Drake’s Quarantine-Themed “Tootsie Slide” Video Will Make You Feel A Bit Poor

With the U.S.-Canada border closed off due to the coronavirus and COVID-19 spread, our neighbors to the north are doing their best with our new global reality. In the meantime, Drake unveiled a video “Tootsie Slide” that not only might spark a new dance craze but shows off just how paid the 6 God really is.

The track “Tootsie Slide” is named after Atlanta social media star Tootsie, who is seen dancing with his pals on TikTok to the track as Drake rattles off instructions. While it isn’t quite like instructional dance tracks like the “Cha-Cha Slide” or other BBQ and party favorites,, once you hear the hook and the step-by-step breakdown, it won’t be long before its buried in your head.

The video opens up with a chilling shot of the empty streets of Toronto at night, with all the shuttered businesses and lack of people walking about somewhat mirroring our current landscape in the states. The clip then moves to Drake, decked out with Nike gloves, a face mask, and a very fire camo bomber while bringing viewers into his lavish mansion that has been nicknamed “The Embassy” for good reason.

Drizzy’s take on Tootsie’s dance is simple enough to follow along with and the track itself is typical stunt talk from the OVO honcho that we’ve heard in times past. The clip ends with Drake retreating to his rooftop where he sets off an over-the-top display of fireworks via remote control.

We’ve scoured Twitter for reactions to Drake’s “Tootsie Slide” video, which are posted below.

The Red Bull Dance Your Style competition is all about floor supremacy, and anyone can appreciate the energy in the building. The one-on-one street dance competition recently hit Boston (as well as New Orleans) and the winners will be heading to Las Vegas to see who is no. 1.

And that’s just on stateside as that winner (the finals are September 28 in Las Vegas) will eventually do battle in Paris to be crowned world champion on October 12.

But first in Boston, 16 dancers from a myriad of cities and styles converged at the iconic House of Blues at Fenway Park to battle it out.

There were performers like Princess Lockeroo who was hoping to put the spotlight on the Waackin dance style. “I’m here to rep my style,” she told Hip-Hop Wired. “It originated in the 1970’s in California, it was created by gay Black and Hispanic men, and it was created to Disco music. It was never really a battle style, it was about embattling confidence and accepting every part of yourself.”

She added, “It’s all about embracing and accepting your uniqueness [and] making the music come to life visually.

Then there was Uko Snowbunny who hails from ]Japan but came to NYC to take in Hip-Hop culture firsthand, and stayed. “You don’t see a boombox in Japan,” she told Hip-Hop Wired with a laugh. “Music is super inspiring to me. So if people can see in the music through me, because of I how I move, it’s just great.”

Sade Keinu, another NYC native from Brooklyn who also has worked with Kanye West, made it furthest along during the night’s competition. “I grew up in Brooklyn so that dancing life was definitely a part of me but I did a lot of choreography,” she told HHW. “I’m the happiest when I’m dancing. I can really release what I’m feeling. The difference in battling and freestyling (vs. choreography), there’s no boundaries.”

Ultimately, the night’s winner was Hurrikane, who came through with a technically savvy yet crowd-pleasing style that put him over the top.

“I feel great! The event was amazing. Really, my favorite part is being able to dance with all the contestants because honestly I look up to all of them and it’s unbelievable to be on the same floor as them,” he graciously said via a statement.

Lil Wayne finally let go Tha Carter V to the masses and as we’ve highlighted, it has enjoyed positive reviews despite the length of time it took to drop. One of the early fan favorites, the Swizz Beatz-produced “Uproar” made use of a popular 2001 Hip-Hop hit that has sparked the #UproarChallenge craze.

The “Uproar” track takes elements of G. Dep’s “Special Delivery” which was originally produced by EZ Elpee and largely sounds like the original. Fans of a certain age certainly recognized the similarities and a revival of the Harlem Shake dance was afoot after fans took to social media to show off an updated version of the dance via their accounts.

Weezy himself spoke to the growth of the challenge via his Twitter account, and there are several examples of the dances available across social media.

We’ve collected the best of the #UproarChallenge videos we could find below.
