When the beautiful and talented Williams Sisters come to your tournament you can expect a few things are going to happen. 1) Both Serena & Venus gonna stunt on the children with a fly ‘fit. 2) Contenders on the court are going to be nervous because they (in the words of Big Freedia) came to slay! 3) Some bigoted fool will say or do something dumb and racist. We saw that at the US Opens just a week ago. Fast forward this one and we see the tomfoolery is back in full swing.
According to The Washington Posts, The Penguin Football Club from Tasmania ( Australian-rules football in the North West Football League (NWFL) participated in the end of the season prank called “Mad Monday.” Three of the players were photographed in blackface, costumed as tennis champions Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Kenyan-born football player Aliir Aliir.
It didn’t take long before social media caught wind of it. The shameful picture has been shared all over the world via Twitter and Facebook (though the Facebook picture has been taken down).
“It was not their intention to upset anyone and all they meant to do was dress as one of their sporting idols… Their actions were never intended to be racist in any way. Those concerned have been reprimanded and will be given support to make sure they understand that their behaviour (sic) was racist and hurtful and that it will not happen again… The players concerned have acknowledged that what they did was completely and utterly unacceptable and would like to apologise (sic) unreservedly for their lack of judgement.”
Whether to two queens accept this wack apology is no known… what we do know is as stated before: They will continue to stunt on the children, make contenders shake with fear and rise as the bigots come for them.
