Houston-based artist S7GMA (SIGMA) is creating buzz with his latest singles, “Now” and “SORRY,” from his upcoming project, “Mind Of Me,” set to drop later this year. Released this past April, “Now” reflects his artistic journey to date, evolving his sound and brand to reflect the most authentic expression of his artistry. The song exudes a newfound confidence in the future. It’s both a personal affirmation for S7GMA and a manifestation for listeners. Meanwhile, “SORRY,” penned over the last two years, reflects his journey through profound loss. The single is a poignant reminder of life’s harsh lessons and a heartfelt apology for the struggles we all face.
“I would describe my music as more alternative hip-hop or conscious hip-hop because it’s really self-aware music,” shared S7GMA. “It’s based on my losses, wins, tragedies, triumphs, and reflections.”
Reflecting on his 12-year journey in music, S7GMA opens up about the struggle to stay true to his artistic vision while crafting sounds that resonate with his audience. In 2023, S7GMA felt like he was only revealing what he thought were the more acceptable parts of his artistry, which didn’t get as much traction as he hoped. Now, as he puts it, he’s “putting all his cards on the table, now is forever and forever is now.”
“I realized you can give people what they want, and they’ll want something different,” continued S7GMA. “I locked myself in my room for three months and mapped out exactly how I wanted everything to sound. I decided this year it’s about what I want to make and hear; it’s my story, my narrative.”
Over the last few years, S7GMA has faced a whirlwind of loss and tragedy—his best friend and manager was killed, his father passed away, and his son’s newborn also tragically died, all within three months. Spiraling into a deep depression, S7GMA channeled his pain into his music, giving birth to “SORRY,” a product of that grieving process. The track offers a more subdued and reflective sound than his other works.
“I put the songs together from beats I had from 2022 and 2023. It was about two years since I first heard these beats, but I had more skills and education. So, it felt good to be able to get these two out the way I wanted,” said S7GMA.
Released during Men’s Mental Health Month, the music video for “SORRY” is now available on YouTube. S7GMA has more visuals in the pipeline for his upcoming album, including for the track “Now.” Although there isn’t an exact release date for “Mind Of Me,” S7GMA is aiming for a fall drop—Scorpio season. He describes the album as a personal eulogy and a reintroduction to “the new S7GMA, the now S7GMA, and the mind of S7GMA.”
Known for his thoughtful approach, S7GMA has meticulously planned every aspect of this project, including the release of seven singles, a number symbolizing protection, intuition, wisdom, completion, and perfection. He’s also deeply involved in the album’s artwork, teasing a color scheme featuring green for growth, yellow for first bloom, and vibrant jewel tones like sweet pepper for something new. Musically, S7GMA has intentionally incorporated organic elements, including piano, synth, and a choir, to enrich the album’s sound.
Originally from North Philly, S7GMA relocated to Texas during junior high and began dipping his toes into music around the age of 14 or 15, initially making parody tracks with friends. It wasn’t until his friend and longtime collaborator XIQT (EXECUTE) crafted his first structured song that S7GMA realized he could do the same with just a bit of equipment and software. Determined to get started, S7GMA persuaded his mom to let him use her credit card for what he claimed was a $10 mic, but ended up spending $100 on the gear he needed. The gamble paid off, and by 15 or 16, he was fully immersed in music, drawing inspiration from underground artists like Logic and Tech N9ne.
Over the past six years, S7GMA has honed his recording, mixing, mastering, and engineering skills, delivering a range of hits, each with a distinct flavor. Tracks like “Crazy for You” showcase his ability to craft a love-infused pop song, while “Valedictorian” leans into a classic pop sound. “Evolve” and “Stick n Stones” embody his dark alternative hip-hop signature style. While S7GMA handles most of his production, he also collaborates with Barron Studios in Houston.
“No disrespect, but it feels like people aren’t paying attention to music anymore – the words, the production, the story,” said S7GMA. “That’s why this year, I focused on studying music theory, music engineering, and [psychoacoustics], the psychology of sound, to portray my music the way I want to and to pull people into the story more.”
With a renewed commitment to his craft, S7GMA has plenty more lined up this year. His latest single, “SORRY,” drops on July 6th across all streaming platforms, followed by “Welcome,” one of the final singles from his upcoming album, slated for release in the second week of August. S7GMA recently took the stage on June 28th, opening for Famous Dex at the BFE Rock Club in Houston. For those who missed it, stay connected through social media for updates on his upcoming shows.
