New Los Angeles Exhibition Celebrates The Black History of Memes

Los Angeles Instagram exhibit to showcase Black History of Memes.

From the evolution of photos and GIFs, to short videos, the Black meme community has become a pivotal part of pop culture on social media. Over the last decade, the way Black people share memes is an expression of ourselves — of who we are, and how we feel at a certain moment in time.

Afro Surrealist, artist Alim Smith is debuting a collection of meme portraits at a Instagram pop-up exhibit, titled Family Reunion.

“I feel like the emotions that I chose really capture pandemic energy. They capture how the world feels right now to me, at least, or what the world looks like to me right now,” Smith shared.

To honor our evolution and cultural impact, the new exhibit celebrating Black memes is slated to open on February 23 in Los Angeles.

The gallery will pay homage to the hall of famers of Black meme culture including Kayla Nicole Jones, Kalin Elisa, Sweet Brown, Soulja Boy, Viola Davis, and more.

Beyond The Streets Curates Beastie Boys’ ‘Live And Direct’ Book Tour Exhibit

Beyond The Streets Art Collective is curating an exhibit with the Beastie Boys for their forthcoming 600-page memoir entitled The Beastie Boys Book: Live And Direct.

The six-date, four-city book tour, which is scheduled to begin later this month in NYC, will have events featuring readings, Q&A sessions with Mike D, Ad Rock, a guest moderator and a live score from DJ Mix Master Mike. This project is part of an ongoing collabo with Beyond The Streets and adidas skateboarding.

The traveling exhibit will feature memorabilia from the trio’s unforgettable career, giving visitors a deeper look into their four decade legacy as one of Hip Hop’s most groundbreaking acts.

The Beastie Boys Book: Live & Direct Tour kicks off with a pair New York City stops beginning in Manhattan on October 29 at Town Hall and then moving to Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre on October 30. Mike D and Ad-Rock then head out to the West Coast for appearances at Los Angeles’s Montalban Theatre on November 3 and 4 and at San Francisco’s City Arts & Lectures at Nourse Theater on November 5. The brief run will culminate on November 30 in London, England at EartH.
