Bonnie Pointer of The Pointer Sisters Dead at the Age of 69

Bonnie Pointer, a member of the legendary singers the Pointer Sisters, has passed away at the age of 69.

“It is with great sadness that I have to announce to the fans of the Pointer Sisters that my sister Bonnie died this morning,” said Anita Pointer, Variety reports. “Our family is devastated. On behalf of my siblings and I and the entire Pointer family, we ask for your prayers at this time.”

Bonnie was a founding member of the group but would pursue her own solo career in the 1970s. Her final recording was “Feels Like June” a joint effort with Anita, which celebrated her younger sister June who proceeded her in death.

The Pointer Singers began singing at the West Oakland Church of God in Oakland, California over 50 years ago. The group began as a trio in 1969 leading to a tour with Elvin Bishop. The Pointer Sisters signed to Atlantic Records in 1971, performing classic songs from the 1930s and 40s. In 1972 their oldest sister Ruth joined the group and they made a transition to Blue Thumb record label and achieved a top 10 hit in “Yes We Can Can.” Bonnie would win a Grammy in 1974 with Anita for a performance of “Fairytale” before her 1977 departure. Her biggest song as a solo artist was ”Heaven Must Have Set You” from 1979.
