R. Kelly had a scary encounter with an inmate behind bars.
Last month, it was reported that the embattled singer was attacked by a fellow inmate inside Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center, where he is awaiting trial on federal sexual abuse charges.
Now more details from the confrontation have emerged. According to court records, obtained by Page Six, the “violent” inmate tried to stab Kelly with a pen. Kelly was sleeping in his cell when the inmate crept in and started “stomping on [Kelly’s] head, repeatedly,” according to Kelly’s attorney Steven Greenberg.
Greenberg, who filed a motion asking the court to release Kelly on bail, alleged the inmate also had “an ink pen with him that he was going to use to stab Mr. Kelly” but he was thwarted by others before he could use it. A doctor reportedly examined the 53-year-old singer and determined that he didn’t have any serious injuries.
“This is an inmate that never should have been anywhere near Mr. Kelly, an individual who is charged with the most violent of crimes, and one who plainly has no respect for the rules, he has the phrase ‘Fu** The Feds’ tattooed on his face,” Greenberg said.
Kelly “mostly remains in his cell… to ensure his own safety” but was placed in solitary confinement following the attack for his protection. The inmate who attacked him was allegedly upset over recent lockdowns caused by pro-Kelly protests outside of the jail.
Kelly’s legal team continues to petition the courts to release him on bail as he awaits trial, but all of those requests have been denied. Following the attack, Greenberg proposed that the singer live in an apartment with his girlfriend close to the courthouse with electronic monitoring.
Kelly, who is awaiting trial on a series of child sex abuse charges, is scheduled to be tried first in New York, with jury selection tentatively slated to begin Sept. 29.
