Rebel fashion brand Sprayground teamed up with astronaut Buzz Aldrin for an out of this world collection created just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first human-crewed moon landing. The lifestyle label’s founder and creator David Ben David has long shown an interest in aerodynamics and aerospace, often integrating the theme into his design aesthetic.
Sprayground is an edgy, forward-thinking company with a pulse on pop culture and an eye on the unknown. Just a few years ago DBD unveiled a collection he created with Aldrin that included bags and accessories. This year the two innovators have come together again to launch a capsule to mark half a century since the Apollo 11 moonwalk, which took place July 20, 1969. Pioneers come in all forms, from space exploration to fashion on the frontline, this pair finds common ground in the evolution of design.
Buzz Aldrin and his mission commander Neil Armstrong are recognized the world over as the first people to land on the moon and as such have reached icon status in space and tech industries respectively and beyond. This event is considered one of the top ten critical moments in space exploration and etched in the minds of millions that witnessed the video footage of the astronauts’ famous declaration of proclaiming, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Shortly after that, outer space, and the new frontier it represented inspired countless futuristic fashion trends.
Ten years ago Louis Vuitton launched a campaign for luggage in coordination with the 40th anniversary. Today, Sprayground combines life on earth dynamics with other world elements to bring the new school take on space-age fashion to life. The design offices are conveniently headquartered in Manhattan, making it easy for Aldrin, a New Jersey native, to drop in for photoshoots with David Ben David to promote the limited edition debut. Earlier this year several of the surviving Apollo astronauts gathered in New York City at the Explorers Club in anticipation of the upcoming fiftieth anniversary which has sparked several associated events planned in alignment with NASA’s formal celebration.
