fred Hampton, the Chicago-based assassinated leader of the Black Panther party. The film, which is still in development, is set to be directed by Black Panther‘s Ryan Coogler and will also star Kaluuya’s Get Out co-star, Lakeith Stanfield.

At the time the project was announced, Kaluuya made a similar statement noting that it’s a lot of pressure for one Black celebrity to be labeled as the spokesperson for all Black people.

“I’m not a spokesperson, I’m an individual,” Kaluuya told The Guardian at the time. “Who’s the spokesperson for white people? There isn’t one. No one’s expected to speak up for all white people. I’m just living my life. I’m a black man, I’m proud of it, but I’m just living my life.”

90’s babies hold on to your blanket because Barney is retuning to a theatre near you!

According to The Hollywood ReporterGet Out star Daniel Kaluuya and his production company 59% are teaming up with Mattel to bring the 90s megastar to the big screen in a live-action movie titled Barney. Although the project has yet to find a studio home, Mattel and Kaluuya believe that the reemergence of the beloved purple dinosaur will capture the kid in us all.

“Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood,” Kaluuya said. “We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.”

The new direction is just what Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner is hoping for as he co-signed Daniel Kaluuya’s excitement, stating that the new venture will “surprise audiences and subvert expectations.”

“Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations,” Robbie Brenner said. “The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.”

Barney & Friends premiered on PBS in 1992, launching a 17-year run of kid-friendly programming before ceasing production in 2009. The childhood staple and introduced viewers to Barney, an imaginary and perpetually optimistic Tyrannosaurus rex that taught children lessons about friendship through song and dance, while helping them learn scholastically.

Barney will join other Mattel properties that are currently being developed as features, including Hot Wheels, Masters of the Universe and Barbie.

The Black Bonnie & Clyde: ‘Queen & Slim’ Premiering this Fall

Are you ready for a modern-day Black Bonnie and Clyde? Lena Waithe, the Emmy-winning screenwriter, already has everyone on the edge of their seats for Queen & Slim as she explains to Complex.

The film is “Bonnie & Clyde meets Thelma & Louis meets Set It Off. Waithe worked closely with writer James Frey as they adapted an original idea for the story. Universal Pictures will release Queen & Slim a romantic thriller film directed by Melina Matsoukas on November 27.

“I wanted to explore a world where getting pulled over by the police is like playing Russian roulette, and your only weapon against injustice is your ability to never let go of who you are,” Waithe announced at the BET Awards earlier this summer.

It’s a young Black couple’s first date and after leaving dinner they decide to continue their night, but to their surprise blue and red flashing lights race behind them. A police officer pulls them over in the middle of the evening because they failed to use a turning signal. Things quickly escalate despite the minuscule infraction and the officer draws out his weapon onto the couple and aggressively threatens them. In self-defense, Slim hastily grabs the gun and fatally shoots the officer.

“It’s a story of resistance and a story in which we are never victims and most importantly, a story about the strength of Black love,” Melina Matsoukas explains.

The pair immediately goes on the run as they drive across the country, but they can’t fight their feelings for one another and they fall in love in the process. Their journey as fugitives isn’t an easy one as their faces go viral from a clip of the shooting. Queen, played by Jodie Turner-Smith in the starring role, and Slim, played by Black Panther’s Daniel Kaluuya embody the pure essence of Black love and throughout the film will use that power to fight against oppression. Turner-Smith and Kaluuya’s other castmates include Indya Moore from Pose, Chloë Sevigny, and Bokeem Woodbine.

A film this anticipated must have a bomb soundtrack. The film’s scoring was created by Devonté Hynes, a young black R&B artist known as Blood Orange – we are in good hands. We know you heard “Staying Alive” the 1977 Bee Gee’s classic and “Runnin” the 1995 hit by The Pharcyde. Stay tuned for a closer look into the songs that carry us through this enticing journey. Queen & Slim

Get Out‘s Daniel Kaluuya has really been establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s brightest stars ever since breaking out of the sunken place and taking down a terrorist organization in Jordan Peele’s cult classic back in 2017. Now he’s about to make some very loud noise all over as he finds himself having become a folk hero to the Black community in Lena Waithe’s upcoming film Queen & Slim.

Directed by Melina Matsoukas and starring Kaluuya and newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith, Queen & Slim is the story about a first date turned Black community folklore as the couple finds themselves on the run from authorities after an overzealous police officer gets his comeuppance for harassing the twosome. With the community rooting them on and the feds on their ass, the “Black Bonnie and Clyde” have no choice but to ride or die together and in the process fall in love with each other. Can’t wait for this one.

Check out the trailer for Queen & Slim below and let us know if you’ll be checking for this when it drops November 27.
